Q&A   p. 12

Q. How long should you leave an unventilated room that is has been sealed with pigmented sealer before sleeping in it?

A. You must achieve ventilation of the room so the solvents from the pigmented sealer can be removed to the outside. If you can still smell the solvents then better or longer ventilation is required.

Q. We have a polyurethaned macrocarpa tongue and groove (t & g) ceiling between concrete ribs. The proposal is to paint the timber ceiling white. Will it be necessary to paint with Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer first before using Resene Quick Dry undercoat and then Resene Lustacryl as finishing coats?

A. If the timber is coated with a film forming polyurethane clear then what you propose should work.

September 2015

Q. Can I use swimming pool paint on 100 year old wood outside? I thought it might seal the wood.

A. Resene Swimming Pool Paint can only be applied to a sound cementitious substrate, not wood.

September 2015

Q. I have a new inside window frame that is primed. What sort of undercoat do I use - oil or waterbased? The topcoat on all our windows is a waterbased semi-gloss.

A. If the primer is a pre primer then sand the factory primer and prime with two coats of Resene Quick Dry primer undercoat.

September 2015

Q. With regards to Resene Armourzinc 110 (RA23), can you confirm the durability or time to first maintenance/touch-up? It has been proposed to use this product with a single brush application. It will be applied to repair HDG steel pipe during the construction of the pipe system.

A. Depends upon surface preparation level. Would probably require two brush applications to achieve a DFT of 75 microns. Resene Armourzinc 110 has a 90% zinc content to the dry film and therefore offers great galvanic protection.

September 2015

Q. Can I paint my COLORBOND® fascia white? It is Surfmist in colour now.

A. As long as the COLORBOND® is sound and has been subject to direct weathering for more than a month then the answer is yes. Wash down with Resene Roof and Metal Wash following label directions then apply two coats of a Resene exterior waterborne acrylic white.

September 2015

Q. We are wanting to paint our garage floor with a finish that is not slippery when wet. We will also be driving on it. We are uncertain if the non-slip paving paints are suitable for this purpose.

A. We recommend Resene Aquapoxy for Flooring.

September 2015

Q. I am wanting to specify a Resene paint system for a daycare centre. Could you please help me with what would be a suitable system for over plasterboard that is also 1S and hardwearing?

A. Any paint system that has Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen or Resene Lustacryl as the topcoat would be suitable for this project.

September 2015

Q. I need to paint 17 square metres of plaster on cement block. I've previously used Resene Lumbersider for the topcoats but can't recall what I used as a sealer/undercoat.

A. If weathered use Resene Sureseal as the sealer, if new use Resene LimeLock.

September 2015

Q. I am asking about staining exterior timber wall claddings and whether or not it can deteriorate and the reason for this? Is there any way we can prevent this from happening?

A. Resene exterior wood stains are designed to erode away with weathering. On average the stain will need a maintenance coat every third summer to maintain aesthetics and protection.

September 2015

Q. I have a Vitex deck that is quite weathered. I have cleaned and waterblasted it and am ready to re-stain it. I want a natural look, and don't want a film type finish. Is the Resene Woodsman Decking Stain in 'Natural' suitable? Does it penetrate the timber fully or does it sit on top of the timber so that if it is scraped it exposes bare timber again? If so would I be better going for the Resene Furniture and Decking Oil?

A. Vitex is a timber that is difficult to achieve penetration of stain products. Suggest you use Resene Wood Oil Stain for this application. Our exterior stains are designed to erode upon weathering and the degree of erosion is determined by the weathering intensity. I would not use the Resene Furniture and Decking Oil for this application; the main reason is that the product ends up giving a yellow colour to the decking.

September 2015

Q. Do you have an end grain sealer for hardwood decking?

A. We recommend Resene Wood Primer, which is a pigmented sealer.

September 2015

Q. I have a 1960s property with a Decramastic roof. The Decramastic chips are either weathered or over time have washed away leaving bare iron. Could the roof be restored with Resene Resitex elastomeric textured coating preceded with washing and priming with Resene Galvo-Prime? I would envisage applying Resene Resitex with a Hi-solid roller.

A. Yes you could carry out the system you suggested. Use Resene Galvo-Prime as the primer for bare metal or bitumen then apply Resene Resitex. However Resitex Standard is the only texture that can be roller applied.

September 2015

Q. I'd like some advice about the appropriate use of your products for a project where a paint has already been used which might not be appropriate for the purpose. The job is a new hardwood picket fence. The posts, rails and pickets are of Australian hardwood, mostly ironbark but with some other species too (but no spotted gum, tallowwood or other greasy species). The timber is rough sawn (not dressed) and is well seasoned.

One coat of Resene Enamel Undercoat has been applied to the timber, which prompts me to ask these two questions: 1 - The Data Sheet for Resene Enamel Undercoat says that a primer is required on exterior timber. In this case the undercoat has been applied directly onto the timber. Is this likely to cause a problem? 2 - Can finish coats of Resene Enamacryl be applied over the Resene Enamel Undercoat?

A. For exterior timber we recommend priming with a dedicated wood primer. Our wood primer formulations contain a package of materials to prevent decay of the timber due to moisture and fungi.

Hard Australian timbers such as iron bark may not have the same potential but for a belts and braces approach we would still recommend a wood primer such as Resene Wood Primer be used. The enamel undercoat has no components to address the normal timber decay mechanisms of moisture and fungi.

It is not possible to predict the outcome of direct application of the enamel undercoat but there should be no adhesion issue and you can topcoat with any Resene solventborne or waterborne enamel exterior paint finishes.

September 2015

Q. Do the fluoro paints glow in the dark?

A. The Resene FX Fluoro range are fluoro, not glow in the dark. Fluoros do work at night when you have blacklight (if you have been to glow in the dark mini golf that's what they would use). Glow in the dark is generally only one colour and gives off a greeny white light, rather than a range of colours.

September 2015

Q. I have stripped wallpaper off the laundry walls and want to paint the walls this time. How do I get rid of all the excess paste still on the walls?

A. As hot water as you can bear and a sponge then use a scraper to remove the paste when it swells. Wipe down and then allow to dry and apply a seal coat of Resene Sureseal and a coat of Resene Broadwall Surface Prep and Seal, then the finish coats.

October 2015

Q. I have recently moved into a rental property (4 weeks) and had left a plastic spray and wipe bottle on the toilet window sill where direct sunlight hits. I lifted it up this morning and now there is a perfect outline of the bottle on the paint. The paint on the outlined area has melted and bubbled up.

Not sure what caused it? The heat? The bottle was dry when placed on the sill.

A. The most likely cause is the contents of the Spray and Wipe. Some waterborne paints are softened by the product if it sits on the surface for an extended time.

October 2015

Q. We have macrocarpa weatherboards painted with a tinted varnish. We want to paint over this with Resene Mondo. Some areas are extremely degraded; some are almost perfect. By looking at your other advice on this website I assume we treat with moss and mould killer, sand to get back to bare board for an even feathered finish. Is this correct? What paint system should we use after this?

A. The key requirement is to have a sound base on which to apply a paint system. I would treat areas of moss or mould with Resene Moss & Mould Killer then thoroughly sand back to bare timber. Then prime with Resene Wood Primer and finish with two coats of any Resene exterior acrylic topcoat tinted to the CoolColour™ version of the colour.

October 2015

Q. I am restoring an old caravan and wish to repaint the exterior. It is half fibreglass and half aluminium. What product/s would be best for these surfaces? Ideally I'd like to be able to tint the products to the same colour and sheen. Would that be possible? The original paint has been stripped so we're back to bare. I haven't any experience with 2 pack but I am ready to learn.

A. After complete removal of the existing paint system the new system would be: Prime both substrates with a coat of Resene Armourcote 221 epoxy primer and finish with two coats of Resene Uracryl 400 Series topcoat tinted to your selected colour. Note you can choose between flat, semi-gloss and gloss for the topcoat gloss level. For best long term durability I would recommend you use either Resene Uracryl 402 (semi-gloss) or Resene Uracryl 403 (gloss). For additional durability you can apply a coat of Resene Uracryl UVS Clear in the same gloss level over the tinted Resene Uracryl base colour.

October 2015

Q. I am wanting to clad my house in vertical ship lap cedar. My architect had suggested I get the supplier to coat the cedar with Resene Whitewash. I've heard through a couple of builders that have used whitewash on cedar that the cedar colour bleeds through the whitewash so the cladding needs to be recoated every six months. Have you heard of this issue?

A. Cedar contains tannins and these can bleed through a waterborne paint system. The level of tannin bleed depends upon the timber cut. Flat sawn cedar is more likely to show tannin bleed than quarter sawn. We have had customers use our Resene Waterborne Woodsman Whitewash on cedar with good results. The initial orange undertone due to tannin bleed seems to disappear after a few months of weathering.

October 2015

Q. I am wanting to get chairs reupholstered. I have sanded the timber that will be seen once covered, and am wanting to do a clear coat over the timber to avoid oils etc getting into the timber and so that they will last longer. The chairs will be kept inside. I like the wood as is, and would like to keep it as close to this as possible. Would you please recommend a system for me to use?

A. You can use Resene Aquaclear for this application, three coats.

October 2015

Q. The window sills in our 1957 house are specified as 6" x 2-1/2" Heart Black Pine. The architect's instructions were to 'coat hot lime before painting' so I guess this is something to do with it being Heart Black Pine. Given the above instruction and type of timber I want to know the best type of primer, undercoat and topcoat to use given today's paints. I presume the original paint system was oil based.

A. I have rarely come across this timber by name but in NZ it can also be known as Matai. Given this we would recommend using Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat to prime the bare timber followed by an additional coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat then finish with two coats of Resene Enamacryl or Resene Lustacryl.

Matai contains a powerful anti-oxidant which affects the drying mechanism of traditional solventborne enamels and the use of lime may have been the way at the time to remove the anti-oxidants from the timber surface to ensure the alkyd enamels dried.

October 2015

Q. I have a square garden plot approx 4 feet by 4 feet that I plan to divide into square foot sections using a trellis-like grid that lays on top of the soil. I have come across an old trellis to use but believe it was treated pine originally. Do you have an eco-friendly paint or varnish I can coat the wood in just as a precaution? I'll be growing vegetables in the plot.

A. I suggest Resene Lumbersider; this product is an Environmental Choice approved paint.

October 2015

Q. We have a house painted black with the Resene CoolColour™ system and we want to put the sunblock on it but the paint is showing dirt, pollen and lots of cobwebs. What the best way of cleaning the house before applying the sunscreen?

A. Scrub down using a stiff nylon brush with Resene Paint Prep and Housewash diluted to label directions and then rinse clean with water. By 'sunblock' I assume you mean Resene Clearcoat UVS.

October 2015

Q. I have a building report recommending elastomeric paint on a plaster finish house. Do you supply such a product?

A. Yes we do - Resene X-300E.

October 2015

Q. I have an exterior pergola made of new H3.2 timbers. I have Resene Quick Dry and Rsene Sureseal pigmented sealer. Is it ok to apply two coats of Resene Quick Dry and then two coats of Resene Sonyx 101.

A. Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat is the dedicated wood primer. We would only suggested Resene Sureseal over the Resene Quick Dry if there is any sign of stain bleed.

October 2015

Q. I have a pine deck that I have washed to get the mould off. What product can I use to help the timber? I want a natural colour.

A. Resene Woodsman Decking Stain is the only product we have for this situation. It is available in a number of colours but not as a water white clear.

October 2015

Q. I have a plastic retro light shade that is yellow and want to change the colour to something like your Resene Scrumptious. Is this possible?

A. If the plastic is a PVC type then no issues but it isn't possible for other plastics.

October 2015

Q. I have a decorative exposed concrete driveway which has had oil on it. Turps didn't remove it. Is there something else which is more suitable for this? More importantly I wish to roll a (clear) concrete sealer which will darken it a little, and help mitigate the oil stains. This was applied when new but wore off quickly.

A. The complete removal of oil staining can be challenging especially if the oil has penetrated deep into the substrate. Suggest you try Resene Brush Cleaner on the oil areas. Apply the Resene Brush Cleaner then scrub the area with a stiff nylon brush, leave for five minutes then wash off.

October 2015

Q. Is there a heat resistant paint that can be used on a fire surround? It's been previously painted in acrylic enamel of some sort but is discolouring as well as blistering.

A. The failure of the waterborne enamel paint does suggest that the surface gets too hot to allow painting. Can you maintain hand contact on the surface when the fire is at full heat output?

October 2015

Q. An existing kitchen wall has a gloss laminated board on it. The client wants this painted.

A. You can paint a glossy paint but this will not provide the same features that may have been present with the original surface.

October 2015

Q. I just bought a home that is clad with Western red cedar. The cladding looks old and varies in colour and looks very uneven and gross.

I'm wondering what my options are with trying to create a consistent finish. I'm thinking of staining the cladding and wondering if I can get a consistent aged western red cedar look (a silvery colour)? Or should I just paint it?

A. It is possible to get a consistent stained look but any substrate stained with an exterior Resene stain would require regular maintenance, on average every third summer. Our stains can only be applied over a non-film forming stain and the existing stain cannot be a mineral type stain.

October 2015

Q. Do you stock a food-safe sealer for a polished concrete benchtop? Ideally, heat resistant as well as stain/scratch resistant.

A. Multiple coats if Resene Concrete Wax would meet all requirements other than heat resistance.

October 2015

Q. I had my kitchen cupboards spraypainted, which was great. But I am moving so don't want to spend a lot by spray painting again. What method do you suggest to repaint?

A. To repaint you will need to clean the surfaces down using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner then thoroughly sand to provide a mechanical key for the new paint. Then apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat and finish with two coats of any Resene waterborne enamel in your chosen gloss level. Recommend rolling all coats using a Resene No.4 sleeve. You can get a nook and cranny roller to roll small areas such as cupboard doors. Rolling will give you a more even finish than brushing but a small orange peel to the finish. Brushing will inevitably end up with brush marking.

October 2015

Q. When building my new house I specified to the builder that inside paint finishes should ensure that in wet areas such as kitchen, laundry, toilet and bathrooms the paint finish should be with a washable paint. The whole of the inside walls of the house have been painted with Resene Zyclone Sheen. I questioned this at the time and was told this is a multi-purpose paint suitable for all areas but have now been told that's not correct

What can I do about this?

A. We do not recommend Resene Zylone Sheen for bathrooms or any area where there is a steamy environment. We recommend one of our kitchen and bathroom waterborne enamels for these areas. Wipe the walls down with a sponge and warm water replacing the water often. The wash water should end up remaining clear. Then apply two coats of the waterborne enamel Resene Lustacryl Kitchen & Bathroom (semi-gloss) or Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen Kitchen & Bathroom and leave to dry with ventilation and warmth for at least three days before exposing the newly painted surface to steam.

October 2015

Q. What paint should I use on new Aqualine GIB®, and can the same paint be used on the new wood skirtings and window frames?

A. New Aqualine needs to be primed with Resene Sureseal then you can overcoat with solventborne or waterborne enamel topcoats (Resene Kitchen & Bathroom waterborne enamels).

October 2015

Q. I have just finished a painting using Resene Lumbersider on canvas and I was wondering if this would be suitable to put outside?

A. Resene Lumbersider is suitable for exterior exposure.

October 2015

Q. We would like to paint our fibrous plaster. We have had it sealed and touched up with plaster but it still has minor imperfections. If we line it with a lining paper would the imperfections still show through? I have heard that you have a product that you can roll on to help with this problem. Can you please let me know what it is and how effective it is and also whether you still need to line with paper pre-painting after using this product?

A. You will need to seal the fibrous plaster with Resene Sureseal then roll on one or two coats of Resene Broadwall Surface Prep & Seal. The success of what you are hoping to achieve really depends upon the surface imperfection - the Resene Broadwall Surface Prep & Seal is not a substitute for a plaster skim coat. Resene Broadwall 3 in 1 can be applied in high wet film builds and this would be better product to use but it cannot be applied by a DIY applicator.

October 2015

Q. Can I use paving paint on metal?

A. If you are referring to Resene Walk-on the answer is yes provided the metal is primed with an appropriate Resene metal primer.

October 2015

Q. Is Resene Concrete Stain suitable for staining concrete block retaining walls? Also, does it just stain or stain and seal? That is, can water still penetrate through the stain once cured?

A. Resene Concrete Stain is a stain. It can be applied to any sound cementitious substrate but application to a concrete block wall will not make the wall weathertight.

October 2015

Q. Which is the best paint to use for Clarke pool frame work, lightly rusted? I have used a Resene product before – semi-gloss white - may be a flat white. It will have regular contact with chlorine.

A. Wash down with Resene Roof and Metal Wash diluted and used following label directions. Remove the corrosion using a 3M Rust and Paint Removal Disc then prime with Resene GP Metal Primer then topcoat with Resene Summit Roof (two coats).

October 2015

Q. I am working on a temporary installation. The installation includes Plywood which we want to paint, preferably with grip paint. I see that you have a product which can used on decks and path. Would this work well on plywood and if so would it require any undercoats etc?

A. We recommend Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path applied to ply primed with Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat.

October 2015

Q. I want to repaint the interior of a rental house built in 1950. It has textured wallpaper on all walls and they have been painted. The painter is suggesting skim plastering over the entire walls in each room and then painting. I am uncertain that this will have a good outcome. Do you have any comments or recommendations?

A. Really depends upon the condition of the painted wallpaper and the paint type and how many coats of paint have been applied. If the painted walls are in good condition and painted with an acrylic paint then spray application of Resene Broadwall 3 in 1 would be an alternative to skim coating with a plaster based product.

October 2015

Q. Our house was professionally painted recently with Resene Blackjack and we are putting Resene Clearcoat UVS on ourselves. We are using a paintbrush but are finding it is leaving brushstroke marks from the end of each stroke. Will that go away as it cures or should we use a paint pad?

A. The brushmarking will only disappear as the coating undergoes weathering and gloss reduction. However with the Resene Clearcoat UVS this will not be rapid. Our best suggestion is to add Resene Hot Weather Additive as this will assist in maintaining a wet edge which is why you are seeing brushmarks as the end of each stroke. Also avoid painting in direct sun.

October 2015

Q. I'm looking for a clear coating for Hardiflex® in an exterior situation that will provide equivalent protection to a standard paint system.

A. Assuming we are dealing with new, apply a saturation coat of Resene Solventborne Aquapel then three coats of Resene Concrete Clear. The first coat must be Gloss.

October 2015

Q. What can I use to wipe dirty hand marks off Resene Zylone Sheen? The paint has been on for two years.

A. We recommend Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner.

October 2015

Q. Can I use the Resene X-200 in the fine finish if I put the Resene sealer over it? I am after a slightly textured pale cement look.

A. Resene X-200 is a self finishing product and can be rolled to give a slight textured finish. It doesn't need a sealer over it.

October 2015

Q. Can you please advise me on how to apply Resene Colorwood Whitewash to a surface that has been painted with Danish oil (around a year ago)?

A. Clean the surface and then sand with 220 grit sandpaper to provide a mechanical key for the new paint system. Dust off then roll a coat of the Resene Colorwood Whitewash on. Note it is essential to maintain a wet edge when overlapping so roll from one side to the other and lay off with a 50% overlap. Addition of Resene Hot Weather Additive should be used to assist in maintaining wet edge. You can consider the product to be a clear with a low amount of white colourant added and due to this any overlap may result in differences in opacity which will be seen as whiter lap marks. Alternatively spray apply for the most even lay down of the product.

October 2015

Q. I am about to restore a couple of large MDF audio speakers and wish to finish them with a high gloss black. Currently they have a waterbased acrylic finish which looks awful. I am thinking of a two pot finish which I can buff up. What do you recommend?

A. Apply a seal coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat then Resene Uracryl 403 Black. To increase depth of gloss apply a coat of Uracryl 403 Clear over the tinted Resene Uracryl base colour.

October 2015

Q. What paint can be used to paint a dining table? I would like it to be white, glossy, durable and heat resistant (if possible)?

A. Resene Super Gloss (single pack conversional solventborne enamel) or Resene Uracryl 403 (two pack solventborne enamel). Neither topcoat will give heat resistance to very hot pans with the maximum heat resistance being around 80°C.

October 2015

Q. We are about to paint bedroom walls with Resene Half Athens Grey and paint the trim (window frames, skirting boards etc) with Resene Half Alabaster. I am wondering what paint to buy? We have four children so we need the paint to be easy to clean. The colours are neutral and light but we do want to get a nice contrast effect. We are going to paint the hallway in Resene Half Alabaster. Should we use the same system for this space?

A. I recommend Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen for all areas. The paint takes a month to fully cure and for the first week following application the paint will still be relatively easily marked while it is curing.

October 2015

Q. Can Resene Lustacryl CoolColour waterborne enamel be painted on external metal components? i.e. railings/balustrades/metal fascias etc.

A. Resene Lustacryl can be used for both exterior and interior applications. The CoolColour™ versions really only give benefit when used for exterior applications. Metal substrates will need to be primed with an appropriate system.

October 2015

Q. We have a late 1970s house with exposed timber beams and chipboard ceiling. We would like to paint out both the beams and the ceiling to lighten the place up. The chipboard has some varnish on it (though probably the varnish is 30 years old) while the beams have been stained. The stain may have been applied less than a year ago when the last owners were preparing the house for sale. What products should we use to prepare these surfaces for paint? And then what paint type do you recommend? (We have the colour sorted). Also other than filling the gaps between the chipboard sheets is there anything we need to do to prepare the ceiling or beams prior to application of the preparation product/paint - ie cleaning with particular products, or sanding etc?

A. Apply Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer as a thin coat on the varnished areas and leave to cure for 48 hours then overcoat with two coats of any Resene waterborne interior paint. For the stained beams apply a coat of Resene StainLock then two coats of any Resene waterborne interior paint.

October 2015

Q. We are looking at colours on your charts. The LRV value is shown on back. If the colour we are looking at is available in CC (CoolColour) is the LRV a different value than the one shown on the chart?

A. LRV is a measure of light reflectance only, so no, there is no difference between the LRV of a non and CoolColour™ version of a given colour; however the TSR, total solar reflectance, which is a measure of heat reflectance, is higher for the CoolColour version of a given colour compared to the non-cool version. There is no linear relationship between LRV and TSR.

October 2015

Q. What paint is recommended for Insulclad exteriors? Can the same paint be used on pvc downpipes? The texture is stucco. What is the best way to apply the paint to this surface?

A. Resene X-200 and you can use the same paint for PVC downpipes.

October 2015

Q. Our new house was stained with Resene Waterborne Woodsman which has started to wear off after a couple of years.

A. Resene exterior wood stains are designed to erode from the surface upon weathering, the rate of erosion is depend upon the amount of direct weathering received by the exposed surfaces. Typically the north and western elevations wear away at a faster rate than the other elevations as these elevations receive the mist intense weathering.

On average a maintenance coat will be required every 3 years. If it is weathering a lot faster there may be an issue with the timber. If they have been coated with a mineral oil this can cause problems with stained or painted finishes.

October 2015

Q. What topcoats would you normally recommend on exterior soffits?

A. We recommend Resene Lumbersider low sheen or Resene Sonyx 101 semi-gloss. If a primer is needed you could use Resene Sureseal if there was an old stain that may be subject to bleed or Resene Wood Primer.

October 2015

Q. When building my new house I specified to the builder that inside paint finishes should ensure that in wet areas such as kitchen, laundry, toilet and bathrooms the paint finish should be with a washable paint. The whole of the inside walls of the house has been painted with Resene Zylone Sheen. What can I do about this?

A. We do not recommend Resene Zylone Sheen for bathrooms or any area where there is a steamy environment. We recommend one of our kitchen and bathroom waterborne enamels for these areas. To rectify the situation the following needs to be undertaken, wipe the wells down with a sponge and warm water replacing the water often. The wash water should end up remaining clear. Then apply two coats of the waterborne enamel Resene Lustacryl Kitchen & Bathroom or Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen Kitchen & Bathroom and leave to dry with ventilation and warmth for at least 3 days before exposing the newly painted surface to steam.

October 2015

Q. We have purchased Resene Hi-Glo by mistake instead of Resene Summit Roof which we already have on our roof. Can Resene Hi-Glo go over Resene Summit Roof?

A. Yes Resene Hi-Glo can go over Resene Summit Roof (and vice versa). So you can use the Resene Hi-Glo you have already and then if you wanted to change to Resene Summit Roof you could do so at the next repaint. The difference between the two products is that Resene Hi-Glo is glossier and Resene Summit Roof is a satin finish and direct to substrate on some surfaces. However as you have a coated roof already, the direct to substrate feature is less relevant as the roof is already painted.

October 2015

Q. Our painter has tried applying metallics with a roller but it doesn’t look as smooth as the chart.

A. The colour is a Resene metallic colour, spray application gives the best finish. Our metallic colours are routinely rolled but are more difficult than a standard paint finish.

October 2015

Q. If I get some ghosting of marker pens on my Resene Write-On Wall Paint wall, what should I do?

A. You can use whiteboard spray and a micro fibre cloth.

October 2015

Q. I have just had a brand new house built. However, within a couple of month of living in the house we noticed the bathroom ceiling start to bubble and crack (I would like to point out we have a safety latch on the bathroom window so it stayed open for 90% of the day and even most nights as it was summer). So I rang the building company to advise and they promptly came round and repainted the ceiling, it lasted about 6 months and then started to bubble and crack again. And then the same thing happened 6 months later.

The painter that came to view house blamed it on the paint and poor ventilation with the new 3 in 1 ceiling fans not being strong enough to remove the damp and advised he has a lot of jobs for repainting ceilings due to this. They advised we would need to paint regularly.

A. This is more than likely as a result of not using the correct sealer and possibly topcoat. Our paint systems for wet areas are robust. When there is a flaking issue we always check what is underneath where the paint flakes and what is on the back of the flakes. This allows us to understand why the failure has occurred.

October 2015

Q. We are about to replace our large, wooden garage door and are considering a COLORSTEEL® door or a powdercoated steel door to reduce the weight. The current wooden door is painted with Resene Red Red Red colour but we are unable to get a matching COLORSTEEL® or powdercoat colour. Do Resene have a paint system that we can apply ourselves to over-paint a new COLORSTEEL® or powdercoated steel door in your Resene Red Red Red?

A. If the new COLORSTEEL® door is subject to full weathering for a minimum of a month than you can apply any Resene exterior acrylic paint. But the weathering is the pivotal requirement to achieving paint adhesion.

October 2015

Q. When using pigmented sealer do you have to use undercoat paint after or just paint your walls in choice of colour?

A. Normally you can apply the topcoats directly to the Resene Sureseal pigmented sealer. The only time I would recommend an undercoat such as Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat is for ceilings in bathrooms above showers.

October 2015

Q. Do you have a clear primer to paint glass splashback using a metallic paint as a topcoat?

A. Sorry no Resene product for this application. However you can use Resene Imperite Metallic colours for painting glass splashbacks direct.

Q. Is there a Resene product that would remove old paint from the brick surround of an open fireplace? I want to get it back to the original red brick with grey grout. The wooden mantlepiece fixes down into the top of the brick.

A. Paint stripper would be the only suggestion and stripping paint from bricks back to bare is not easy.

Q. Can I paint external Hardiflex® with Resene Sonyx 101 Wintergrade when the temperature gets 15-17 degrees Celsius? Do I need to add anything to the paint?

A. It’s not recommended to apply the wintergrade formulations at the temperatures you have asked for. They are designed for colder winter conditions.

Q. I am after a polyurethane system to go on a new plywood floor for a sleepout with a bathroom. I have looked at your Resene Polythane and Resene Qristal 1k, just need advice as to which is best for the situation.

A. Resene Polythane (minimum of 3 coats) is the best product to use when there is the possibility of water contact of the clear coated flooring.

Q. Can I paint over a turps based topcoat with acrylic undercoat and then use waterbased enamel?

A. Yes but you will need to sand the enamel basecoat first then apply the Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat.

Q. We have a concrete block wall in our garage that when built was not sealed correctly on the exterior. It only had a coat of paint. Moisture is penetrating the wall and coming inside. What is a solution to seal this wall correctly given the paint is already there? The wall is above ground. The exterior paint was applied direct to the surface, no sealer. My concern is that we need to remove that paint so I am hoping you have a product that can go over the top and achieve an equally good barrier.

A. Test the paint with meths to see if it dissolves or softens. If it does then it is an acrylic paint and after washing down to remove contaminants and surface chalk apply 2 coats of Resene X-200. Also check that the flashings are functional as required and the mortar joints are sound.

Q. When using a waterbased enamel on interior window and door frames, I have had trouble getting a smooth finish without brushstrokes. I have a good quality brush and have learned that you cannot go back over the paint as it goes off really quickly. I have also tried using a small roller, but do not like the finish as much. The woodwork I have been painting has a sealer applied to it first as I am painting out all the natural wood to lighten up the place. The paint also seems to take a few coats to cover the sealer/wood underneath, particularly on the skirtings. Do you have any pointers or advice for me?

A. Brushmarking is unfortunately a negative feature of application of waterborne enamels. This is due to the shorter open time. Open time can be increased by addition of Resene Hot Weather Additive. Also when brushing apply a liberal wet coat, lay off and try to avoid going back over the area.

Q. What paint would you recommend for painting a built in wardrobe and dresser unit, which has been previously stained?

A. Thoroughly sand the stained finish then apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat and finish with two coats of Resene Lustacryl. A roller is the best way to achieve a uniform finish for all coats.
