Regional and special colour palettes

Whangarei District - Rural Production, Coastal Countryside or Countryside Zoning Design controls in the rural environments

Introduced in 2018 and applies if you plan to build a house in Whangarei District in an area which is either Rural Production, Coastal Countryside or Countryside zoning. Check with the Whangarei District Council to confirm any colour restrictions that may apply to your project.

Refer to BS5252. The colour selection for buildings and structures must be made from the following indicators (based on the Auckland Council publication 'Colour for Buildings').

Walls/facades and joinery

Reflectance Value (RV) and Greyness Groups. The predominant walls colours, have a RV rating of:

• No more than 30% and no less than 20% for Greyness Group A.
• No more than 30% and no less than 15% for Greyness Group B.
• No more than 30% and no less than 10% for Greyness Groups C and D.
• Colours from Greyness Group E are not permitted.

An RV rating of:

• No more than 25% for Greyness Group A.
• No more than 25% for Greyness Group B.
• No more than 25% for Greyness Group C.
