Q&A   p. 23

Q. For a building built with concrete tilt slabs and painted, how frequently do you recommend washing?

A. We recommend an annual wash down, using Resene Paint Prep and Housewash, paying particular attention to areas not subject to regular rain washing.

March 2017

Q. I have a project that will be clad with Shadowclad® Groove Ultra plywood and we are looking to paint it black. Is it better painted or stained and which of your products would you recommend?

A. As long as the cladding is not a bracing element then there is no colour restriction. Staining with a Resene Woodsman stain requires more maintenance than application of a solid paint finish.

Depending upon the gloss level chosen the recoat time for a solid paint system will be in the order of 8-10 years if the Resene CoolColour™ version of the paint system is used. Resene Cool Colours do not render the surface cool to touch but reflect more heat, near infra-red radiation than the same colour made on non-cool pigmentation. Our recommendation when using dark topcoat colours is to apply a white base coat (such as Resene Quick Dry Waterborne Primer Undercoat) and then apply two coats of colour.

March 2017

Q. I wish to use a matt finish on kitchen cabinetry for a job I am proposing. Which paint would you recommend?

A. Resene SpaceCote Flat waterborne enamel is the only flat finish we have.

March 2017

Q. What would be the maximum period of time I could spend painting my 107 sq m one-storey board and batten house, first undercoated with Resene Quick Dry, then two topcoats of Resene CoolColour™ (Delta). I ask because I'm trying to do a lot of it myself, but I'm not fast, and I don't want to not do a great job, just to save money. I may need help if I can't do the paint over a certain period of time.

A. I would not leave the primer exposed for more than a month; however, the first coat of topcoat can be left for much longer periods before second coating, but ideally within three months. If either is being left, then ensure that the areas are washed down, using Resene Paint Prep and Housewash diluted and used to label directions before overcoating.

March 2017

Q. A moisture detection consultant mentioned membrane paint as a good idea over Hardiboard® sheet. I have a 20 year old garage wall, with its original Resene Lumbersider, still in good condition. It seems time, though, to recoat it. Would it be advisable despite the extra cost? I can see membrane paint is primarily to deal with expansion and contraction.

A. In principle, if there are no water ingress issues with the existing paint system then there is no need for a higher build system to achieve weathertightness.

However if the current system is chalk free and sound to give a belts and braces approach, there is value in applying two coats of Resene X-200 or a single coat of Resene X-200 and then the two coats of Resene Lumbersider.

March 2017

Q. I have a new kitchen with plywood joinery and was wondering what might be the best clear coat to use on it? My walls are also plywood and I have been using Resene Aquaclear on them but wondered if the kitchen might need something hardier to cope with steam etc.

A. Resene Aquaclear would be our best single pack option.

March 2017

Q. I wish to paint a sheet of corflute, what preparation is required?

A. Ensure the corflute is degreased using Resene Paint Prep and Housewash diluted and used to label directions, then apply a primer coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat and finish with two coats of any Resene waterborne topcoat, chosen to meet the exposure environment/end use.

March 2017

Q. When using the Resene Concrete Seal 3 in 1 inside does it let off formaldehyde fumes? Do you need to wear a respirator?

A. The product is solvent based so there will be solvents released as the paint cures but no formaldehyde is in the product so none will be released as it cures.

March 2017

Q. I need to replace some cedar weatherboards. Do I need any special primers on clean timber?

A. If you are going to apply a solid waterborne paint finish then the Resene primer we recommend is Resene Wood Primer.

March 2017

Q. We have been trying to remove about three layers of old paint from concrete steps and then we want to paint them a different colour. Do we need to remove all the layers of paint? Will the new paint hide the unevenness of the old paint? What product do you recommend to remove the paint?

A. Diamond grinding is the most effective way to remove multiple layers of paint from a concrete substrate. A new paint system will not produce a uniformly smooth finish if there are areas of the old paint system remaining.

March 2017

Q. I am doing some repair work in our bathroom: I have filled and repaired some small cracks on the walls and ceiling due to moisture. The room was painted with Resene oil based enamel on the walls and on the ceiling. I have repaired all the small cracks with filler and sanded them smooth. I used an oil based undercoat over them and then I put one coat of some waterbased enamel.

Is it OK to put a waterbased enamel topcoat over an oil-based undercoat? If not, should I sand it back or what should I do next?

A. You can apply a Resene waterborne enamel over Resene Enamel Undercoat. For the ceiling and especially the ceiling area above an open shower top I would apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat if you choose to use a Resene waterborne enamel topcoat.

March 2017

Q. I'm considering recolouring 30 year old anodised bronze aluminium doors and windows. The original bronze is fading and they all look very tired. The location is by the sea and I'm surprised that there is no total loss of the anodising or signs of major oxidation/salt damage. I searched your website and found Resene Imperite 413 which looks to be perfect. I then found your previous questions and answers covered the same topic. However the products recommended vary. For example I see Resene Imperite 503, Resene Armourcote 220 and 221, Resene Uracryl 402 and 400. So can you please advise the latest products? I'd like to spray if possible so can you guide me through preparation and the spray process?

A. My best recommendation is to clean down using Resene Roof and Metal Wash diluted and used to label directions, then apply a coat of Resene Armourcote 221 and finish with two coats of Resene Uracryl 402 or Resene Uracryl 403.

March 2017

Q. Would it be usual for a cedar house to have one side of the house recoated with Pitch Black CoolColour, and the other without the CoolColour additive? Will this prove to be a problem?

A. Resene CoolColour™s are made by substituting the black pigment in a standard tint formulation with a black pigment that has increased reflection of near infrared radiation (heat). The CoolColour benefits would apply more to the north elevation as these are the elevation that receives the most intense weathering. It is not common to have a mix of cool and non-cool paints but this should not affect paint adhesion provided all areas where correctly prepared from the start.

March 2017

Q. I stained my macrocarpa cladding with Resene oil stain three years ago. I now want to paint over this. Can I paint right over it, or will it blister if I do not use an undercoat first? The stain is still in a pretty good condition.

A. Scrub down using Resene Timber and Deck Wash diluted and used to label directions then apply a full coat of Resene Wood Primer and finish with two coats of any Resene exterior waterborne topcoat. We suggest that if using a dark coloured topcoat that the Resene CoolColour™ version of the colour is used. The CoolColour paint will not make the painted surface cool to touch but will reflect more heat than the same colour made on non-cool pigmentation.

March 2017

Q. Can Resene copper metallic paint be applied to Hebel panels externally?

A. Yes, as long as there is a suitable base paint system.

March 2017

Q. Which paint do I use for a metal bed; I want to paint my bed gold. What steps and paint would I need?

A. Apply an adhesion coat of Resene Vinyl Etch then a coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat and finish with two coats of either Resene Super Gloss or Resene Lusta-Glo enamel.

March 2017

Q. Which product should I use to paint over a stained timber ceiling, currently a translucent yellow finish with white topcoat?

A. We recommend Resene Sureseal.

March 2017

Q. We have cedar wooden windows which are over the pool area. They had a clear varnish coating but it is all peeling off now. What is the best product to use after I strip the clear coat? Paint or stain? Due to the location of the windows we do not want to do it again for the next 10 years at least.

A. Clear or semi-transparent film forming varnishes are difficult to maintain under NZ conditions yet perform very well in countries where the UV level in incident radiation is lower.

For a long term system, painting is the only option. Strip all varnish back to bare timber and sand the timber paying particular to any greyed areas. Treat any mould with Resene Moss & Mould Killer diluted and used to label directions. Then apply a coat of Resene Wood Primer followed by a coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat and then finish with two coats of Resene Lustacryl. The topcoat will chalk over time but there should be no peeling or flaking.

March 2017

Q. We are using Resene Sonyx 101 to paint wide exterior fascia boards. It seems difficult to get a smooth finish without sticky-looking patches where the joins occur. It seems that once one small section is covered, the next section of paint needs to be applied very quickly with minimal layering off back into the prior area. Could you advise on how to avoid having a sticky looking patch at each join?

A. Lap marking can occur if the paint film is at an advanced state of dry when lapping over. This is seen during application under hot or windy conditions or a combination of both and can be reduced by addition of Resene Hot Weather Additive at the recommended level to the paint. Also, if possible, work in a continuous direction along a given board length.

March 2017

Q. I want to produce some artworks which are basically painted plywood for exterior use, hanging on fences, that type of thing. I'm wondering if your acrylic range is suitable for this, in particular whether I can use your metallic range. And most important, would I have to seal the paint with varnish for longer life. I have been told your metallic paint – e.g. Silver - loses the metallic look when varnished. Is there a way to have an exterior silver that is long lasting?

A. You will need to envelop prime the ply boards (exterior grade) with two coats of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat then apply Resene waterborne exterior paints. Then apply a coat of Resene Clearcoat UVS glaze. The glaze coat will enhance the metallic and also provide increased UV and erosion resistance to the underlying pigmented paint system.

March 2017

Q. What is the difference between thinning Resene Sonyx 101 paint with water and with Resene Hot Weather Additive?

A. Water thinning has an effect upon product viscosity and does not give a real extension of open time of the wet film.

Resene Hot Weather Additive may look like water but it is not. Addition of Resene Hot Weather Additive will extend the open time of the wet paint film to increase working time and also flow and levelling.

March 2017

Q. I have bought a double brick house that has been painted but is tired and needs redoing. Can you please advise how to pre-paint, clean and what type of paint should I use? I’m not exactly sure what type of brick, it is a red clay, and the house is ex-navy built in the 1920s. It has been painted, several times I would say. It is faded in parts and almost worn off in only a few places but mostly still good coverage.

A. Scrub down with Resene Paint Prep and Housewash diluted and used to label directions. Spot prime any bare areas with Resene Concrete Primer then apply two coats of Resene Lumbersider.

March 2017

Q. If X-200 is applied to unpainted concrete blocks, are you able to tell which blocks have been covered after it dries? We are looking at buying a house and the vendor has offered to seal the blocks. We want to know if we will be able to tell if he has done it and if he has done the ones high up.

A. Resene X-200 is a fully pigmented paint and if applied to block work it should be visually obvious that there is a coating on the blockwork. What is not easy to see is if the Resene X-200 system has been applied to ensure weathertightness of the coated blocks.

March 2017

Q. How often do you need to reapply Resene X-200 to maintain weathertightness?

A. There is a recoat time of around 8-10 years but this is usually only for aesthetics (surface chalk and the like), not because of weathertightness.

March 2017

Q. Can an earthquake make paint peel off window frames, doors etc because since the Kaikoura Earthquake it seems to be a lot more cracked than previously? Also, when I hosed the wooden Hardiplank® there seemed to be paint coming off between the boards.

A. Loss of adhesion is most often associated with dimensional changes of timber due to changes in timber moisture level or where there are multiple coats of (paint on a surface) and the stress of the paint system on underlying layers can cause failure. Where there is adhesion loss, what is revealed on the back of the flake and where the paint flake has been removed? This will assist in possibly explaining the adhesion failure. I have not seen any evidence to date to suggest that the movement of timber in an earthquake event can cause paint to lose adhesion.

March 2017

Q. We have just moved house and are looking to freshen it up by repainting all the walls and woodwork. We have an 8 month old and a 2 year old and are worried about the fumes being harmful to them. Could you please let me know what would be the best paints to use?

A. Any of the Resene Environmental Choice approved paints would be our recommendation. Once painting is completed allow at least a week with good ventilation before re occupying the painted area.

March 2017

Q. Are the colour charts made from the actual paint? Will the colour look real to the actual paint?

A. The colour chips on Resene paint colour charts are actually made using our paint which gives a more accurate result. Most people find it hard to visualise how a small chip will look on a wall. In our ColorShops we have a full colour library of A4 swatches of Resene colours that you can view. This is a great way to see more of a colour and have a better idea of how it will look in a larger scale.

Whether you use the paint inside or outside can also have an effect – a paint colour used outside tends to look lighter than the chart because the sunlight washes the colour out. Inside colours tend to look darker because there is not as much light.

March 2017

Q. Can you get the Resene FX Nightlight in a range of colours?

A. This product range is only available in one colour because if the product is tinted it affects the quality of the glow. That’s why glow in the dark products tend to be the same sort of colour. The glow ‘charges’ during the day and then the glow slowly disappears at night the longer the lights are off. To get a longer glow effect you need to apply more of the product (though there is a limit at which you won’t get any extra glow benefit).

Depending how you are using it, one option to get a range of glow effects in the dark is to use the Resene FX Fluoro range with black light. These will glow very brightly at night, and is the sort of product you would see used at a glow in the dark mini golf or similar. The black light picks up the fluoro and gives it a highlighter bright shine.

March 2017

Q. My painter says for a light colour he will have to do extra coats? How many coats are needed?

A. Normally two topcoats are sufficient for most colours. However, sometimes depending on the application tools and technique, the paint can get spread thinner, which means it takes an extra coat to colour.

To address this, we have a Resene Varishade undercoat colour that we recommend be used as an undercoat under light colours. This provides an even surface colour for the topcoat to go over and usually means two coats of tinted topcoat only.

March 2017

Q. What is the closest paint finish you do that is similar to ‘Eggshell’ for interior use?

A.For interior use, either of our low sheen finishes, Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen or Resene Zylone Sheen.

March 2017

Q. I am having the exterior of my home clad with Eco-ply. What products would you recommend to use for painting or staining the wood and would I need a sealer as well?

A. For staining we recommend Resene Woodsman. Or for a solid paint finish use Resene Wood Primer and two coats of Resene Sonyx 101 semi-gloss waterborne paint or Resene Lumbersider low sheen waterborne paint. If choosing dark colours then we recommend you use the Resene CoolColour™ version of Resene Woodsman, Resene Sonyx 101 or Resene Lumbersider.

March 2017

Q. I want to paint an old Formica table. Can you please tell me what product I need to do this?

A. Clean down using a cleaner such as Jif®; ensure all residues are removed.

Apply a thin coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer and allow to cure without water contact for at least 48 hours before overcoating. Then apply two coats of Resene Lustacryl or Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen. Roll all coats using the recommended roller sleeve.

The new paint system will take five days to develop good initial adhesion and continue to cure for an additional three weeks until full cure occurs. In the early stages the paint surface will not have good resistance to cleaners or abrasion as these features develop as the film undergoes curing. Note that painting will not reproduce the original features of the laminate.

March 2017

Q. Could you please advise me what product to use to seal unpainted concrete blocks? They have been laid for 10 years so are quite dirty with salt stains from mortar and mould etc. I want to leave them natural but would like to tidy them up and seal them to keep looking good.

A. We would normally recommend a solid paint finish for this situation. The only suggestion which will retain a natural look is to remove all loose efflorescence by power wire brushing then apply a saturation coat of Resene Solventborne Aquapel.

If you decide to paint then clean them down (then check pointing detail to ensure there is no possibility of water ingress from a failed mortar joint) to remove all surface contaminants then remove lose efflorescence by power wire brushing. Apply a full coat of Resene Sureseal. Then apply three coats of Resene X-200.

March 2017

Q. What are the appropriate products for the treatment of rust on galvanised steel handrail barriers?

A. If any areas of moss or mould infestation exist then treat them with Resene Moss & Mould Killer diluted and used to label directions. For heavy infestations more applications may be needed. Scrub down using Resene Paint Prep and Housewash diluted and used to label directions. Rinse clean or hose down with fresh water ensuring all salts are also removed.

Remove all areas of white corrosion material and as much red rust as is practicable and all paint that is flaking or unsound must be removed by using mechanical methods (3M Rust and Paint Removal Disc), chemical stripper or high pressure waterblasting taking care not to damage either the substrate or the surrounding areas.

Where under-film corrosion is taking place the existing paint must first be removed as above and then remove under film corrosion products taking care not to damage sound zinc coated areas. All paint edges must be feathered to a smooth finish.

Note: The performance of the subsequent paint systems will be largely dependent on the thoroughness of this surface preparation stage.

Ensure all edges of damaged paint are sound and immediately spot prime all areas of corrosion and any other bare metal with a full coat of the specified primer. Then prime using Resene ArmourZinc 120 to a dry film thickness of 75 microns.

March 2017

Q. We need to replace the old wallpaper in our bathroom. Do you need to seal the walls before hanging new wallpaper and what type of wallpaper would you recommend for a bathroom?

A. Yes, after removing the existing wallpaper, you will need to apply a coat of Resene Sureseal before re hanging. Full vinyl papers are recommended, these can be viewed at any Resene owned ColorShop.

March 2017

Q. We are about to tackle painting the exterior of our 100 year old wooden villa, as the current paint is flaking off. We wondered what products/process you would recommend. We don’t want to be doing this too frequently.

A. The only way to achieve a long term paint system is to totally strip off the current paint system. Given the age of the property then it is highly likely that there is a lead based paint hidden away below any recently applied paint.

Lead based paint can be removed using paint strippers or a heat gun and scraper as long as the heat gun output temperature does not exceed 400 degrees.

Then for the weatherboards, apply a full coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat and finish with two coats of Resene Sonyx 101 semi-gloss waterborne paint.

For windows and joinery use the same primer but finish with two coats of Resene Lustacryl semi-gloss waterborne enamel.

March 2017

Q. I have an 18ft caravan on site. It is not moveable. It needs a new coat of paint on the roof only. At the moment the roof is painted but dirty and oxidised, so will need cleaning and a primer. Can you please advise paint/prep? I would guess that it is an enamel and original.

A. Scrub down using Resene Paint Prep and Housewash diluted and used to label directions.
Then apply a full coat if Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat and allow to dry for 24 hours then apply two coats of Resene Uracryl 403.

March 2017

Q. Is it possible to use Lumbersider acrylic on weathered cedar?

A. Not without prep and priming. The primer type is dependent upon the condition of the weathered cedar.

March 2017

Q. I want to paint a 1990s Lockwood room white. There seems to be many products recommended but the advice/products appear to change with time. Could you please give me the updated version of how best to prepare and then paint, to ensure no bleeding from the vanished wood?

A. If the wood is varnished then this should be a sufficient film barrier to stop any bleed originating from the timber. However, staining may result from smoke stains or the like. Using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner ensure the surfaces to be painted are clean and free from grease, pay particular attention to hand contact areas.

Apply a thin coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer and allow to cure without water contact for at least 48 hours before overcoating. Then apply two coats of Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen.

The new paint system will take five days to develop a good initial adhesion and continue to cure for an additional three weeks until full cure occurs. In the early stages, the paint surface will not have a good resistance to cleaners or abrasion as these features develop as the film undergoes curing.

I suggest that you undertake a test patch of application of the Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer, if there is no sign of stain bleed than apply the white topcoat and check again. If there is stain bleed then you will need to apply a coat of Resene StainLock over the Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer and then topcoat.

March 2017

Q. What method of painting will give a more durable finish when painting bare unpainted weatherboards? Airless sprayer or brush?

A. We would usually recommend brush application of a primer but topcoats can be sprayed. Durability is determent by selection of paints and dry film thicknesses of the paint layers and not application method.

March 2017

Q. I am having my house repainted and I was thinking of having my ceilings painted in a low sheen finish so they can be wiped and the doors and trims to be painted in semi-gloss enamel.

A. You are correct, the higher the gloss level, the easier the painted surfaces are to wipe without burnishing/damaging the paint. Standard ceiling paints are easily burnished (wiped areas are glossier) with cleaning but is the common gloss level used, however Resene SpaceCote Flat gives good wipeability.

March 2017

Q. I want to paint vinyl coated cane, what type of paint would you recommend?

A. Apply a coat of Resene Vinyl Wallpaper Sealer then two coats of an appropriate Resene waterborne topcoat paint.

March 2017

Q. I have a 10L of Resene Summit Roof paint left over from when I painted my roof, can I use this on pre-painted blockwork on my garage?

A. Yes, if used for exterior painting, then the application of the Resene Summit Roof will not change the weathertightness of the substrate.

March 2017

Q. I am currently trying to decide on a colour for a glass splashback and like the colour Resene Emerge. I was wondering if there is a slightly darker tone of Resene Emerge as the testpot has come up a little lighter than the A4 sample that I borrowed from the Resene shop.

A. Low iron glass must be used for splashbacks. Colours viewed through standard glass will not be the same due to the green colour of the glass, so if you are looking at the colour using standard window glass this may explain the difference.

March 2017

Q. Would someone please be able to advise me on the best paint product to withstand scratching of dog claws on the threshold of our ranchslider? We have a large Golden Retriever, and as he exits or enters the house, his claws are scratching the paint (down to the bare wood underneath) on the wooden threshold.

A. It’s a difficult problem to address; the best paint would be two coats of two pack polyurethane but even this will not be totally immune to claw scratches. Sand the existing paint and apply 2 coats of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat (leave the second coat to cure for 24 hours before overcoating) then two coats of Resene Uracryl 403.The paint system will take seven days to achieve cure.

March 2017

Q. I have a number of plain, unglazed Australian made terracotta tiles left over from a project that I want to use in a new project. They have been sitting in plastic bags outdoors for 2 years and there is moss and mould on them, particularly along the edges. I am cleaning them carefully with a soft brush and water, but I feel there is likely to be some mould/moss residue. Can you recommend a product that would be safe to use on these tiles that would not bleach or otherwise discolour them?

A. Not sure if the tiles will change colour if subject to bleach solution, if not then soak the panels in Resene Moss & Mould Killer diluted and used to label directions for 24 hours then remove and soak in a number of water changes to remove the bleach residues. Then allow to dry.

However if bleach does caused an issue then the only alternative is to saturate the tiles with diluted Resene Deep Clean and leave for a week then soak in water as above.

March 2017

Q. I am looking to recoat a previously painted driveway and it must be water based. Is Resene Blacktop suitable or should I use the non-slip pavement paint, it’s only for foot traffic.

A.If it is an asphalt driveway, then Resene Blacktop is suitable.

March 2017

Q. I have an old villa and the paint is peeling. What would be the best options to strip the peeling paint with? Paint stripper, heat gun and sand paper and once cleaned up should I use pigmented sealer?

A. If the existing paint work has never been totally stripped then I suggest using a heat gun and a tungsten blade scraper. The temperature of the heat gun needs to be controlled with the gun set at a maximum temperature of 400°C. Ensure all flakes are collected and placed in a sealed bag for disposal and any sanding must be undertaken using wet and dry paper.
If the timber is matai or totara the primer to use is Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat. Use Resene Wood Primer as the primer for all other timbers. For opening joinery the topcoat must be a waterborne enamel (Resene Lustacryl (semi-gloss) or Resene Enamacryl (gloss)) and weatherboards should be painted in Resene Sonyx 101 or Resene Lumbersider.

March 2017

Q. I am preparing a spec for a renovation project with an existing painted steel corrugated roof in various states of repair. I believe the best option for this situation is either Resene Hi-Glo or Resene Hi-Glo CoolColour. The proposed colour has not been confirmed yet but will likely be dark. Is it possible to use the standard Resene Hi-Glo with a darker colour?

A. There is no reason why you cannot use Resene Hi Glo in either the non-cool or CoolColour™ version of the colour. There will be a greater heat reflectance with the CoolColour version of any colour. In principle given that the CoolColour will reflect more heat will mean an extension in the life of the paint before recoating is required. This extension will vary depending on variations in roof profiles and exposure conditions.

March 2017

Q. Can you please provide recommendations for an interior wall paint with good chemical resistance? We are currently building a small laboratory-room and the one existing wall has basic office paint, which needs to be repainted with a chemical resistant coating.

A. Ensure the existing waterborne paint is sound and clean of contaminants. Apply a full coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat and then finish with two coats of Resene Room Velvet.

March 2017

Q. Our front door is cedar and has been left as natural wood and oiled with tung oil. We would like to paint it a gloss black. It is under a veranda roof and is on the south side of the house so doesn't get any sun on it. The door is not exposed to the weather at all. We just need to know what to put on before the gloss paint. We have used a sealer to paint over dark stain before but thought oil might need something different. What should we use as an undercoat or primer?

A. Sand then apply a coat of Resene Wood Primer then apply two coats of Resene Super Gloss Enamel.

If the door was exposed to weathering, painting with a dark colour may cause issues with residual oils migrating to the surface as the door surface would get hot.

March 2017

Q. What product is the best treatment for brand new internal hollow core rimu doors? We already have existing ones that look like they are vanished with either a semi-gloss or a satin/flat finish. I have purchased Resene Qristal Clear. Is this ok to use?

A. Degrease using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner used to label directions paying particular attention to areas of hand contact. Then sand to provide a mechanical profile for the new clear system and yes you can then apply Resene Qristal Clear.

March 2017

Q. I want to paint some ‘closed’ louvre doors. They are currently stained a mid-brown and I want to paint them white. Could you advise what sort of prep work (i.e. undercoats) i would need to use? The final coats will be a semi-gloss Resene White.

A. Using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner ensure the surfaces to be painted are clean and free from grease, paying particular attention to hand contact areas. Apply a thin coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer and allow to cure without water contact for at least 48 hours before overcoating. If there are signs of bleeding of the stain colour please contact Resene Technical for further advice. Then apply two coats of Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen or Resene Lustacryl (semi-gloss finish). The new paint system will take five days to develop good initial adhesion and continue to cure for an additional three weeks until full cure occurs. In the early stages the paint surface will not have good resistance to cleaners or abrasion as these features develop as the film undergoes curing.

March 2017

Q. What is the effect of watering down waterbased paint?

A. Thinning up to 10% of a waterborne paint with water should have no effect upon stability of the thinned paint. However when applied to vertical surfaces there will be a lower wet film thickness that can be applied before runs or sagging occurs. When paint is thinned the dry film thickness per coat will be reduced and this may require additional material to be applied to meet data sheet dry film thicknesses. Note that excessive thinning can destabilise the paint.

March 2017

Q. I have mould on the shower/bathroom ceiling and it appears the paint is flaking on the ceiling, can you suggest something to use to fix this problem please?

A. Remove all loose and flaking paint then treat with Resene Moss & Mould Killer diluted and used to label directions. Ensure areas where the paint has been removed is sanded back to a sound feathered edge then spot prime bare substrate with Resene Sureseal. Then apply a full coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat and finish with two coats of any Resene Kitchen & Bathroom waterborne enamel topcoat. Allow at least three days cure with good ventilation before subjecting the newly painted surfaces to steam/condensation.

April 2017

Q. Is there a flat ceiling paint that is suitable for bathroom ceilings and is washable?

A. We recommend Resene SpaceCote Flat Kitchen & Bathroom.

Q. I am after some advice on a concrete sealer. Our house is built of concrete block and tilt slab - it is almost 6 years old and needs resealing and waterproofing. What is the best product to use for a clear finish?

A. Resene XC-700 System Treatment with Resene SB Aquapel will give a water repellent system, but not a weathertight system. The Resene XC-700 can be applied to both masonry and tilt slab. To function as a weathertight system, a saturation coat of Resene SB Aquapel needs to be first applied and if there is a sealer present then this cannot be achieved.

April 2017

Q. I am a fluid acrylic artist and pour paint on primed canvas. No brushes. I have to add water to the paint to get the right consistency to pour. The paint can crack and craze. Do you have a product I can add to the paint to prevent it cracking and crazing? I also think I need to thin the house paint a bit more.

A. Waterborne paint when applied in thick wet films will have a degree of surface cure but as the paint ages the water retained in the paint below the surface will cause the cracking (known as mud cracking).

Our waterborne paints contain thickeners which are present to allow for application to a vertical surface without sagging/running. These thickeners will reduce the ability of unthinned paint to flow out, which I suspect is counterproductive to what you need. Water will be the only thinning medium that you could use to reduce the thickener effect.

April 2017

Q. I have been buying your testpots and using them to paint wooden toys I'm making. I just got advised in another store that no interior paint is safe!! Can you give me any advice because I have made quite a few toys?

A. Resene testpots are made using a Resene Environmental Choice Approved paint. If the painted items are allowed to cure for two weeks then wiped down with warm water and a cloth then we see no issues with the coated items being used for children toys.

April 2017

Q. We have Melteca® kitchen cabinets that are in great condition however the colour is very outdated and I would like to paint over them. Is this possible with your Resene paints?

A. Yes you can paint over Melteca®.

April 2017

Q. I want to paint existing aluminium powder coated exterior joinery. It involves painting over the current, very faded, New Denim Blue colour (16 years old) with Silver Pearl. What is the recommended system?

A. Clean down using Resene Roof and Metal Wash diluted and used to label directions. Then apply a full coat of Resene Galvo One and follow with two coats of Resene Enamacryl tinted to your required colour. For colour fade control finish with a coat of Resene Clearcoat UVS.

April 2017

Q. I have a number of plain, unglazed Australian made terracotta tiles left over from a project that I want to use in a new project. They have been sitting in plastic bags outdoors for two years and there is moss and mould on them, particularly along the edges. I am cleaning them carefully with a soft brush and water, but I feel there is likely to be some mould/moss residue. Could you recommend a product that would be safe to use on these tiles (i.e. that would not bleach or otherwise discolour)?

A. Not sure if the tiles will change colour if subject to bleach solution; if not then soak the panels in diluted RResene Moss & Mould Killer diluted and used to label directions. for 24 hours then remove and soak in a number of water changes to remove the bleach residues. Then allow to dry.

However, if bleach does cause an issue then the only alternative is to saturate the tiles with diluted Resene Deep Clean and leave for a week then soak in water as above.

April 2017

Q. I have an old lino kitchen floor that I want to paint. It is glued down and has asbestos backing so I don't want to try to remove it or sand it. Do you have any suitable products to paint over it please that won't scratch or come off?

A. Then apply two coats of Resene Walk-on and overcoat with a coat of Resene Concrete Wax.

The new paint system will take five days to develop good initial adhesion and continue to cure for an additional three weeks until full cure occurs. In the early stages the paint surface will not have good resistance to cleaners or abrasion as these features develop as the film undergoes curing. Note that painting will not reproduce the original features of the flooring lino.

April 2017

Q. I've got a rabbit hutch that needs a bit of redoing. Are there any paints or testpots that are safe for the hutch?

A. The paint used for Resene testpots is an Environmental Choice Approved paint so should not pose any issues for the use you are planning to undertake. However, leave the paint to dry for 48 hours then wipe down with warm water and a cloth before placing the hutch back in use.

April 2017

Q. I have a small, outdoor first floor balcony about 1m x 2 m and I would like to paint the trafficable ‘floor’ surface. It has been waterproofed using fibreglass over a plywood substrate. The fibreglass is in good condition and I would lightly sand it. There is little traffic, but is out in the Hawkes Bay sun and rain. How about Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer followed by Resene Walk-on paint?

A. I suggest you use Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat as the primer over the sanded clean substrate then apply the Resene Walk-on.

April 2017

Q. I have a coffee table that I thought was timber but it turns out to be a composite material. It has a glass top. I now need a paint finish that resembles either copper or a similar metal finish. I have sanded it and also want to confirm that I need to undercoat it first. I am a distance to my nearest store so would appreciate some advice before I head off.

A. After sanding you will need to apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat then two coats of the Resene Enamacryl Metallic paint and finish with a coat of Resene Aquaclear.

April 2017

Q. I have a new fibreglass front door. I have Resene Lumbersider for the colour, but what undercoat should I use?

A. Degrease the door surface using Resene Paint Prep and Housewash diluted and used to label directions, and then apply a primer coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat.

April 2017

Q. I want to repaint my deck floor. The floor is marine plywood and was last painted with Resene Lumbersider (Resene Double Friar Grey) approximately two years ago. The deck is north facing and it gets a lot of sun and can be hot under foot. I have heard that we may have been better to use a paving paint. What is your recommendation? If possible I would like to keep it the same colour. There is no flaking of paint but it is looking dull. There are some surface cracks which we have found is common with plywood.

A. Surface checking of ply is not unexpected. Rub down with Resene Paint Prep and Housewash then apply two coats of Resene Lumbersider CoolColour™ version of the colour. The painted surface will not be cool to touch but reflect more heat (be cooler) than the same colour made using non CoolColour pigments.

April 2017

Q. Can I paint a water based ceiling paint over an alkyd undercoat?

A. There is no technical reason why you cannot overcoat the alkyd undercoat (as long as the undercoat is not more than four weeks old) with a waterborne ceiling paint.

April 2017

Q. Can I put pigmented sealer over existing paint? I have had the room repaired and there is some plasterboard and some existing painted walls.

A. Resene Sureseal pigmented sealer is not designed to go over a painted surface, not to say it can't but it is for the sealing of stopped paperfaced boards, not a painted surface.

April 2017

Q. The cladding on the house is Shadowclad® with cedar batons. It was painted eight years ago with Resene Woodsman wood oil stain. The house is on the coast. How should we prepare the surface before repainting? The main option is to wash down with water.

A. If stained, scrub down with Resene Timber and Deck Wash diluted and used to label directions.

April 2017

Q. We need to coat a new boat shed build, made with battens and board plywood. We hope to paint to minimise maintenance, using a gloss with a black/blue such as Resene Bastille or Resene Double Cod Grey. What undercoat product should we use, and should it be tinted to match, if so with what tint?

A. There will be surface checking of the ply, painted or unpainted (dark paint colours will highlight this). The best system would be to prime using two coats Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat then apply two coats of Resene Sonyx 101 tinted to your colour (CoolColour™ formulation) and finish with a full coat of Resene Clearcoat UVS.

April 2017

Q. I would like to know what paint to use on a faded steel garage door that is only four years old. I was thinking of rolling it and prefer to use a semi-gloss. The door is Grey Friars and it has a small indent finish on it.

A. Scrub down using Resene Roof and Metal Wash diluted and used to label directions, then apply a full coat of Resene Galvo-Prime and two coats of Resene Sonyx 101, tinted to the CoolColour™ version of your selected colour.

April 2017

Q. Our builder has used cream filler in the nail holes, will fence paint cover this?

A. Two coats of a solid paint colour should block out the filler; if in doubt spot prime the filler with the paint.

March 2017

Q. I am after some advice on concrete sealer. Our house is built of concrete block and tilt slab. It is almost six years old and needs resealing and waterproofing. What is the best product to use for a clear finish?

A. We recommend a Resene XC-700 system treatment with Resene Solventborne Aquapel, which will give a water repellant system but not weathertight system.

April 2017

Q. I wish to take advantage of your sale and purchase my roof paint now. Is it OK to store it until next summer? Also I am repainting a COLORSTEEL® roof that has lost 90% of its colour. What primer should I use?

A. If the paint is stored in a cool well ventilated area it should be fine until summer; give the contents a thorough stir before using. After cleaning to remove surface chalk apply a full coat of Resene Galvo One.

April 2017

Q. CHH Wood products recommend the use of Shadowclad® Ultra where suitable paint or film forming stains are being used.

It goes on to say, Shadowclad® Ultra is not suitable for use with penetrating stains. The selection, application and maintenance of coatings are the responsibility of the building owners and the professionals that they engage. For advice on specific coating systems and their suitability for use with Shadowclad® Ultra, always refer to the coating manufacturer.

Can you please advise what would be the recommended stain we would use from Resene for the Shadowclad® Ultra product?

A. This comes from the ShadowClad® Ultra installation guide: Penetrating Stains - Penetrating stains show the natural texture and character of timber and are widely used on Shadowclad® exterior cladding.

Penetrating stains offer less protection for panels from exterior weathering than paints and film forming stains which are considerably thicker in surface film build. Due to their translucency, penetrating stains are likely to require additional coating maintenance during the panel’s life to maintain an acceptable visual appearance.

Penetrating stains should only be used on Shadowclad® Natural and are not recommended for use on Shadowclad® Ultra.

CHH Woodproducts does not recommend the use of linseed oil based coatings, which have the potential to promote mould growth in this product. However, if you want a film forming stain finish then you can use Resene Forester.

April 2017

Q. We have a laundry area and are considering painting over polyurethane. Are you able to give us advice about what paints to use as well as the procedure?

A. Assuming it is a polyurethane clear the following can be used: Using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner ensure the surfaces to be painted are clean and free from grease, pay particular attention to hand contact areas. Apply a thin coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer and allow to cure without water contact for at least 48 hours before overcoating. Then apply two coats of Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen.

April 2017

Q. What is the best way to do blonding over plywood? This is in a staircase where all the walls are plywood.

A. We recommend you use Resene Colorwood Whitewash.

April 2017

Q. I have just read about your Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer and was wondering whether this would work on a natural varnish wooden tongue and groove ceiling. I’m looking to paint it a light colour but prefer not to have a massive sanding job, including the gap between each wooden board. Would your sealer product provide the adhesive ability for the coats of paint rather than having to deep sand all the varnish off?

A. Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer is our adhesion primer for previously varnished surfaces. If there is a possibility of smoke/soot contamination then the surface will need to be cleaned down to remove these contaminants.

April 2017

Q. Can I use Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer on the tiles in our bathroom (above the sink and bench, around the base of the bath and on the shower wall)? The shower is over the bath, or is it more for a drier area like the kitchen?

Then apply two coats of Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen.

April 2017

Q. We have an old Lockwood home, painted in clear polyurethane. We are considering painting the walls. What prep and product would be needed to do this, and how nasty (chemical-wise) are the products, for sensitive noses and skin?

Then apply two coats of Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen.

April 2017

Q. Is there a special paint that will work on badly nicotine stained walls and roof?

A. You will need to use a stain sealer such as Resene Sureseal prior to application of waterborne topcoats. Wash down using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner before applying the sealer.

April 2017

Q. Can I use the Resene testpot paint on outside woodwork?

A. Yes, the paint used for testpots is an exterior grade waterborne paint. It can also be used on interior surfaces.

April 2017

Q. I want to paint over old 70s Seratone® in our shower room and laundry. To take the sheets of Seratone® off would be too big a job, plus a lot more expensive to replace rather than try to paint over. It is like a laminated smooth surface (horrible yellow/green colour) with brown hardboard on back. I also have old yellow/green laminated cupboards in my laundry that I would like to do the same. I have read that I can apply Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer to help the paint adhere to the surface. Could you please advise how I should prepare the Seratone® and cupboard surfaces prior to applying Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer (do I do any sanding)? The sheets of Seratone® are attached to the walls with white plastic moulded jointers that they slide into. How do I prepare these as well?

Once I have prepared and then applied the Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer, what is my next step to complete the refurbishment? What do I apply for a topcoat?

A. The following can be used for areas with the exception of the actual shower lining; using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner ensures the surfaces to be painted are clean and free from grease, pay particular attention to hand contact areas.

Apply a thin coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer and allow to cure without water contact for at least 48 hours before overcoating. Then apply two coats of Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen.

April 2017

Q. I am part of a volunteer group that is restoring an old cemetery. Some of the more modern granite headstones need the engraved lettering repainted. What primer should we use and what type of paint for the topcoat? Does it need priming?

A. We have used the following for the purpose you have requested. Ensure the lettering is clean from all contaminants then re-apply colour using Resene Lumbersider. Using a sharp blade, remove areas outside of the lettering.

We have found that the profile of the cut out lettering does not require priming to achieve adhesion of the Resene Lumbersider.

April 2017

Q. My interior walls are match lining with scrim and paper. Can one still hang scrim as a base for wallpaper? Alternatively, is there any lining that can be used? At issue is that the plasterboard is too thick for the skirting, so all skirting would have to be removed at the risk of damaging the walls and this is a 100 year old heritage house. I am thinking about a ply?

A. Yes, you can hang wallpaper over scrim, however due to its unstable nature the wallpaper needs to be lapped as opposed to butting the seams. The lapping is necessary because the scrim is always moving i.e. in damp weather the surface can bag or expand, but in hot dry weather it will tighten so if the seams were not lapped these would open and close according to the weather.

All products can be hung and joins butted if the installer uses cross lining. Cross lining allows the wallpaper to be hung and the seams or joins butted.

Steps:

  1. Strip all existing wallpaper from the scrim.
  2. Wet scrim.
  3. While wet/damp tighten scrim (out first/ then down).
  4. Ensure all fixings are rust resistant.
  5. Once dry, leave to dry completely.
  6. Paste lining paper with SHUR STIK granulated paste, HALLSBEELINE flake or METYLAN special, mixed to a medium to thick consistency.
  7. Hang lining paper HORIZONTALLY, starting from the skirting.
  8. Hang each wall in turn returning onto the opposite wall by 30mm.
  9. Lap each length approximately 10mm.
  10. Once finished, allow to dry completely.
  11. Apply two coats of size.
  12. Hang the chosen wallpaper and butt joins in the normal way.
April 2017

Q. Can you advise a process for painting over powder coating?

A. Spec Sheet 4:8/2 ‐ Weathered Aluminium; including Anodised, Powder Coated. The surface will typically be dulled with some corrosion present (aluminium oxide AlO2). Anodised and powder coated aluminium will be chalky. A thorough careful clean is required to remove chalked paint and contaminants. There is likely to be mould or moss growth on powder coated surfaces

Step 1: Treat moss and mould with Resene Moss & Mould Killer diluted and used to label directions. For heavy infestations, an additional application(s) may be needed.

Step 2: Scrub down using Resene Roof and Metal Wash diluted and used to label directions.

Rinse clean with copious quantities of clean water to remove oils, grease, dust and any other contaminants. Test the surface is degreased by wiping with clean cotton wool. Repeat the process, if necessary.

Step 3: Thoroughly wet sand to remove any areas of corrosion, and to remove aluminium oxide layer and provide a better key for adhesion. Any pitted areas should be wet sanded to a smooth profile. If possible, any sharp edges on the aluminium profile should be rounded off, to allow better coating film build.

For window joinery, special care is needed to avoid coating any rubber seals/sealants with any paints specified in this section. If practical, remove the rubber seal (and possibly the window glass) and once painted, replace with new rubber seals.

The mitre joint in aluminium windows will be more noticeable the lighter the colour selected.

The paint system will depend upon the exposure environment.

April 2017

Q. Our old house has an extension Kliplok roof (5 x 11m) about 45 years old. Rust has started on the roof and Lysaght recommended a primer then acrylic.

A. If it has taken this long for corrosion to appear, the galvanising has performed very well along with what I assume is a relatively low corrosivity exposure zone. In the situation you describe, we would normally specify Resene Alumastic surface tolerant epoxy applied to achieve a dry film thickness of 175 microns.

April 2017

Q. I am looking to restain an older wooden bed and am planning on using Resene Colourwash Whitewash. I read on another question, that it can be applied over existing polyurethane? Do I need to lightly sand the original polyurethane first?

A. You can apply Resene Colorwood Whitewash to a cleaned (Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner) clear coated surface as long as the clear is well sanded to provide a mechanical key for the new paint system (there is no requirement to completely sand off the entire clear thickness).

April 2017

Q. I am going to paint a design onto a mailbox. However, it is a glossy white mailbox and I am going to be using acrylic paints to paint flowers onto it. Do I need to do any prep work to the mailbox before I paint?

A. Yes, you will have to apply an adhesion primer; our recommendation is Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer.

April 2017

Q. Can you please advise which type of paint is best to use on a garage door? This door is about 10 years old and it is metal and in good condition.

A. Scrub down using Resene Roof and Metal Wash diluted and used to label directions then apply two coats of Resene Summit Roof.

April 2017

Q. How do I paint a white ceramic platter, black, so the paint does not flake or chip? We won't be eating off these platters but are using them for a candle table display.

Then apply two coats of Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen.

April 2017

Q. I have a particle board floor that has been sanded and polyurethaned about 12 years ago. I want to paint it so is there paint I can apply directly, or do I have to sand it or undercoat it first?

A. Sorry, there is no topcoat paint that can be applied directly to the varnished surface. We recommend the following - using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner, ensure the surfaces to be painted are clean and free from grease, paying particular attention to hand contact areas.

Apply a thin coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer and allow to cure without water contact for at least 48 hours before overcoating. Then apply two coats of Resene Lustacryl. Roll all coats using the recommended roller sleeve.

The new paint system will take five days to develop good initial adhesion and continue to cure for an additional three weeks until full cure occurs. In the early stages the paint surface will not have good resistance to cleaners or abrasion as these features develop as the film cures fully.

April 2017

Q. Can you paint wardrobe shelves in Resene Zylone Sheen or will objects stick to the paint? What paint is recommended? I've used Resene Zylone Sheen on the bedroom walls and wanted the wardrobe to be the same colour and preferably the same paint.

A. We would recommend using Resene waterborne enamel such as Resene Lustacryl (semi-gloss) or Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen for this application.

April 2017

Q. My daughter has an old white Formica® benchtop in her kitchen which is stained and horrible. Is this able to be painted? The cupboards are painted in Resene Truffle.

Then apply two coats of Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen.

April 2017

Q. What metallic product do you recommend for a splashback?

A. We sell Resene Imperite IF 503 Metallics to some commercial splashback painters, which they overcoat with a solid grey coat of the same product before installation. This is a 2 pack paint that is best applied by spray to achieve a uniform finish.

To give the same colour when viewed through the glass the glass has to be low iron glass.

April 2017

Q. Do I need to put an additive in my bathroom wall paint?

A. Not if you use any of the Resene Kitchen & Bathroom waterborne enamel paints as these contain added mould and anti-bacterial protection.

April 2017

Q. I am painting the outside of my timber house. I applied a Resene Quick Dry primer. How long can it last if I don't apply a topcoat?

A. For best results, overcoat as soon as possible, but the primed surface can be left for up to a month before topcoating. If the primer is left exposed, ensure that it is washed down with Resene Paint Prep and Housewash, diluted and used to label directions before application of topcoats.

April 2017

Q. I want to paint my house and I have a little baby. I want to know, is there any chemical material that is not good for the baby? Can I move in to the house immediately after I have painted the house or do I have to wait for a few days?

A. If you use a Resene Environmental Choice Paint System and leave the paint to cure with good ventilation of at least two weeks, then there are no known issues with using the room for a baby.

April 2017

Q. I have a well-worn painted and polyurethane plywood kitchen/dining floor, which needs repainting. What system should I use and are the new polyurethane coatings less yellowing? Can I paint polyurethane over Resene Enamacryl?

A. A thorough degrease and sand of the existing coatings is required before recoating. Then apply a full coat of Resene Quick Dry Waterborne primer undercoat. Then apply two coats of colour using tinted Resene Enamacryl (allow to cure for at least two days) and finish with two coats of Resene Uracryl GraffitiShield Clear. The GraffitiShield Clear will not yellow.

April 2017

Q. I would like to paint a very old extendable table. I do not know if it is varnished or not. Can it be done, and what preparation, must I do, and what sealer and topcoat should I use? If I splash water on the table, the water beads up.

A. There are two main possibilities - varnish or the table has been waxed with a furniture polish. Using Resene Automotive and Light Industrial Wax and Grease Remover, wipe down and change rags often.

Then thoroughly sand and dust off and apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat and finish with two coats of Resene Lustacryl.

April 2017

Q. I am repainting the bathroom. The paint is in very good condition, about 10 years old. Does it need sanding or a good wash down? Can I undercoat the ceiling and walls with Resene Quick Dry waterborne undercoat?

A. To be safe, sand, to provide a mechanical key for the new paint system and yes, apply a full coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat. Then apply two coats of Resene Kitchen & Bathroom waterborne enamel or traditional solventborne enamel.

April 2017

Q. What type of paint would I buy to paint over a painted wooden fence?

A. We recommend Resene Lumbersider.

April 2017

Q. I was told about a product you have that can prime/seal old lacquered door frames and skirting boards without the need to sand first, and the paint won't chip. What is this product called?

A. Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer is our recommended adhesion primer for this situation. Allow the Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer to cure for 48 hours then apply a thin coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat and finish with two coats of a Resene waterborne enamel topcoat.

April 2017

Q. I have a plastic piece of kid’s furniture which I'd like to paint. Your comments say that metallic paints need a coloured base coat. Does that mean the base coat has to be same colour as the topcoat?

A. The basecoat is a solid colour which is needed to achieve the final colour after application of the metallic topcoat. The basecoat is always a tinted Resene waterborne paint. Waterborne paint adhesion is poor to polyethylene and polypropylene plastics, so the type of plastic would need to be identified proceeding.

April 2017

Q. I have a cream outdoor table I would like to paint a metallic grey. Would your metallic paints stick to it?

A. Apply a coat of Resene ConcreteSeal 3 in 1 then two coats of Resene Enamacryl Metallic and finish with a coat of Resene Clearcoat UVS.

April 2017

Q. I have the best part of a 4 litre can of Summit Roof left over and I need to paint new wooden outdoor steps the same shade. Would the Resene Summit Roof product perform OK as a walk on product?

A. Resene Summit Roof is formulated using a relatively soft conventional waterborne resin which means that resistance to foot traffic will not be as good as Resene Walk-on, which is purpose designed for walking on. Also the Resene Summit Roof product does not contain aggregate to give wet slip resistance.

April 2017

Q. We have recently looked over a log construction residence which is for sale. The timber is Canadian oregon and cedar. The property is located on the West Coast of the South Island. Despite the wet climate the timber looked parched and lifeless, if we were to purchase this property, what would you suggest using to bring life back to the timber? The property is 28 years old and the timber is in its natural look.

A. Oregon (Douglas-fir) heartwood is rated as Class 3 durability and can be used for above-ground purposes, but the sapwood is non-durable. The timber cannot be pressure treated with copper, chromium and arsenic (CCA), but can be boron treated to Hazard Classes H3.1 and H1.2. If the Oregon timbers are exterior and the age of the construction, then there is a high degree of possibility in the West Coast climate, that the timber may be at the end of or exceeded the recognised durability for this timber species. To slow the rate of timber breakdown we recommend you stain it using Resene Woodsman Wood Oil but all stains require regular maintenance to maintain performance.

April 2017

Q. I want to paint over a ceiling and walls that have a dark stain, with a polyurethane finish. I would like to use a product to cover the stain and paint a light colour over it, without having to sand it hard out to get the cover roughened up. Is there a product I can use? My friend used a Resene product to paint over shiny tiles and it’s worked well. What do you recommend?

A. Use Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer as the adhesion primer onto the varnished surface.

Q. We purchased cheap melamine coated shelving and it attracts mould growth. This is the only surface in the room that attracts mould growth.

A. Mould growth is usually an indication of environmental conditions and not generally related to substrate type. Mould growth can occur on any substrate under cold, dark and damp conditions, you could possibly use the following system to paint the melamine surface; using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner ensure the surfaces to be painted are clean and free from grease, pay particular attention to hand contact areas. Apply a thin coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer and allow to cure without water contact for at least 48 hours before over coating. Then apply two coats of Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen Kitchen & Bathroom. Roll all coats using the recommended roller sleeve.

The new paint system will take five days to develop good initial adhesion and continue to cure for an additional three weeks until full cure occurs. In the early stages the paint surface will not have good resistance to cleaners or abrasion as these features develop as the film undergoes. However the paint system will not reproduce the features of the original laminate.

Q. I used contract filler to fill holes in the house fascia board yesterday and sanded today. I have been told by the builder I should've primed straight after sanding - is this an issue? I feel I've totally wasted my time.

A. When linseed oil putties were used to fill nail holes, the practice was to prime first, and then fill, as this stopped the linseed oil from moving out of the putty into the timber. Modern waterborne fillers do not have exact same requirement to be applied to a primed timber surface but it is still a good practice to do so. If there is no sign of shrinkage of the filler then you may well not have a problem. Spot prime the filler with Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat before topcoating.

Q. Our tennis club has two dark blue Plexipave tennis courts that have white netball court lines on them. The netball lines are no longer needed and they make distinguishing the white tennis court lines difficult.
What paint and technique do you recommend to paint over the netball lines in order to hide them?

A. As far as I can ascertain, the court surface is a rubber aggregate bound with an acrylic resin. Given this, I would expect any of our exterior waterborne paints to adhere to the surface however; I do recommend you undertake a test using a Resene testpot to confirm this. Allow the paint to dry for at least four days then check adhesion before continuing.

April 2017

Q. Can I use Resene Summit Roof paint on timber? I want to trial the colour on my window sills and will repaint over the top with timber paint. The sills are very large, and I imagine new paint sticks very well, so didn't want to strip it off.

A. Yes, as long as any bare timber is primed.

April 2017

Q. We have a Hinuera Stone house, built in the 1970s when it was fashionable to grout with a contrast colour - in our case it's a pinky brown colour with cream coloured stone. Is it possible to recolour the existing grout to something matching the stone colour?

A. It’s not an easy ask to achieve a colour change to the pointing. You will need to apply a primer coat of Resene Concrete Primer then two coats of a solid Resene colour. To only paint the jointing and not the adjacent areas of stone is a challenge and the painted jointing may well stand out and still not blend in with the stone colour.

April 2017

Q. I had my part plaster home painted using Resene X-200. Blisters appeared on about 10% of the area painted some two months after. The membrane has not been breached but it still needs fixing. Please advise what the remedies are.

A. The Resene X-200 membrane will not allow liquid water to pass through the membrane film. If there is blistering that contains water, then this indicates water is getting in behind the membrane and the reason for this needs to be established before repairs are undertaken. The usual cause is flashing details not functioning correctly or cracks within the plaster.

April 2017

Q. My house has a 20 year old brick base with plaster above and has no known leaky home problems. We only broke one blister which was dry. There is a white chalky material on the back of the flake. My question is, do we break the membrane by cutting all blisters and patch them with Resene X-200 or as a further precaution use a form of undercoat before the Resene X-200. Will this restore the membrane?

A. This is indicative of efflorescence occurring, which can only result from water moving through the substrate and bringing dissolved salts to the surface of the substrate where they are then prevented from further passage by the presence of the paint film. The best remedy is to remove all failing areas back to a sound feathered edge and prime the bare substrate with Resene Sureseal. Then spot prime over the areas of Resene Sureseal with a stripe coat of Resene X-200 before applying two full coats of Resene X-200.

April 2017

Q. What product should I use to clean/treat mould off a Butynol deck, prior to painting?

A. For a quick result use Resene Moss & Mould Killer, or if you can wait Resene Deep Clean.

April 2017

Q. Can I use Resene LimeLock over existing paintwork? There is leaching from beneath the existing paint which has been used on a plastered surface.

A. It is highly possible that what you have is efflorescence, and Resene LimeLock was not designed to address this. To fix the issue, you will have to remove the paint from the affected areas and then prime with Resene Sureseal, then topcoat. If it is efflorescence, then this occurs as a result of water migration through the substrate and depositing dissolved salts on the surface. If it is efflorescence then the water source will need to be identified and corrected before repairs to paint work.

April 2017

Q. Am I better to use specific bathroom/kitchen paint in a bathroom areas or is your waterborne Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen good enough?

A. Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen Kitchen & Bathroom will give added mould and anti-bacterial resistance which does not come with the standard Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen paint. However both can be used for bathroom areas.

April 2017

Q. We were planning to paint our deck in Resene Double Pravda. It has an LRV of 23. We were wondering if we should use a CoolColour version of that.

A. Resene CoolColour™ version will reflect more heat, so a definite benefit. The surface will not be cold to touch, but will be cooler than if painted with the standard version of the colour.

April 2017

Q. I am painting the timber railing of a large outdoor deck using Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer and Resene Lumbersider. Due to the size of the deck, it is likely that it will rain at some point before I can complete the job. Is there anything I should do before applying each successive coat to ensure that they adhere correctly? Is rinsing with fresh water and a cloth sufficient if the paint is exposed for less than a week?

A.If you are close to the coast then a daily wash down with fresh water, prior to commencing painting on any given day is recommended. However, there will be no issues with overcoating the primed surface, if left for less than a week before topcoating.

April 2017

Q. We have just renewed some external stairs. They are made of plywood and the stairs will need painting or staining or something. We would like some advice on which way to go. Is there a hard wearing product that would work and is also non-slip? They are used a lot so we obviously don't want to be repainting them every month or so. My husband thought a stain might be a better way to go rather than paint, or maybe there is an industrial sort of product that might be a better idea.

A. There are no semi-transparent (stain) finishes that are slip-resistant trafficable surfaces. Suggest that you prime with 1-2 coats of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat and then apply two coats of Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path.

May 2017

Q. I want to make shaped moulds out of MDF and pour concrete into them to set. What do you recommend I seal the MDF with to stop it swelling while the concrete sets?

A. The only suggestion would be two coats of Resene Armourcote 221 but we cannot guarantee this will give efficient water barrier to avoid MDF seeping.

May 2017

Q. If I use a Resene water-based primer under a Resene two pack epoxy topcoat on a small boat, which I have been told by Resene is compatible; would this significantly reduce the durability of the 2 pack epoxy top coat?

A. As a general rule we recommend 2K primer, 2K topcoat. As long as the 1K primer is compatible with the 2K overcoat there should be no impact upon the durability of the topcoat.

May 2017

Q. Once a Resene two pack epoxy topcoat is fully cured, could I sand small sections of it and apply highlights using enamel paint?

A. Single pack solventborne enamels often do not cure well when applied to epoxies. There are components in most epoxy paints that can impair the curing of the enamel.

May 2017

Q. We want to paint our new weatherboard house by spray painting. What would be the best method, airless or compressor and what is the difference?

A. Airless spray equipment is most commonly used for spray application of waterborne paints. The paints can usually be applied without thinning. However, we do recommend that primers should be brush applied.

May 2017

Q. Do you make a solvent based exterior semi-gloss enamel?

A. Semi-gloss solventborne enamel paints for exterior use are not recommended. They undergo very rapid chalking upon weathering and for this reason are never recommended for exterior use. However Resene Lustacryl which is a waterborne enamel can be used for exterior painting. For interior use we do have a semi-gloss solventborne enamel – Resene Lusta-Glo.

May 2017

Q. I painted a bedroom about a year ago after stripping the wallpaper and using Resene Broadwall Wallboard Sealer. Inside the wardrobe I did not strip the paper or use Resene Broadwall Wallboard Sealer, and just painted one coat of paint over the old wallpaper. There is still a strong paint smell coming from inside the wardrobe. Should I strip the painted paper down to the wall surface and start over or try another coat of paint or is there a better solution?

A. I recommend that you wipe the painted surface down using Resene Moss & Mould Killer diluted and used to label directions then ensure good ventilation for at least a week. It is possible that the odour may be from mould infestation as any paint odours should have long since dissipated.

May 2017

Q. We are ready to paint our new house. We love the interior wooden door frames and skirtings. Do we need to putty nail holes before we varnish them? What would you recommend to keep the wood look?

A. For the highest aesthetic finish use a filler matching the wood colour as closer as possible. I would avoid using a traditional linseed oil based putty if overcoating with a clear varnish. Apply one coat of clear then fill.

May 2017

Q. I would like a high gloss red paint to paint an old camphor box.

A. Resene Super Gloss would be our highest gloss level top coat finish.

May 2017

Q. I need to know if, when I painted my walls with high VOC paint could I have exposed my children to the VOC? The can label says High Gloss Enamel based. It’s all over my dining room walls and it says it’s washable on the can but it doesn’t come off with water, it’s very oily? One of my children experienced a migraine type headache two days after painting.

A. Solventborne enamel paints do contain VOCs but the VOC type and levels can vary with the brand. As long as there is good ventilation in the painted areas the VOCs usually come off the paint and are dissipated to the exterior within seven days. Ventilation is the key to removal of VOCs from a painted room. A one off exposure to these does not normally result in any long term health issues.

May 2017

Q. I am looking to waterblast a timber fence which has old flaking paint, with the intent of repainting. Can you please advise if there is a way to test if this old paint is lead based or not and if it is, what is the safest way to deal with the lead paint?

A. Resene owned ColorShops have a lead testing kit in store. The test can confirm the presence of lead but not quantity or type. If there is an orange red primer layer then this will almost certainly be a lead based primer; these primers were used on many homes for priming timber pre 1970.

If lead is present and you are waterblasting, it is critical to collect all paint debris for disposal. Weed mat placed out from the fence is the best way to achieve recovery but the distance the weed mat extends out to must be far enough to ensure the wet debris will fall onto the weed mat. Roll up the weed mat and place in a large sealed plastic bag for disposal at an approved tip site.

Take care not to expose the timber to high water pressures, as this will result in timber damage and compromise paint adhesion.

May 2017

Q. Having reviewed your technical advice FAQ's on painting new uncoated aluminium flashings over existing timber windows and weatherboards, it seems that for a one pack paint solution the typical advice would be:
First wash down the new uncoated aluminium using Resene Roof and Metal Wash, then apply a primer coat of Resene Galvo-Prime (or Resene Galvo One). Apply two coats of the waterborne topcoat of your choice - probably the same topcoat paint as used on the surrounding house in CoolColour version if available (in our case aluminium window head flashings - so we propose to use the same paint as used on the (non-opening) window frames e.g. in our case Resene Sonyx 101 or Resene Enamacryl - in a white colour). However, in contrast to the above - on a few occasions an extra paint layer appears to be recommended i.e. Resene Quick Dry primer over the Resene Galvo under the two layers of topcoat.

Is this the right process to follow? How much benefit if any - is there in using both Resene Galvo One and Resene Quick Dry, and does it depend on what topcoat is chosen? Are there occasions where some or all of the following would be better for new aluminium flashings? - Resene Roof and Metal Wash, Resene Vinyl Etch primer, Resene Quick Dry.

A. New flashings must be degreased and primed prior to top coating. Resene Quick Dry is often recommended if finishing with dark colours as this gives the maximum heat reflection when Resene CoolColour™ topcoats are used. Two coats of a suitable waterbased topcoat over a primer is fine unless the topcoat colour being used is a dark colour.

Resene Roof and Metal Wash can be used to degrease and clean the metal surface. Resene Vinyl Etch Primer is primarily only an adhesion rather than an anti-corrosive primer. Resene Quick Dry is not recommended direct to metal.

May 2017

Q. Would Resene Lustacryl be suitable for painting pressed metal door frames? The application is residential internal.

A. If new, then yes, but only if the metal surfaces are degreased and then primed with Resene Galvo-Prime.

May 2017

Q. What product do I use to stop oil leaching through the knots in plywood, both natural as a pre-prime in current build and over existing waterbased primed and painted ply where the brown oil stain is coming through?

A. Resene Aluminium Wood Primer is the best primer to hold back staining and resin exudation associated with timber knots. The product must be applied direct to the timber surface and not over a paint finish.

On already painted ply, if staining is the main issue then overcoat stained areas with a coat of Resene StainLock then re-apply the two coats of topcoat colour.

May 2017

Q. Is Resene stain or exterior paint okay to use on concrete paving slabs? If so, which one would be best to use?

A. Resene Woodsman and Resene Woodsman Decking Stain can only be applied to a timber substrate and are not designed for cementitious substrates. We only recommend Resene Concrete Stain for staining concrete pavers.

May 2017

Q. Which component of plaster finishes creates the need for sealer coats to protect the topcoats?

A. Sealers are used to achieve porosity equalisation across the paper and stopped sections. Stoppings based on gypsum or solid plasters will both have a degree of porosity and this is addressed by application of a sealer coat. While the term sealer is not strictly correct it is an easily understood description.

May 2017

Q. I have a cedar house that was stained with a dark brown oil stain, I don’t know what type. I want to paint it but I am concerned that going from dark to light will not have the best finish. Will it show through?

A. A fully pigmented paint system will cover the old stain colour. Scrub down with Resene Timber and Deck Wash diluted and used to label directions. Then apply a full coat of Resene Wood Primer and finish with two coats of any Resene exterior waterborne topcoat paint. If using a dark coloured topcoat, then use the Resene CoolColour™ version of the colour. CoolColours are not cool to touch but reflect more heat than the same colour made using non cool pigments. There remains a degree of risk given that we cannot establish the existing stain type.

May 2017

Q. I have varnished woodwork, window frames, skirting, and doors that I want to paint in waterbased Resene Lustacryl. What is the recommended sealer?

A. Using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner, ensure the surfaces to be painted are clean and free from grease, and pay particular attention to hand contact areas. Apply a thin coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer and allow to cure without water contact for at least 48 hours before overcoating. Then apply two coats of Resene Lustacryl.

The new paint system will take five days to develop good initial adhesion and continue to cure for an additional three weeks until full cure occurs. In the early stages the paint surface will not have good resistance to cleaners or abrasion as these features develop as the film undergoes curing.

May 2017

Q. Is Resene Lustacryl semi-gloss waterborne enamel safe to paint an infant's cot in terms of toxicity?

A. The product is an Environmental Choice Approved paint and contains no heavy metals and is low in VOC (volatile organic content). Allow the paint system to cure for two weeks then wipe down with warm water and a cloth before placing into use.

May 2017

Q. Is it necessary to undercoat over Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer when used on shiny old enamel ceilings and being topcoated in a normal acrylic topcoat?

A. No, but leave the Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer to cure for a couple of days before overcoating with a waterborne paint finish. Note: this only applies to non-wet areas.

May 2017

Q. We have a varnished front door which seems to have black areas on it and very faded areas. I have basically been told by various people simply to sand lightly and paint, but assume there needs to be some sort of sealer coat over the varnish before applying a paint finish. There is some cracking at the foot of the door which I assume will need some sort of filler.

A. The dark areas are typical of what occurs with panel section doors that are exposed to full weathering, water ingress occurs through breaks in sections and is often more pronounced at the bottom of the door. Also if the bottom and side edges of the door are not sealed than water uptake also occurs.

It is difficult to make the sections 100% watertight so a solid paint finish may also have a degree of failure.Treat the door with Resene Moss & Mould Killer diluted and used to label directions. Thoroughly sand the door to remove all loose flaking varnish ensuring edges are sound and feathered back.

Then apply a full coat of Resene Wood Primer, apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat and finish with two coats of either Resene Enamacryl or Resene Lustacryl waterborne enamel. Ensure that the bottom edge and sides of the door are also prepared and painted with the entire paint system.

If this was an interior varnished door and the varnish layer was intact then we recommend Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer as the adhesion primer but this approach cannot be used in your situation.
