Q&A   p. 17

Q. I own a motorhome which has an EPDM roof and is 12 years old. I would like to repaint it but the problem is getting something to stick to the surface. A forum I read recently mentioned that your company had a primer and topcoat that would be suitable. Could I get some information about this product?

A. Use Resene Membrane Roofing Primer and then two coats of any Resene exterior acrylic paint. Scrub down first with Resene Paint Prep and Housewash following label directions before applying the primer and paint.

May 2016

Q. I have a 'spackled' floor surface on my painted garage floor, much like the walking surface around an in-ground pool. I need to repaint. What do you recommend?

A. It is difficult to make any recommendation without an adhesion trial first. Suggest you try a test patch of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer. If this is successful then you can use Resene Walk-on as the topcoat.

May 2016

Q. I have 2 x 10L pails and a 4L pail of Resene Sonyx 101 (three different shades of Resene Joss) which was mixed in 2009. I have not opened the pails to check them but would the paint still be usable or should I recycle and buy new pails? I have a small area to paint and there may be enough in a pail to do the task.

A. Provided the containers have been well sealed, there should be no problem with the paint.

May 2016

Q. I want to paint over some treated pine lining boards in three bedrooms of my home. I am looking to do these white. What do I need to do to prepare or can I just prime and paint over?

A. Clean and/or wash down, prime with Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer and two coats of your selected topcoat (Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen or Resene Lustacryl semi-gloss etc) as required.

May 2016

Q. I have a stucco house built in the 40s. I have begun waterblasting to remove old paint and intend to fix/seal cracks etc. The paint comes off easily to expose the bare stucco surface. However in places where cracks have been previously fixed there are bituminous black patches which do not come away easily. I intend to use Resene Sureseal on the bare stucco and roofing primer over the bituminous patches. Is this recommended practice? Should Resene Sureseal go on first up to the bituminous patches (but not over) and then roofing primer over the bituminous patch and overlapping the Resene Sureseal? I intend to use Resene X-200 as the topcoat. The previous paint was lifting where it had been applied over the bituminous patches so I do not want that to happen again!

A. Spot prime any bituminous areas with Resene Membrane Roofing Primer. The product does have a characteristic odour, so don't be alarmed.

You cannot over coat the Resene Membrane Roofing Primer with a solventborne paint, so paint up to the Resene Membrane Roofing Primer edge with the Resene Sureseal but avoid overlapping onto the Resene Membrane Roofing Primer. Tricky but can be accomplished. If Resene Sureseal is applied to the bitumen then there will be bitumen bleed into the Resene Sureseal.

May 2016

Q. Please advise surface preparation and requirements for recoating of Resene Uracryl.

A. One of the many advantages of the Resene Uracryl coating systems compared to conventional systems is that the topcoats are recoatable with themselves into future maintenance timetables provided that the surface is sound and any pigment oxidation and other surface contaminants are removed, usually by using Resene Paint Prep and Housewash or similar precleaners, then simply overcoating with your selected Resene Uracryl.

May 2016

Q. I've been refinishing the frame of our pergola and used some exterior filler to fill surface cracks. The filler has been sanded with 60 grit and then undercoated before applying a topcoat. After two coats the finish is patchy where the filler has been used. Any suggestions please?

A. You could overcoat with a low sheen paint such as Resene Lumbersider to reduce the gloss refraction levels of the surface. Alternately sand the filler smooth with 180 grit sandpaper, spot prime with Resene Quick Dry primer and recoat with your topcoat.

May 2016

Q. I have been asked to paint game layouts on concrete at a school. Can we get paving paint in small bright colours , or can any paint be used?

A. The most successful coating for this is Resene Lumbersider, which is self-priming, available in our Total Colour System and easily applied, dry in 2 hours, wash up with water and if only a tiny detail, use a Resene testpot.

May 2016

Q. I need to paint a concrete floor. It is undercover but some water will run over it. 200 children will walk it once a day.

A. You will need to prepare the floor to a toothed surface profile, prime with Resene ConcreteSeal 3 in 1 followed by Resene Walk-on acrylic coating. This is a tough light duty system ideal for foot traffic.

May 2016

Q. When we had our house built we chose to have painted floors. Unfortunately in the kitchen our contractor put on a white primer under a green paint topcoat. The white paint is now showing through here and there. We want to repaint the floor but need to get rid of or seal the white primer (we want the same green topcoat). Any ideas on how to remove or seal the white primer? We need to do this ourselves to save money.

A. The practical method would be to machine sand the wooden floor and repaint, but you state that cost is a factor, so carefully clean, sand any loose material and spot prime any bare timber, and apply two coats of your green paint.

May 2016

Q. I have some Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer. Can I use this to prime wardrobe doors that are currently painted with a smooth acrylic gloss, instead of mechanical keying? I don't relish the idea of sanding all those louvres individually.

A. The answer is yes, only because you have the material to hand and don't relish the prospect of tedious sanding.

May 2016

Q. I'm repainting my cedar windows which are about 40 years old. The old paint is in very poor condition so I'm stripping back to wood. Resene sold me Resene Wood Primer, solventborne, and Resene Lustacryl semi-gloss, white. However the vertical supports and sills are to be Resene Pharlap. Is this colour available as a Resene CoolColour™? The windows face north west and sun damage is a big problem. I see online people suggest undercoating with aluminium paint when heat is an issue. Can you share your thoughts please?

A. The colour Resene Pharlap has a LRV factor of 23, and will attract some heat build-up. The timber industry is generally stating desirable levels above 40 LRV to reduce timber stresses. Aluminium primers will make little difference to the paint system performance, but an additional topcoat of Resene Lustacryl will provide better results.

May 2016

Q. I am painting two small bathroom ceilings which are currently glossed and showing water stains. What is the best way to prepare them and what is the recommended paint to use? Gloss/Semi?

A. Wash down using sugar soap then sand to de gloss. Apply a coat of Resene StainLock and finish with two coats of Resene SpaceCote Flat.

May 2016

Q. What is the best way to prep old varnished interior doors and door frames prior to painting?

A. Degrease using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner, taking particular care around handles where hand contact occurs. Apply an adhesion coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer and leave to cure for 48 hours then apply two coats of Resene Lustacryl. Adhesion will take at least 7 days to develop and the paint will continue to harden for an additional 3 weeks.

May 2016

Q. I've just laid a new Besser block retaining wall and 3m high garage wall. I want to paint the retaining wall clear and garage wall. Waterproofing is an issue so I'm thinking of Resene X-200. How long should I wait until painting after blocks laid?

A. Best to wait about a month.

May 2016

Q. We are after a clear gloss finish for mild steel for internal use. Specifically we have a number of mild steel connectors on an exposed timber truss which we need to protect. We are after something that is pretty scratch resistant and probably two pack.

A. We usually say no to a clear for internal steel as under film corrosion can still occur. However if the steel is clean and degreased you could look to use 4 coats of Resene Uracryl 403 Gloss Clear.

May 2016

Q. Can Aquapoxy be colour tinted and is it low sheen or gloss?

A. Resene Aquapoxy is only available in a gloss and semi-gloss finish and both can be tinted to a series of colours tinted off the white base.

May 2016

Q. We have a newly built server at church that is built out of natural plywood. I intend varnishing the bare wood. What varnish should I use bearing in mind the top will be used to make coffees and teas etc so may get wet frequently?

A. Best product would be Resene Polythane.

May 2016

Q. What is the best paint to use to paint over the brick surrounding the hearth? Which paint would be safe to use against the heat of the fireplace? The bricks are always cool to touch when the fire is full on.

A. If the bricks are glazed apply a coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer (note the product is not designed to achieve a high wet film build or opacity) and leave to cure for 48 hours then apply two coats of Resene Lustacryl.

May 2016

Q. When repainting weathered oil based paint is priming the entire surface with the same base recommended? Can I get away with a gloss remover and spot prime?

A. If the existing paint is sound, chalk free and sanded then you can apply two coats of a Resene exterior acrylic topcoat paint.

May 2016

Q. I am considering a glass splashback with paint on the back. What benefits are there vs tiles or something else and what is the cost?

A. Resene supplies paint for splashbacks but then the splashback supplier will apply it and quote accordingly so you are best to get a quote direct from your splashback supplier.

A glass splashback backpainted with paint gives you a huge range of colour possibilities that can be chosen to work with the rest of your colour scheme. As the paint is on the back the colour is well protected and the surface is easy to keep clean – no cracks, valleys or grouting that kitchen grease can get stuck in. And can be made custom sized to suit whatever size you need.

It always pays to check the glass being used as one glass type (low iron oxide clear glass) shows the colour true to colour and standard glass doesn't (standard glass tends to have a greenish tinge to it).

Make sure your splashback supplier is using the correct paint brand and colour otherwise you might be disappointed in the colour.

If you want to change the colour in the future you would need to remove the splashback and replace it with another one.

May 2016

Q. We have a job coming up where the client has asked for north facing Titan panels to be painted black. We would ordinarily apply Resene Concrete Primer and two coats of Resene Lumbersider CoolColour. However I wonder if an alternative white primer would be more suitable and would enhance the CoolColour performance?

A. Resene Concrete Primer is now formulated to be a Resene CoolColour™ primer.

May 2016

Q. I wanted to start using Signbond ACM panel as a support for oil paintings. The plan was to apply a grip coat to the polyester side of the panel and prime over that with acrylic primer. My question is, do you have a recommended adhesion primer to use on Signbond's polyester side? I was thinking maybe Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer as it says it's for use on Melamine and baked enamel. I thought baked enamel might include polyester, and melamine I read is similar to polyester, but I'm not technically-minded so I thought it was safer to make sure.

A. I would say that Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer was the most appropriate adhesion primer to use but suggest that you check adhesion before undertaking a large painting project.

May 2016

Q. We have just bought an old red brick house and were advised by the builder inspector that the old bricks need to be 'sealed' to make them more weathertight. What product would you recommend for this? I searched your Q&A's, one answer to a similar question was that Resene Aquapel would not be the right product as it is only a water repellent and wouldn't provide a weathertight seal. So what would the right product be?

A. Assuming the bricks are not glazed I would still apply a saturation coat of Resene Solventborne Aquapel, then apply a coat of Resene Sureseal and three coats of Resene X-200 to give the best outcome re weathertightness. You will need to check the pointing (plaster that holds the bricks in place) to ensure that it is sound. Also any flashings must be checked to ensure that they are functioning as intended.

May 2016

Q. Our landlord thinks that using magnetic paint will somehow damage the wall colour and finish. Is this possible? We need to hang paintings. Can't the wall section be repainted to match the other walls in the room?

A. If the magnetic layer is rolled this can give a textured finish which when topcoated will remain.

Resene Magnetic Magic was developed mainly for attachment of paper sheets using fridge type magnets. It may not be strong enough for hanging paintings.

May 2016

Q. I'm after some advice about painting systems that can be applied to precast concrete panels, which have insufficient cover, to help reduce the rate of corrosion. The client is looking for an economic solution for a retail warehouse building.

A. A high build application of Resene X-400 to achieve a minimum dry film thickness of 300 microns will be a possible solution. However it does depend upon the concrete cover that is in place and may well be insufficient to achieve long term protection.

May 2016

Q. We have recently updated our kitchen and need to do something with our hideous lino flooring (preferably cheap). We were wondering if you had any recommendations around painting lino?

A. The lino type can affect the outcome, but the best system we have would be Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer and Resene Walk-on or Resene Lustacryl. Leave the Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer to cure for 48 hours then overcoat.

May 2016

Q. I would like to paint existing interior floorboards in a residential home using the colour Resene Black. The finish I would prefer for the floorboards is a high gloss. My painter will conduct this work but I am seeking input on which approach would be best to achieve the black gloss looking I want, while being mindful of durability. Would I be best to consider Resene Walk-on or use a standard Resene acrylic like Resene Lumbersider and then apply a clear high gloss coat over it like Resene Polythane or Resene Poly-Gloss? This is a home occupied by a family of 2 x adults, 2 x children and a pet dog so we are seeking a balance of a stunning visual finish with practical durability.

A. It is very difficult to get a paint finish that will remain unaffected by dog claw scratches. Also once Resene Walk-on is clear coated any slip resistance will be negated. High gloss paint finishes will always result in reduced wet slip resistance. A possible interior system would be to apply Resene Lumbersider Black to the prepared and primed floor (leave for 48 hours to cure then mop down with warm water and leave to dry before clear coating) then apply two coats of Resene Uracryl GraffitiShield Gloss.

May 2016

Q. Does Resene have a sealant to paint over sticky painted vinyl wallpaper? The paper was painted over by the previous owner 12 years ago. I wish to repaint it. Is this possible?

A. We recommend Resene Vinyl Wallpaper Sealer.

May 2016

Q. I'm making interior products using concrete (specifically glass fibre reinforced concrete and ultra high performance concrete). I'd like to paint some of these products to give more diversity with regard to the colours I can use. Can you suggest the most appropriate primer and paint types that would cope with both the alkalinity and porous nature of concrete? I'd also like to avoid using anything that goes on too thick, as some of my products have detail and texture that I'd like to keep if possible.

A. For adhesion priming of GRC we only recommend Resene ConcreteSeal 3 in1. This primer can be overcoated with almost all Resene tinted paints with the exception of Resene solventborne enamels.

May 2016

Q. I mistakenly painted a deck that I didn't know was originally stained and now the paint is coming off and ends up in the house. What can I do?

A. We recommend stripping with paint stripper or if the decking timber is smooth then sanding can be undertaken. If not then careful LOW pressure waterblasting can be undertaken but avoid using any waterblasting unit with a rotating head attachment and avoid close encounters with the decking timber. Waterblasting can damage the timber surface which will impact on paint performance.

May 2016

Q. Do the door, skirting board and window sills have to be semi-gloss paint?

A. In principle no but application of a semi-gloss finish has been a long standing convention for these areas.

May 2016

Q. I live in Christchurch. Is it still OK to paint corrugated iron roof with Resene Summit roof paint in early autumn?

A. You can apply roof paint at any time of the year as long as the painting conditions are met.

May 2016

Q. We have a cedar board and batten house that was built 24 years ago. We were told it was best to leave it to weather. However we have since found out it should have been stained or painted. Would it be best to paint or stain? What treatments would it need first?

A. Leaving Cedar cladding to weather was common at the time the cladding was installed. This was based on the development of an aged silver look to weathered cedar that was fashionable in Europe. However, in NZ uncoated cedar will silver but along with a black mould growth on the less weathered elevations (eastern and southern). The decision on stain vs paint really comes down to condition of the cladding. We would need more details on condition, degree of splitting, cupping, and the extent of mould/algal growth.

May 2016

Q. I have a zinc steel Yardsaver shed that I am putting up. I want to prime it and then paint it. When I went to the Resene store they suggested Resene Galvo One. However, I think I should have bought Resene Galvo-Prime as I don't think I can use waterborne paints over the top of Resene Galvo One. The shed specifications say zinc steel not zincalume. I was planning to use a Resene roof paint like Resene Hi-Glo.

A. Resene Galvo One is our recommended primer for galvanised steel that has been exposed to weathering for longer than six months. It can be overcoated with any Resene exterior waterborne topcoat paint.

May 2016

Q. I'd like to paint a new fence (rough sawn treated pine) with Resene Lumbersider, but I'm afraid that the paint will seal the timber and moisture will be trapped inside, making it rot faster. I heard that if I stain instead of painting, stain doesn't trap moisture and therefore the fence will last longer. Also I was advised by several people that with new rough sawn fences, once it is built, it is better to let it dry at least a few months before painting. Is that correct, assuming that I'm going to paint with Resene Lumbersider?

A. Thin film waterborne paints like Resene Lumbersider are breathable; the paint film will allow moisture vapour to pass through the film (not liquid water). Given this, painting a timber fence with the product will not 'trap' water or contribute to timber decay.

May 2016

Q. I have had an offer accepted on a house, but on two separate occasions it has smelled very strongly of curry. I have a feeling this might be a permanent problem. Am I right in thinking there is a sealant that could be applied to the walls and ceilings before repainting that would 'seal in' the odour? I realise I'll need to steam-clean the carpets and curtains etc. too.

A. I am not aware of any paint that can be applied that will prevent odour from being detected. Walls and ceilings can be washed down using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner. I would also suggest that curtains and the like are dry cleaned or washed and carpets steam cleaned as an additional step to removing odours.

May 2016

Q. Can you recommend a rust treatment for rusted flashings, nails etc. I have been using a rust killer, but after following the directions to the tee the rust has started leaching through our new paint again!

A. 'Rust kill' products are often not as effective as claimed. We recommend Resene GP Metal Primer for priming areas of corrosion. Wash the areas to be painted with Resene Roof and Metal Wash diluted and used to label instructions then remove as much rust as possible by wet sanding (wet and dry sand paper) or using a 3M Rust and Paint Removal Disc. Then apply the primer, a second coat for heavy corrosion. Rust cannot be stopped but hopefully the corrosion rate can be slowed down.

May 2016

Q. What is the Resene colour match for COLORSTEEL® Windsor Grey?

A. We have Resene matches to all COLORSTEEL® colours and these are available at Resene ColorShops.

May 2016

Q. I painted the ceiling of my bathroom (water based mould resistant paint), and the next morning my partner had a 10 min shower (exhaust fan on and window open). The next day I did a second coat and he had another 10 min shower with fan on and window open. I see on some parts of the ceiling near the shower and exhaust fan vent that there are 'damp' patches that are dry to touch. How does having a shower within 24 hours ruin paint like that? Does the moisture soak into the paint? On the tin it advises to wait 48 hours.

A. Waterborne paints do require time to achieve full film properties. Waterborne paints based on conventional waterborne resins are usually recommended for painting areas where there is steam or humidity such as bathrooms. There are a series of drying stages with a waterborne paint, touch dry occurs early in the curing cycle but final film properties can take a minimum of 7 days or longer to develop. The appearance of damp patches on the ceiling is probably an indication that the fan did not remove steam and there has been condensation occurring. You have not said what paint was used but the time between painting and use of the room is well short of what we would recommend for a waterborne paint for these areas.

May 2016

Q. I repainted a putter head. It has been overcoated, with some runs. What might I do to fix up the overcoat and blemishes?

A. Sorry but sanding (wet and dry) is the only way to address this.

May 2016

Q. What is the darkest tint recommended for cedar weatherboards?

A. There is no set 'darkest tint recommended for cedar weatherboards'; the darker the paint/stain colour the more risk of weatherboard cupping and warping. Resene CoolColour™ technology can reduce but not eliminate the risk of cupping or warping.

May 2016

Q. I've put half a cup of undercoat water based paint in my ceiling paint, which is also waterbased. Has it ruined my ceiling paint?

A. Without knowing what both paints are I cannot be sure but it will depend upon how much paint was in the ceiling paint can/pail. If both are waterborne and only a small amount of the waterborne undercoat was added there may well be little to be concerned about.

June 2016

Q. I have stripped back painted interior cedar window frames. What primer/undercoat do I use and then what type of topcoat paint?

A. If the windows are in an area where there is condensation then prime with Resene Wood Primer. Apply an undercoat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat then finish with two coats of Resene Lusta-Glo (solventborne semi-gloss) or Resene Lustacryl (waterborne semi-gloss).

June 2016

Q. Can I stain over interior doors that have been gloss painted?

A. You would need to totally remove the paint or varnish system first.

June 2016

Q. What kind of paint do you recommend for painting wellies? (gumboots, rainboots etc.) I need them a bright yellow, but after a month of searching I can't find any already in that colour, so I have to make do and paint my own.

A. The only possible system would be to apply a coat of Resene Membrane Roofing Primer and finish with two coats of Resene Lumbersider. However we do not sell small sizes of the primer coat. We cannot give any undertaking as to how long this paint system will last in this situation.

June 2016

Q. I was wondering about doing some kind of bleached paint effect on a Magroc floor. What paint would you recommend? Would this give a durable finish?

A. My experience with painting Magroc would say that achieving a bleached look would be difficult. We have found that good adhesion to this substrate can only be achieved using Resene Stone Strengthener as the primer/sealer then you can apply any Resene waterborne paint system over the primed surface. You could then use Resene Colorwood Whitewash as the topcoat but I strongly advise doing a test area first to verify that this will give you the effect you are after.

June 2016

Q. We're building a new house with dressed pine cladding which we want to leave unpainted to develop a grey weathered look. On the north face some areas of weatherboard will be shaded by verandas in summer, so to avoid a patchy effect we're interested in CoolColourResene Waterborne Woodsman oil stain in Resene Riverstone for a temporary overall grey colour while we wait for the sun to do it naturally. We don't want to be restaining every few years. Will there be any adverse effects using this product?

A. Our climate conditions will always see mould growth appear on uncoated timber. This can be controlled by a biannual application of Resene Deep Clean but this will only be effective on areas that receive regular rain washing. Application of the Resene Woodsman stain will give an effect similar to natural weathering but if the stained areas are not subject to direct weathering then the stained effect will remain essentially unchanged and this may result in a visual difference between the stained and weathered sections.

June 2016

Q. Does Resene have a paint that is non-toxic to goldfish that we can use for the interior of an outdoor fish pond (approx. 3/4 under water, 1/4 above water line)? Concrete and plastered.

A. Resene Swimming Pool Paint can be used as long as the plaster is sound and forms a water tight layer. Allow the paint to cure for at least two weeks then rinse the painted surface and discard water washings at least five times. Fill and add one fish back and wait for 48 hours to check for any signs of fish distress.

June 2016

Q. 1st June in the Waikato... is it too cold to be painting house exterior on a sunny day?

A. Difficult question to give a yes/no answer to as it depends upon the elevation and conditions during application and drying. Resene does have a series of wintergrade paints that can be used when conditions tend towards colder temperatures and higher humidities which occurs over the winter months.

June 2016

Q. I am going to paint my outdoor concrete patio with Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path in Resene Landscape Grey. The catalogue shows I can have the CoolColour option. Would the CoolColour non-skid or the regular non-skid be the best option for my 25 square metre outdoor patio - in Christchurch, north facing, surrounded on three sides by my house?

A. You could use either for this but the Resene CoolColour™ version will reflect more heat than the non-cool version. Please note that CoolColours are not cool to touch.

June 2016

Q. I have painted a bathroom in quick drying waterborne enamel semi-gloss but have ended up with brush marks in patches that look shiny and the rest of the walls look flat. A painter told me that I would need to sand walls and put the next coat on with a roller. He said brush marks may not come out even with light sanding. He said not to use a sander but to do it by hand. Is there any way I can get brush marks out so they don't show through the paint?

A. Due to the rapid surface drying of waterborne enamels brush marking does occur with brush application. Addition of Resene Hot Weather Additive can reduce but not eliminate this; for broad wall areas rolling is our recommended application method. The degree of sanding required depends upon the brush marking texture. Ideally sanding to a smooth finish is the only way to be 100% sure that there will be no see through of the brush marking when additional paint is applied by roller. The painter's suggestion to hand sand does allow for selective sanding as power sanding may well remove more paint than is necessary.

June 2016

Q. I'm in the process of stripping the paint off my weatherboards. The previous person has used a blowtorch or heat gun and burnt the timber like burnt toast. What is the best method to prep the weatherboards before painting?

A. Power sand to remove as much of the charred surface as is practical. There may well be a residual stain but this should not impact upon future paint adhesion. However any residual colouration will impact upon a light coloured stain if you are looking to stain rather than apply a fully pigmented paint system.

June 2016

Q. Can I still paint outside now that the weather has got colder? Also what about painting indoors?

A. For exterior painting over winter you have to be careful to apply waterborne paint and have sufficient time for curing to reach a drying stage that the paint film will not be affected by condensation or rainfall. There is no simple answer to when you can or can't paint outside as the drying of paint is a function of temperature, humidity and air flow. However if the air/surface temperatures are below 10° Celsius and the relative humidity is above 85% then painting is not recommended as this will result in a compromised dry paint film. As a rule of thumb if a thin film of water brushed onto the surface does not dry out completely within 15 minutes then painting should not be undertaken. Resene does have a range of exterior wintergrade paints which can allow painting at lower air/surface temperatures but there are restrictions on topcoat colours (fewer colours available) when using the wintergrade version of the topcoat paint. While the same application restrictions on environmental conditions also apply to interior painting, heaters (not unflued gas or diesel) and dehumidifiers can be used to allow waterborne paint to be applied indoors during cold winter conditions.

June 2016

Q. We have just put in an oak front door step. What is the best product to protect it while keeping the natural oak colour? We need something that will provide really good protection. It is currently stained, however the wood developed black spots within a day. I presume this is because we are close to the west coast and we have a lot of ironsand around our place and the wood has reacted with the metal in the sand.

A. The black spots are referred to are probably sap staining and may leave a permanent stain even if treated with a bleach solution such as diluted Resene Moss & Mould Killer. We do not recommend any water white clear system for any type of exterior timber. We recommend treating the stains with Resene Moss & Mould Killer diluted and used to label instructions then apply two coats of a Resene Woodsman Wood Oil colour. You could choose a colour close to the timber colour.

June 2016

Q. Our fence is painted with white waterbased paint. After a time the nails in the fence get rusty and the rust colour flows down onto the white paint on the fence. Is there a solution to stop this from happening?

A. The only way is to expose the nail heads and spot prime with an anti-corrosive primer such as Resene GP Metal Primer. The success in stopping rust staining is dependent upon how clean the nail heads can be prepared before priming.

June 2016

Q. Can I stain/colour house bricks with a mix of mineral turps and oxide?

A. Sorry but no you need a resin binder to hold the pigment as a film. You could use Resene Concrete Stain.

June 2016

Q. I want to paint my fireplace surround which is either varnished or glazed stamped brick. What do I need to use to ensure the paint adheres to the varnish or glaze?

A. Based on the assumption that the coated areas are sound and you can maintain hand contact on these when the fire is at full heat, apply a thin adhesion coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer and leave to cure for 48 hours before overcoating with two coats of a Resene waterborne enamel topcoat such as Resene Lustacryl.

June 2016

Q. I joined in a paint activity. Unfortunately, paint got on my new Nike top (purchased on Friday) and although I washed it as soon as I got home, it hasn't come out. Can you please advise how I can get the paint out?

A. Try soaking the area in meths and gently massage the meths into the area. Then wash up in warm soapy water.

June 2016

Q. Is there any difference in the surface produced by using a waterbased enamel paint with low sheen and a semi-gloss waterborne enamel?

A. Waterborne enamels can be produced in a range of gloss levels, semi-gloss refers to one of these. The term waterborne and water based are used interchangeably.

June 2016

Q. Can the glow in dark paint be used outside? How long do lights have to be on for it to work and vice versa how long does it stay working?

A. When used outside the base paint must be clear coated with Resene Clearcoat UVS. Glow time is mainly determined by film thickness, multiple coats are required to achieve glow times that extend to a couple of hours. However as the dry film thickness of the paint is increased there is an increasing development of opacity. Ensure you apply the glow paint over a white basecoat.

Q. Our master bedroom has painted lining paper on the walls. It looks like it has previously been stripped of wallpaper that has taken bits of wallboard paper off which shows through the painted lining paper. I have purchased Resene Broadwall Surface Prep and Seal. Do I need to strip all lining paper off? There are places where it has lifted around windows but the centre parts are sound. Or can I get a good finish by pulling the paper off around edges and sanding to smooth finish and then apply the Resene Broadwall Surface Prep and Seal before doing the rest of the painting?

A. Application of Resene Broadwall Surface Prep and Seal will not guarantee a seamless finish to areas where the lining paper has been removed. My recommendation would to strip the lining paper and then follow the directions for applying Resene Broadwall Surface Prep and Seal.

Q. We have a Cedar home which has been previously coated with a wood stain. However, I am not sure exactly which was used as we have left over tins of both oil based and water based wood stains. Which Resene products can we use for re-staining and what is the best way to prep the surface? Areas which have had the most sun exposure appear very weathered but areas in the shade are still in very good condition.

A. Scrub down using Resene Timber and Deck Wash diluted and used to label directions then apply two coats of Resene Waterborne Woodsman. It will be difficult to achieve a uniform colour on all elevations as the colour after application of the Woodsman stain will be influenced by the existing residual colour.

Q. I have been asked by a client to paint stainless rain heads in the middle of a painted exterior concrete wall to blend them in. I was thinking Resene Vinyl Etch and then the topcoat the same as the wall. Is this correct?

A. Etch primers have been used as an adhesion primer for stainless steel. They achieve adhesion as long as the stainless steel is not glossy and a thin coat is applied. If you use Resene Vinyl Etch, thin the product 15% with the recommended thinner (note the unthinned product is low viscosity as supplied). Apply a coat of Resene Galvo Prime over the etch primer then finish with two coats of our exterior waterborne paints.

Q. I have been advised to use a white undercoat or primer under the Resene CoolColour paint. I wanted to know if this is required. I plan to paint my house black. It is located in an alpine area which receives extremes of temperature i.e. -5°C to 40°C. It is clad with what appears to be masonite approx. 10mm thick.

A. Application of two coats of a Resene CoolColour™ at the correct spreading rate will give the CoolColour benefit of increased reflectance of solar radiation compared to the same colour made using non-cool pigments. However applying the cool colour paint over a white basecoat will maximise the CoolColour effect, and should always be used when the top colour is very dark as it would be in your case. When we measure TSR (total solar reflectance) the two topcoats are always applied over a white basecoat. In the case of Resene Black the TSR of the non-cool colour is 4.5% and for the CoolColour version 25.2%. CoolColours will not render a painted surface cool to touch but will reflect more heat (measured by the TSR value) than the non-cool version of the colour.

Q. Is Resene Zylone suitable for a bathroom ceiling?

A. We don't recommend Resene Zylone Sheen in a bathroom as it is a standard acrylic. For a bathroom you could use Resene SpaceCote Flat for a ceiling, which is a waterborne enamel, or Resene Ceiling Velvet for a solventborne option.

June 2016

Q. I used a lime green colour on a wall but it is not working. Please suggest which colours can overlap the lime green colour easily?

A. If you are changing to a pale colour then apply a white basecoat such as Resene Quick Dry Primer Undercoat.

June 2016

Q. I am painting cedar weatherboards. I have washed and scrubbed the boards with Resene Timber and Deck Wash, then applied two coats of Resene TimberLock. I was advised to apply general purpose enamel undercoat, but your website says to use Resene Wood Primer before applying Resene Lumbersider. Was the advice wrong?

A. Our advice is to apply Resene Wood Primer over the Resene TimberLock. Before overcoating ensure the Resene TimberLock is fully dry.

June 2016

Q. I'm painting a bathroom. What primer, paint etc do I need to use? It is new Aqualine GIB®.

A. Apply a seal coat of Resene Sureseal, a coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat then finish with two coats of a Resene Kitchen & Bathroom waterborne topcoat. If you go the waterborne enamel way make sure you leave the new paint system to cure for at least 48 hours after applying the last coat and preferably with heating and a dehumidifier before using the bathroom. The drying time will reduce the possibility of moisture affecting the new paint film.

June 2016

Q. What paint do I use on windows in the bathroom? Note that the windows are already painted and so I'm just sanding back and doing some topcoats.

A. Suggest that after sanding back you apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat then you can topcoat with two coats of a Resene solvent or waterborne enamel.

June 2016

Q. I am looking for an impasto type product with which to coat the side edge of a concrete path. The path will have stone tiles on top but I need to tidy up the sides. Plastering would be ideal but there is a recess formed into the sides that will house rope lighting. Basically plastering will be too heavy and difficult to apply. Waterproofing properties are not important.

A. Resene X-400 would be the closest product we have to an impasto type of paint.

June 2016

Q. We have had our house tested for lead paint and it has come back positive. If we are getting in professional painters will they charge more for the prep of the paint work before painting our house exterior?

A. My understanding is definitely yes.

June 2016

Q. We are having old wrought iron chairs dry ice and vapour blasted clean (to bare metal). Could you please advise on correct primer to use and topcoat?

A. Apply 3 coats of Resene Armourcote 221 epoxy primer and finish with two coats of a Resene Uracryl 400 Series tinted topcoat.

June 2016

Q. I have painted a wall with two coats of Resene Lustacryl semi-gloss waterborne enamel. I have decided I want a lower gloss. Can I sand the wall and paint Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen straight over top?

A. If the Resene Lustacryl has been applied for two weeks or less you can overcoat with Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen without the need for sanding.

June 2016

Q. Could you advise as to what I should use to remove old paint from metal window latches?

A. Not an easy undertaking but a 3M Rust and Paint Removal Disc may work. This fits on an electric drill.

June 2016

Q. Can I paint over my Melamine kitchen benches and what should I use? This is simply to change the colour, not to make them harder or more durable.

A. Using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner ensure the surfaces to be painted are clean and free from grease, paying particular attention to hand contact areas. Apply a thin coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer and allow to cure without water contact for at least 48 hours before overcoating. Then apply two coats of Resene Lustacryl semi-gloss waterborne enamel. Roll all coats using the recommended roller sleeve.

The new paint system will take five days to develop good initial adhesion and continue to cure for an additional three weeks until full cure occurs. In the early stages the paint surface will not have good resistance to cleaners or abrasion as these features develop as the film undergoes curing.

June 2016

Q. We have a new Garapa timber deck. What clear finish do you suggest I use? We have left it to weather for about a month.

A. We do not recommend water white clear finish for any exterior timber substrate.

June 2016

Q. I am stripping my old weatherboards right back to wood. After priming, how soon must I apply topcoats? If the time the primer is exposed is longer do I need to sand the old primer off and start again?

A. Ideally topcoats should be as soon as the primer has reached minimum overcoat time, rather than after an extended time of weathering which may cause the primer to degrade and then require repriming. It really depends upon how long you will be leaving the primer exposed to weathering.

Topcoats have better weathering properties than primers so if you could prime and apply one topcoat and then apply the second topcoat at a later date, suggest within six months.

June 2016

Q. We are renovating a bathroom/toilet area and it will be lined with GIB® Aqualine. Can you recommend an appropriate undercoat/sealer and topcoat?

A. Apply a seal coat of Resene Sureseal, an undercoat of Resene Quick Dry Primer Undercoat and then two coats of a Resene waterborne enamel.

June 2016

Q. What sort of paint are the tester paints made out of? Is it concrete paint?

A. The testpots can be used for painting concrete as long as the concrete is first sealed with Resene Sureseal. Most Resene testpots contain Resene Lumbersider low sheen exterior/interior paint.

June 2016

Q. Am I able to use Resene Sureseal to prime some MDF board before painting it with a waterbased paint?

A. No, our recommended primer for MDF is Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat.

June 2016

Q. I have a salt water swimming pool that is bordered by limestone. Would Resene Aquapel be suitable to seal the limestone and resist the effects of salt water? Some of the limestone has deteriorated, so I'm looking to encapsulate the stone and prevent further decay.

A. Resene Solventborne Aquapel will only give water repellence and no surface consolidation.

You could however try Resene Stone Strengthener.

June 2016

Q. What would be the best surface I could paint a mural on that will be mounted on a wall around a swimming pool?

A. Fibre cement. Envelope prime with Resene Concrete Primer then use Resene waterborne paints (this includes Resene testpots) for painting the mural.

June 2016

Q. What paint can I use on old faded aluminium window frames? They are about 30 years old and factory coated and have not been painted since being installed.

A. Scrub down using Resene Paint Prep and Housewash diluted and used to label directions and a Scotchbrite pad. When dry apply a coat of Resene Armourcote 221 epoxy primer and finish with two coats of a Resene Uracryl 400 Series finish tinted colour.

June 2016

Q. I have to paint a bathroom with some oil based Resene Polythane. It says on the tin not to paint when wet. I haven't got much choice of time. If I keep the window ajar and have a panel heater on low would that work ok?

A. If you use a solventborne polyurethane clear such as Resene Qristal and apply each coat at times when the bathroom is not used and then heat the room you may well get away with it.

June 2016

Q. I have a cavity house finished with 25mm plaster. It was a former leaky home and 10 years ago was redone appropriately. It needs to be repainted and I have two quotes. One recommends a full elastomeric membrane based system and the other advises against it (because it can bubble). Can you give me your opinion and pros and cons please?

A. Hi build conventional (Resene X-200) and elastomeric (Resene X-300E) water borne coatings are used to give weathertightness. If applied correctly to a correctly prepared substrate there should be no blistering or loss of adhesion associated with either coating type.

June 2016

Q. Is a U.V. protection coating advised on the painted cement and plaster of an exposed statue made of cement bricks? This is a new structure and due to constraints in access, because of its height, we are exploring the possibilities for less frequent repainting.

A. If the topcoat paint is an exterior waterborne coating then probably not. However a coat of Resene Clearcoat UVS will protect the pigmented paint from erosion and U.V.

June 2016

Q. We want to put Resene Aquapoxy on timber. Can I prime with Resene Quick Dry?

A. You can use Resene Quick Dry as the primer for Resene Aquapoxy.

June 2016

Q. Is there a coloured self priming deck paint in the Resene range of paints?

A. For a new timber deck that will not leach tannins, we recommend Resene Lumbersider.

June 2016

Q. I know that Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen can be used as an alternative to Resene Blackboard Paint if extra colour is required. Can Resene SpaceCote Flat be used instead of Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen?

A. We recommend Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen/Blackboard Paint normally as it is easier to dust as it's a smoother surface. Flatter finishes tend to have a rougher micro surface finish which helps diffuse the light.

June 2016

Q. I'm looking for a colour to match a cmyk colour our graphic designers are using for an exhibition. Do you have a colour in your range or can this be done?

A. You can look this up on our website to find similar Resene colours. Paint colours don't normally perfectly match CMYK (they are different colour systems) so we recommend that you view physical swatches of the colours to check they suit. Go to www.resene.com/findacolour and then type in the CMYK you are looking for. Then click search and it will bring up suggestions.
