Q&A   p. 05

Q. Can I paint acrylic paint over limewash?

A. No, you will need to scrub down with Resene Paint Prep and Housewash diluted as per the label, rinse off with copious amounts of water, allow to dry and then seal with Resene Sureseal.

August 2014

Q. I have golden coloured wooden tiles throughout my 1960s home. It really requires a lick of paint but I do not know the extent of the work. I understand the tiles have a polyurethane sealant on them. Does this get removed by a machine of some sort? Can you advise the process for this please?

A. If you want to paint then clean down with Resene Paint Prep and Housewash and sand to provide a profile for the new paint system. Dust off and apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat followed by two coats of Resene Walk-on.

August 2014

Q. What paint should I use to repaint Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path in good condition on concrete? Also what to use to clean existing paint prior to painting?

A. Assuming the existing Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path is sound you can scrub down with Resene Paint Prep and Housewash. Rinse clean and then recoat either with Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path again or Resene Walk-on. The latter will fill some of the Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path profile and reduce slip resistance but may make cleaning easier.

August 2014

Q. I have had planter boxes made of macrocarpa. In the corners of the boxes the builder has used fence posts (100 x 100) to hold the structure together. I want to stain the posts to try and keep the ground retention chemicals from contaminating the soil. Can you suggest a product to use?

A. We recommend you could use two coats of Resene Wood Primer.

August 2014

Q. We have tawa doors right through the house which my husband does not want to paint over. Could you please let me know the best product to blond these doors? We want to get them lighter but still keeping the grain which is quite nice in the doors we have.

A. Our standard recommendation for blonding is to apply Resene Colorwood Rock Salt then overcoat with either Resene Aquaclear or Resene Aquaclear with added Resene Colorwood Enhance White until the blonding intensity is achieved.

August 2014

Q. I'm sure I browsed something on your website about a paint that covers asphalt. My question is, is this a clear coating or a paint finish? The issue is that I run a training facility and my students have splattered paint over the asphalt, thus, it looks rather unsightly.

A. We recommend Resene Blacktop to cover paint spills onto asphalt.

August 2014

Q. Just wondering if the metallic glitter effect in Resene Spark can be used in wet areas (above a shower)?

A. There will always be an element of risk when using a metallic finish above a shower. If this is a repaint then sand down the existing coating and apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat prior to applying the two coats of metallic. The metallic paint will have to be overcoated with two coats of Resene Uracryl GraffitiShield. The metallic needs to be left for at least 48 hours to cure before applying the clear coats, and then after clear coating a further 48 hours. Steam contact cannot occur until the clear coats have cured for the two days and good ventilation and warmth must be maintained at all painting stages.

August 2014

Q. I would like to convert my concrete garage floor to a tennis court surface, to be able to play tennis against a volley board in the garage. The current floor is glossy. Can you please let me know what I need to do to get a 'tennis playing' surface?

A. Prepare the surface by diamond grinding to achieve a surface profile of 180 grit sandpaper. Seal with a coat of Resene Sureseal then apply two coats of Resene Tennis Court Coating. You can also use Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path instead of Resene Tennis Court Coating for this application.

August 2014

Q. I have a problem with the surrounding rubber on the windows as they are perishing and leaking black down the rest of the paintwork. I can't replace the rubbers at this stage… I don't mind that the paint film will crack as the bus is out of the weather. I just need something to go over the rubber.

A. Paint will not address the leaking. Assuming that you only require a small quantity of paint, my only suggestion would be to scrub down with Resene Paint Prep and Housewash diluted to label directions, rinse with clean water and allow to dry then apply two coats of a light Resene testpot colour.

August 2014

Q. I'm after an external gold colour to paint onto CFC. Is Resene Imperite a suitable product and is it available in a gold colour?

A. View the Resene Metallics chart. All colours are available in Resene Enamacryl (waterborne) or Resene Imperite IF 503 (2K solventborne).

September 2014

Q. Can two different Resene CoolColours be boxed (mixed) to form one colour?

A. As long as theResene CoolColours are tinted in the same Resene product than you can mix them.

September 2014

Q. If a door has already been painted for some years with Resene Lustacryl am I able to just fine sand the paint surface and then overcoat using the same paint and colour?

A. Scrub down with Resene Paint Prep and Housewash diluted as per label instructions then sand with 220 grit sandpaper before recoating.

September 2014

Q. Please advise the specific name of the Resene product for painting over Rockcote. We have a very thin (5mm) back finish wall of Rockcote behind a masonry wall which was built 5 years ago and now needs a repaint and obviously want to use the correct paint which I presume needs to be watertight etc.

A. Use Resene X-200.

September 2014

Q. I am repainting an old (1949 made) house's weatherboard exterior and have chosen Resene Vista White as the colour. Being an older house I am tempted to choose Resene Sonyx 101 rather than Resene Hi-Glo. However I am interested as to whether you have any data as to how many years the Resene Hi-Glo would likely outlast the Resene Sonyx 101 on the sunny side of the house?

A. Given the colour you have selected I would see no real benefit in using Resene Hi-Glo and would suggest that Resene Sonyx 101 can be used as there would be little difference in the time to onset of chalking between the two products. The semi-gloss finish is better for older properties as it does assist in disguising weatherboard flaws.

September 2014

Q. Can you use elastomeric Resene X-200 paint in a swimming pool?

A. We do not recommend Resene X-200 for painting swimming pools.

September 2014

Q. I have two Kwila Butler's tables. They have never been oiled by us and are about 15 years old but still quite dark in colour. I want to paint them a chocolate gloss that is nearly black in colour. Can this be done?

A. Wipe down using a cloth wet with Resene Thinner No.2, replacing the cloth often. Allow the solvent to evaporate (otherwise the sandpaper will clog) then sand with 220 grit sandpaper. Hopefully the sandpaper will not clog up which is what we need to see. Allow to dry then apply a coat of Resene Enamel Undercoat followed by two coats of Resene Super Gloss Enamel in your chosen colour.

September 2014

Q. I would like to repaint my dining table. I have kids so will have food and spilt drinks. Is there a specific paint I should use? The table is wooden and I think painted with an exterior dark green paint. It is a little bumpy in places from long term moisture of mugs but other than that it is in great condition.

A. Thoroughly sand using a range of papers starting with 180 grit and then finishing with 220 grit. Apply a coat of Resene Enamel Undercoat followed by two coats of Resene Lusta-Glo. Traditional enamels will give you the hardest wearing finish.

September 2014

Q. My dry erase whiteboard is not working properly. Whatever I write with the whiteboard marker is sticking to it and won't rub off. Can you guide me as to what chemical to use on it?

A. If this is a commercial whiteboard it appears that the surface has been broken down by the solvents used in dry erasable markers. We have found that some budget pens actually behave more like permanent markers and cannot be removed by wiping. In this situation wiping with methylated sprits is the only way to remove inks from the boards. Pen type, board surface and frequency of use determines how erasable pens are.

September 2014

Q. I want to paint my large outdoor concrete table. I understand that I have to clean it with Resene Moss & Mould Killer, then seal with Resene Sureseal, but what topcoat should I use and can I get away with just painting the top of the table?

A. You could use Resene Walk-on as the paint finish, two coats over the Resene Sureseal surface. The product is tough and robust so see no reason why you cannot just paint the top. Ensure that the concrete is dry before you apply the Resene Sureseal. September 2014

Q. I am painting our windowsills etc, and have a coat of waterborne enamel on them. It doesn't seem to have good coverage after two coats. Is it possible to coat on top with an oil based enamel for a smoother finish?

A. If you leave the waterborne enamel for at least 48 hours then you can apply two coats of Resene Super Gloss Enamel. If the colour is a dark colour there may be some dissolution of the waterborne enamel into the first coat of Resene Super Gloss. Waterborne enamels can easily be overspread and this is probably the reason why you have the poor coverage. They also dry much quicker so unless there is a liberal application of wet paint they dry before the paint can undergo flow and levelling.

September 2014

Q. We have enamel radiators and want to change our interior colour scheme. Is there a paint that we can use on the radiators? The radiators are heated with water, not oil.

A. Thoroughly sand, prime any corroded areas with Resene Rust Arrest and then apply two coats of Resene Lusta-Glo. There is no waterborne system for this application and there may well be an odour when the newly painted heaters are fired up so make sure there is good ventilation for the first few weeks.

September 2014

Q. I have a feature brick wall to coat in a clear. What product do you suggest?

A. If the wall is interior (if there is an exterior face the exterior must be weathertight) then you can use Resene Concrete Clear. Apply the gloss first then you can subsequently use reduced gloss levels for the next two coats.

September 2014

Q. We wish to prime the window cutouts in solid (pine) core exterior doors. In the bad old days we would have used pink primer; what is the product of choice now?

A. We still recommend a turps thinned primer – Resene Wood Primer.

September 2014

Q. I have some structural steel beams that have been welded and coated with Resene Steel Fab. What topcoat should I use? The beams will form part of a garage and be interior.

A. It's best to paint over using turps based paints. If there is no corrosion breakthrough then clean down with Resene Paint Prep and Housewash to label/data sheet. Apply a coat of Resene Enamel Undercoat then two coats of a Resene enamel topcoat such as Resene Lusta-Glo.

September 2014

Q. We want to repaint the outside of our villa. It is stucco finish over weatherboards I assume. We are wanting to paint it a dark grey, possibly Resene Cod Grey from your range. Is this advisable? Do dark colours crack on plaster?

A. If a plaster finish is fully cured then this does present a stable substrate. The use of dark colours is not so much related to the plaster layer but the underlying fixings to framing etc. Dark colours will always result in higher surface temperatures which can be reduced using Resene CoolColour™ technology. Most plaster cladding systems do have restriction on the LRV (light reflection value) of paint colours and this is to address the stability of the system. Resene Cod Grey has an LRV of 7 which is well below the value given by plaster cladding suppliers. While LRV is not a measure of heat reflectance the colour would not be considered suitable for painting plaster based cladding systems.

Dark colours applied over an accumulation of light old paint layers can cause the old paint system to fail and this is seen as blistering. This is not related to the substrate.

September 2014

Q. I am proposing to seal and topcoat the top surface only of a cement plastered parapet around a deck. The plaster parapet, which is timber framed, is 1m high x 150mm wide and is coated with acrylic paint. I understand that acrylic paint is not completely waterproof so I need to coat the top (150mm wide and horizontal) surface of the parapet with a product that will make it waterproof.

The plaster surface has a stipple texture and so the horizontal surface tends to hold water. The product would need to bond to the existing acrylic paint (which is in good condition) and have similar flexibility. The product would need to be totally waterproof and have good durability to withstand all the elements.

Could you please advise me as to what product or products to use?

A. The plastered top needs to be re-formed with a 10 degree slope, then Resene Limelock, two coats of Resene Flexicover and finish with one coat of Resene Thixalon.

September 2014

Q. My aluminium windows have faded hugely. I have polished the windows back to their original colour and am wanting to know if there is a clear lacquer available to help keep the colour on the window for longer. The window colour is Grey Friars.

A. You could apply two coats of Resene Uracryl 402 (semi-gloss) or 403 (gloss) Series UVS Clear. Adhesion and compatibility depends upon the surface characteristics.

September 2014

Q. Please advise what prep is required to paint new COLORSTEEL® wall cladding.

A. We always recommend the COLORSTEEL® is left to direct weather for at least 4 weeks before painting.

September 2014

Q. I have an aluminium garage door. It was painted around 8-10 years ago and is in need of a spruce-up. In a few places the aluminium is visible. I can't sand since it is a dimpled sheet, so my question is about preparation and repainting. Does it need priming - and if so with what? I intend to use an acrylic topcoat.

A. Wash down using Resene Paint Prep and Housewash following the label directions, spot prime any bare metal with Resene Galvo One then apply two coats of Resene Summit Roof in the Resene CoolColour™ version of the colour chosen.

September 2014

Q. Do I need to put a primer on my paintable wallpaper? I am using a waterbased paint and the wall is in good condition and the wallpaper is looking good. Thanks.

A. A primer is normally not required, but you will need to apply two coats of topcoat.

September 2014

Q. I am using your metallic effects paint on a shed and have applied a primer of Resene Vinyl Etch before applying the metallic paint. It looks amazing but how long before full curing is achieved? I can see that moisture (condensation) is causing 'streaks' to form even after a minimum drying period of a few hours. Will water/moisture ALWAYS cause damage to the appearance even after the maximum dry time?

A. The issue you describe is surfactant leaching and only occurs when the paint film is not sufficiently cured to resist water or condensation. Touch dry does not mean cure and also the dry times we give are always for a minimum air temperature of 18 degrees C. Assuming the film has dried under the correct conditions the leaching should only occur in the early stages. However you will need to wash the surface down using Resene Paint Prep and Housewash to remove the surfactant from the surface.

September 2014

Q. I would like to paint a wall of my house 'chroma' green so it can be used as a backdrop for photo or video work. Which paint?

A. Resene FilmPro Digital Green gives you a digital green finish. For a 'chroma key' finish you can use Resene Eucalyptus or Resene Japanese Laurel in your choice of flat/low sheen Resene paint.

September 2014

Q. I am looking for a solution for painted benchtops with a clear finish over the top. Thinking Resene Lustacryl with Resene Qristal Clear 1K or 2K over. Or is there a better option? A moderate degree of abrasion resistance would be needed.

A. A better option would be to apply a coat of Resene Uracryl GraffitiShield Clear. Leave the Resene Lustacryl to cure for 48 hours then wipe down with warm water and a cloth rinsing the cloth frequently. When dry apply two coats of the clear coat.

September 2014

Q. I have just had a plasterer fix cracks, holes and joins in my ceiling and walls. He has sanded also. Is there anything else I need to do before painting?

A. You will need to seal the repairs before applying topcoats. If the repairs are stopped then use Resene Broadwall Waterborne Wallboard Sealer for dry areas and Resene Sureseal for wet areas.

September 2014

Q. I have recently purchased a house at the beach with cork tiles on about 60 square metres of the floor area. They are old yellowy brown and I would like to paint them. What variety of paint would you recommend and what would be the best process to do this? The walls are all Resene Alabaster and I would like to paint the floors in a greyish white maybe Resene Double White Pointer.

A. The tiles will need to be thoroughly sanded and then primed with Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat then apply two coats of Resene Walk-on.

September 2014

Q. We are building a house with Shadowclad® board and batten as the cladding. We want a timber stain finish. Can you please tell me what products are suitable for this and what primers etc are required?

A. If it is not bracing then you can use a Resene Woodsman stain.

September 2014

Q. We have a steel spiral staircase currently painted with coloured Resene Uracryl. We want to change its colour. Is it best to clean and repaint in another colour Resene Uracryl or is there a better product? The new colour would be semi-gloss black. The treadplate footing would be painted too and would require some anti-slip properties.

A. As long as there is no corrosion then use Resene Uracryl again as it can be self-recoated without the need for sanding; it just needs to be clean (suggest a scrub down with Resene Paint Prep and Housewash following the label directions). You can add Resene Industrial SRG Grit to the first coat of Resene Uracryl then overcoat with a thin coat of unmodified Resene Uracryl.

September 2014

Q. We have a black stained cedar weatherboard home. We are adding an extension beneath the house (currently a garage and empty space) and we are looking at cladding options for the bottom level. Currently we are thinking brick on the lower level but there is a certain cedar and brick look I see around that I don't want. Our black stain and recycled old bricks may solve this issue but we have also been entertaining the idea of painting the stained cedar weatherboards. Is it easy to paint onto stained weatherboards? We currently have a waterbased charcoal Resene stain on the house. Can we paint directly onto the stain with a primer? Should we even paint the weatherboards, as long term staining may be easier? By painting we could get a whole new look, maybe a white house.

A. As long as the stain is well weathered (however assumes no greying of the timber) you can convert to a solid paint finish using the following: scrub down with Resene Timber and Deck Wash diluted 1:1 with water, leave on for about 5 minutes then wash off with copious amounts of water. Do not let the wash solution dry on the cladding and especially windows and, if possible, avoid contact with the glass. Allow to dry, then apply a coat of Resene Wood Primer and finish with two coats of Resene Lumbersider (if using a dark colour then use the Resene CoolColour™ version of the colour). While staining may be easier there is the need to apply maintenance coats of the stain more regularly than recoating a solid paint finish.

September 2014

Q. We are building a board and batten house and are looking to have the exterior stained with Resene Woodsman. At the moment looking at Resene Jacaranda (but might be a bit too brave for us). We were told that dark colours will void the warranty on ply cladding, but understand that our colour choice can be formulated in a Resene CoolColour. I would like to know if the formulation would change the colour somewhat, and also if the choice of colour and Resene CoolColour formulation would not compromise the integrity of the exterior cladding?

A. While there are Resene CoolColours for stains we cannot derive a true LRV (light reflectance value) or TSR (total solar reflectance value). The LRV limitation placed on claddings always applies to solid colours. Generally for ply if the cladding element is not a bracing element we understand that no LRV colour restriction applies.

September 2014

Q. I own an eleven year old fibro cement house (it is not a leaky home). Each year I paint half the house, the next year the other half etc. I use Resene Lumbersider colour Resene Sisal. I am happy with the result but wonder if there would be any benefit in changing over to Resene X-200 paint.

A. I am not sure why you need to repaint so often as the paint will last much longer. The only benefit you will get by changing to Resene X-200 is greater film build per coat. If there is no weathertight issue then I would continue with Resene Lumbersider.

September 2014

Q. Is it feasible to paint cork floor tiles in a kitchen area? I don't want to stain them but I want to change them to a lighter colour.

A. Degrease them thoroughly, sand, dust off and apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat followed by two coats of Resene Walk-on.

September 2014

Q. When painting white over a darker colour paint, how do I proceed to ensure that it covers satisfactorily?

A. The usual practice is to apply a white undercoat, such as Resene Enamel Undercoat or Resene Acrylic Undercoat.

September 2014

Q. I am using a solid latex stain over an oil primer on my older deck. I have some leftover primer so is there any point in second coating with primer before the solid stain?

A. In general two coats of an appropriate primer will always be beneficial.

September 2014

Q. My bench is a horrible red and a friend said to me I can buy benchtop paint. Do you stock this?

A. Assuming the benchtop is a laminate such as Melteca® then you can change the colour using the following: scrub down using a Jif type cleaner and wipe all residues off, apply a coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer and leave to cure for at least 48 hours. The sealer is not designed to give opacity or film build. Then apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat and finish with two coats of Resene Lustacryl. The system will take at least five days to develop adhesion and hardness. The painted surface will not have the properties of the original laminate and should only be considered as a colour change.

September 2014

Q. Does paint that has lost its pigment due to age still retain the paint's protective properties?

A. Colour can be lost due to U.V. exposure - colour fade (the way to check is to wet the surface and if the original colour returns then it is colour fade) or break down of the paint surface, the latter is seen as chalking. Chalking can result in a reduction of the protective properties of the applied paint film.

September 2014

Q. I am helping my son to paint a newly acquired house. The kitchen has been updated to white cupboards and lovely black granite top. The doors and skirtings are the old wooden (beech colour) and are to be painted to a light cream/white. Can I just sand down and paint with waterborne enamel Resene Lustacryl or do I need an undercoat?

A. We would recommend undercoating with Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat after sanding.

September 2014

Q. Please advise whether there is a floor paint to paint over varnished (polyurethaned) cork tiles and best way to go about it.

A. Clean down using Resene Paint Prep and Housewash to label/data sheet directions. Thoroughly sand with 220 grit sandpaper, dust off and prime with Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat and finish with two coats of Resene Walk-on.

September 2014

Q. I want to paint my old COLORBOND® roof with Resene Summit Roof Metallic Aluminium. Which primer, if any, should I use? And what is the best method of application for this metallic paint - spray or roller?

A. Scrub down with Resene Roof and Metal Wash following the label directions. Prepare flaking or corroded areas using a 3M Rust and Paint Removal Disc (feather back flaked areas to to a sound edge ) and immediately spot prime with Resene Galvo One. Then apply two coats of Resene Summit Roof, best by airless spray.

September 2014

Q. Someone has suggested that I use a soft broom to paint my roof. Do you have any advice as to whether this will work or not? I'm only really worried about the longevity of the paint finish.

A. An old practice, but the concern is that brooming may apply an uneven coat of paint and this will impact upon performance.

September 2014

Q. Do we need to seal Aqualine that has been wallpapered before in the bathroom before resizing and rehanging wallpaper?

A. If you are stripping the old paper then yes, use Resene Sureseal.

September 2014

Q. Can I use your colours to mix with epoxy resin?

A. We do have a series of solventbased tinters that can be used for tinting epoxy paint.

September 2014

Q. I am about to repaint the walls of the kitchen in a home we have recently purchased. Although we intend to renovate part of the kitchen, I really don't like the existing 'putty' colour so will paint it out in the interim. To keep things easy and because I know Resene Black White covers well, I am painting the kitchen in this using Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen. Will I need to use a primer coat to prevent the existing colour showing through - particularly given that there is a large white patch on one wall where a large blackboard used to be?

A. Given that the type of existing paint may be unknown I would sand with 180-220 grit sandpaper than apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat followed by two coats of the new colour.

Q. Why does enamel paint in bathroom and shower have a strong odour after several weeks ventilation?

A. With good ventilation any odour due to solvents should be gone after a week. If the odour lingers open the windows if possible and use a fan or similar to start moving the air around.

September 2014

Q. I have used some Resene paint that was in this house we have just bought and it has left the room smelly three weeks after it was painted. The paint was probably 6+ years old. Can you explain the reason for this? And what can we do about it?

A. Waterborne paint can undergo bacterial growth over time after the can was originally opened and this is the most likely cause. The potential for bacterial growth is a function of storage temperature and if the can was inoculated with bacteria from application equipment or airborne bacterial spores. All you can do now is to wipe the painted surface down with a dilute solution of bleach and then make sure the room is well ventilated.

September 2014

Q. What should I use to prepare and paint cast aluminium external lacework which has some surface corrosion?

A. If the aluminum appears to have been painted and you are seeing under film corrosion - scrub the surfaces with Resene Paint Prep and Housewash. Using a 3M Rust and Paint Removal Disc remove all of the paint and aluminium corrosion products. Dust off and immediately prime bare aluminum with Resene Galvo One and then apply two coats of Resene Lumbersider.

September 2014

Q. We are getting retrofit double glazed windows installed. They will be cedar. The joiner is painting with Resene Wood Primer (brushed on) before leaving the storeroom. I wish to paint them as soon as they are installed. On previous windows we have finished with Resene Lustacryl. I plan to apply the Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat over the Resene Wood Primer as the Resene Lustacryl information sheet says this provides a good surface for the Resene Lustacryl. Does this sound like the right procedure? Should I also do an extra coat of the Resene Wood Primer before Resene Quick Dry undercoat (to ensure a good primer layer so tannins don't leach)?

A. Your suggestions are in line with our recommendations.

September 2014

Q. I have repaired our ring foundation wall and replaced vents. Now it's time for a lick of paint and scraping back old paint etc. till clean dry surface. Once done is there any particular paint we should use?

A. Given there are no weathertightness issues, prime with Resene Concrete Primer and apply two coats of Resene Lumbersider (low sheen) or Resene Sonyx 101 (semi-gloss).

September 2014

Q. Am I able to get the same colour paint with one as a normal room paint and the other as a child safe bedroom paint?

A. Almost all of our waterborne paints are Environmental Choice approved so there is no reason to use a separate paint for children's bedrooms as opposed to other rooms within a house.

September 2014

Q. I want to paint over varnish - my kitchen is large and almost entirely varnished wood (a bit like a Lockwood home) including the ceiling! If I have to sand it all it will be a huge job. Iis there any alternative or primer I can use directly over 30 year old varnish?

A. Clean the surfaces down using Resene Interior Paint Cleaner Concentrate diluted and applied following the label instructions. Allow to dry then apply a coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer and leave to cure with good ventilation for at least 48 hours. Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer is not designed to give hiding or a high build. Apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat followed by two coats of a Resene waterborne enamel. I suggest Resene Spacecote Low Sheen for walls and Resene SpaceCote Flat for ceilings. The paint system will require at least five days to develop adhesion and avoid contact with steam for the first 5 days.

September 2014

Q. After staining a wood deck with an oil based stain can the deck be overcoat with any other product to provide longer life?

A. No, a penetrating wood stain is not designed for overcoating with another product.

September 2014

Q. I would like to paint over outdoor ceramic glazed tiles that are fully exposed to rain. What can be done?

A. Our standard spec for glazed tiles is to clean down using Resene Paint Prep and Housewash and then apply an adhesion coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer. Leave the Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer to cure for a minimum of 48 hours then apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat and finish with two coats of Resene Walk-on. The system will take up to 5 days to achieve sufficient cure to withstand foot traffic. The paint finish will not have the wear properties of the original tile finish.

September 2014

Q. I'm looking to recoat my iron roof. I note some professional firms use elastomeric paint. Do you have anything like this?

A. Elastomeric paints are best applied to cementitious substrates with a history of cracking. We are aware of the use of this type of generic coating for roofing but do not position our product Resene Flexicover E for metal substrates. We recommend using Resene Summit Roof paint.

September 2014

Q. Is it ok to use the waterbased sealer undercoat (the stuff you use on new plasterboard) on wallpaper?

A. Waterbased sealers used for new plasterboard will not block sold stains from migrating through a new waterborne topcoat system. They will also not seal off plasticizer migration from a vinyl wallpaper which can cause the waterborne topcoats to remain soft and tacky.

September 2014

Q. I have some new powdercoated steel cabinets. I wish to paint over them. Can you advise treatment?

A. Apply Resene Vinyl Etch as the adhesion primer then follow with a Resene Uracryl 400 series tinted topcoat.

September 2014

Q. Having trouble painting over a wall after I removed wallpaper. The old sizing is causing the paint to bubble.

A. We recommend application of Resene Sureseal pigmented sealer after stripping off the paper as this prevents the issue you describe.

September 2014

Q. I have a roughcast house with cement plaster architraves around the outside of the windows and doors. The plaster has hairline cracks in the top corners. I have a can of Resene Sureseal pigmented sealer. Would this be suitable to seal the cracks prior to repainting? The existing paint finish is in excellent condition.

A. Resene Sureseal will not fill or bridge cracks. It is best to brush on at least two coats of Resene X-200 hi build acrylic membrane.

October 2014

Q. I have a 1927 bungalow with cedar sashes. I have sanded them and in some places it is back to bare wood. Do I need to use a solvent based primer or is cedar bleeding no longer a concern due to the age?

A. You still need to use Resene Wood Primer to prime bare cedar.

October 2014

Q. Do the testpots of colour come in acrylic oil and watercolor?

A. Most of the testpots are low sheen waterborne (acrylic) paint. We do have some waterborne stains and some metallics also (both waterbased).

October 2014

Q. On interior plywood that is stained what Resene product would you use for the topcoat?

A. For a waterborne clear varnish, 3-4 coats of Resene Aquaclear.

October 2014

Q. What paint product can you suggest that is resistant to solvents such as petrol for use on a workshop floor?

A. We have used Resene Aquapoxy for Flooring for this type of application.

October 2014

Q. What is best to apply to all the Beech (raw) wood bench surfaces in a kitchen area? Satin finish is our first preference to cut back surface glare.

A. Suggest that you apply a pretreatment of Resene TimberLock (ensure any excess is wiped from the surface), allow to dry for at least 48 hours then follow with 3-4 coats of Resene HD Poly-Satin varnish.

October 2014

Q. I seek your advice on how can I repaint four huge wooden doors in front of the temple hall. The doors look like they are painted with Resene Qristal Clear Poly-Gloss. Has a yellow look/shining. Condition is still reasonably good. Can I just paint over the current varnish without having to sand?

A. If you want to repaint using a solid colour then clean down using Resene Paint Prep and Housewash following label/data sheet directions. Lightly sand the dust off and apply a coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer (note the product is thin and not designed to give high film build or opacity). Leave the Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer to cure for 48 hours ensuring good ventilation then apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry Waterborne Primer Undercoat followed by two coats of Resene Lustacryl waterborne enamel. For best results roller apply the Resene Quick Dry and Resene Lustacryl.

October 2014

Q. I'm redecorating interior rooms. I have had to spot repair walls using GIB®stop compound. I want to use a paint to seal the stopping and act as an undercoat over the entire wall. Would you please advise the best product?

A. We recommend Resene Broadwall Surface Prep and Seal.

October 2014

Q. Could you please advise me on what is the best paint for anaglypta wallpaper?

A. Any quality interior wall paint such as Resene Zylone Sheen or Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen.

October 2014

Q. When visiting overseas I saw a colour chart with a colour I like. I usually buy Resene but really like this colour. Could you please advise if I can get it made up at a Resene ColorShop? I also have a paint chart with it on.

A. If you can drop the colour card off at your nearest Resene owned ColorShop and advise which colour you want matched the card can be sent to our Color Lab for matching. Please ensure you leave contact details for ColorShop staff to contact you when the match is completed.

October 2014

Q. I am trying to find the light reflectance value for Resene Riverstone (Woodsman stain on pine). Required to satisfy resource consent requirements. I need a colour that is less than 35%. I would like something quite light and Resene Riverstone was my choice for staining Shadowclad®.

A. Despite the 'belief' that has endured for many years an LRV value can only be measured for a solid colour, not a semi-transparent stain such as Resene Woodsman. The closest Resene solid colour to Resene Riverstone is Resene Stonehenge which has an LRV of 29.

October 2014

Q. We have the Resene Blackboard Paint on one of our boys wardrobe doors. We're wanting to paint over it. Can we paint straight over it with the wall paint or do we need something underneath first?

A. As long as the Resene Blackboard Paint is chalk dust free then you can apply any Resene waterborne wall paint.

October 2014

Q. I have a steel gate which I have cleaned up and primed with Resene Rust-Arrest. For a topcoat can I use Resene roof paint? I have plenty of Resene Hi-Glo or do I need something else?

A. You can use Resene Hi-Glo for the topcoats as long as it is applied to the base metal primed with Resene Rust-Arrest.

October 2014

Q. I am wanting to paint our old fence. There are rust stains in the fence from the rusty old nails. Can you recommend a product to put over the rust so that it does not show through when we put the topcoat on? I was going to topcoat with Resene Lumbersider.

A. Wire brush the nail heads to remove as much loose rust as possible, then spot prime the rusted nail heads and stains with Resene Rust-Arrest using a small brush. Allow to dry for 24 hours and repeat the application of the Resene Rust-Arrest. Allow to dry for a further 24 hours then apply two coats of Resene Lumbersider.

October 2014

Q. When I'm using Resene enamels, exterior, painting over a white undercoat I have great difficulty working the first layer of paint so that the white doesn't show through. I think I use plenty of paint but when I brush it out the undercoat shows through. Thoughts and advice?

A. When brushing it is very difficult to achieve a uniform wet film thickness and what I think you are seeing are variations in wet paint film thickness. We recommend application of two coats of tinted topcoat to ensure topcoat uniformity. Once you apply a second coat it should even out the paint film.

October 2014

Q. Is there a trick to painting around aluminium joinery? I have masked it (which in itself is a very tricky task on smallish windows) but it always looks terrible because some paint inevitably gets on the frame, which I can scrape off afterwards, but it also seeps into the gap. Can I avoid this happening somehow or make it easier?

A. Masking is the only way to really avoid the issue or use a small speed brush.

October 2014

Q. What is the best paint for an aluminium caravan?

A. If bare then degrease and prime with Resene Armourcote 220 and finish with a Resene Uracryl 400 Series topcoat.

October 2014

Q. I have internal doors, door frames and skirting boards that were stained and polyurethaned years ago. I now want to paint over them, so do I need to use a sealer or do I have to strip the surface first?

A. Clean the areas down with Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner diluted and used to label. Then lightly sand, dust off and apply a coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer (not designed to give opacity or film build) and leave to cure for 48 hours with good ventilation. Apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry Waterborne Primer Undercoat then you can topcoat with either a waterborne or conventional solventborne enamel.

October 2014

Q. We bought a new house that has brown beams, but we want them white. What paints do I need to do this please?

A. The beams are probably stained. Seal the existing colour using Resene StainLock then apply two coats of any Resene interior waterborne paint to suit your gloss level.

October 2014

Q. I am painting a laundry, bathroom and bedroom. I purchased paint through Resene but just want to double check that the Resene Sureseal pigmented sealer that I was supplied is going to be sufficient. The brand new GIB® and plaster has just been done. This is just for the undercoat or should I be using something else?

A. For new Aqualine® for wet areas Resene Sureseal is the correct sealer. Coverage can vary but typically is 14-16 square metres per litre. You can calculate the areas by multiplying the length (width) by the height of each wall in each room then adding it up to get the total area.

October 2014

Q. Do the testpots in colour come in acrylic oil and watercolour?

A. Most of the testpots are low sheen waterborne (acrylic) paint. We do have some waterborne stains and some metallics also (both waterbased).

October 2014

Q. I was planning to make a smoker using terracotta pots and then painting them. Will this work?

A. You can only paint things if you can maintain constant hand contact at the hottest time. If you can't do that then we don't recommend painting it. Normally for terracotta we recommend sealing inside and out. If not sealed inside then the moisture off the cooking will come through the terracotta and bubble off the outside paint.

October 2014

Q. Is it possible to use Resene Blackboard Paint as the topcoat over the top of the magnetic base coating? That way we can have a magnetic blackboard.

A. Yes this is possible. You just need to make sure the Resene Magnetic Magic is on nice and thick. We recommend you test your magnets on the surface to check they are holding on well before you topcoat. If you find they are not holding on as well as you would like, either apply more Resene Magnetic Magic and/or use stronger magnets.

October 2014

Q. I am quoting to paint a mural on a 15m wooden weathered fence. Please advise what undercoat you think would be suitable (the fence is quite porous) and then what paints to paint the actual pictures with? I normally paint watercolours on paper!

A. Scrub down using Resene Timber and Deck Wash following the label/data sheet directions then apply a coat of Resene Wood Primer. For coloured topcoats suggest you use Resene Lumbersider.

October 2014

Q. I decided to paint a trim on my outside non slip matt tiles. I made the mistake of not priming first. Now some paint has peeled off and more is sure to come. Can I now prime them and repaint over them? Not sure if primer can go on a painted tile?

A. Our standard system for glazed tiles is to prime with Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer (note this is an adhesion primer and not designed to give film build or opacity), leave to cure for 48 hours. Then apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry Waterborne Primer Undercoat and finish with two coats of a Resene waterborne enamel. Adhesion development will take a minimum of five days. The system can only be applied direct to the tile surface not over a painted surface so you would need to remove the existing paint first.

October 2014

Q. We have a weatherboard and plaster home. The paint is now 7 years old. How do I know when a repaint will be required?

A. The usual triggers are flaking areas or onset of severe chalking. Wipe the paint surface with a cloth of a contrasting colour to the paint and see if there is a white deposit on the cloth. If there is then this indicates surface chalking and the possible need for a repaint.

October 2014

Q. We have removed wallpaper and sanded the wall down to the plasterboard. I have applied Resene Sureseal and am now going to apply Resene Broadwall Surface Prep & Seal. Should I have done it the other way around?

A. We recommend Resene Sureseal then Resene Broadwall Surface Prep & Seal. For dry areas you can apply Resene interior wall paints to the surface painted with Resene Broadwall Surface Prep & Seal without the need for another application of Resene Sureseal.

October 2014

Q. I recently browsed looking for some type of sealer (undercoat) for a concrete tile roof. It must be sprayable with good bonding with a topcoat. The existing concrete tile topcoat has weathered away.

A. We specify Resene Sureseal as the primer/sealer for bare, old and weathered cementitious surfaces followed by two coats of Resene Hi-Glo or Resene Summit Roof.

October 2014

Q. Can you please tell me the 'shelf life' of acrylic paint if unopened?

A. Depends upon storage conditions. The cooler the storage conditions the better. Waterborne paints are susceptible to bacterial breakdown. We add in can preservatives to control this but the effectiveness of these is related to storage conditions. Paint will also undergo settling over time but can usually be reincorporated with stirring to restore the original properties.

October 2014

Q. I have a renovated bathroom/shower room where the walls and ceiling are a mixture of bare plaster, bare plasterboard and previously painted surfaces (probably acrylic paint). I have purchased Resene Sureseal to use as the first coat and Resene SpaceCote for the finish coats, but I wanted to check first that the Resene Sureseal is a suitable undercoat on the surfaces which have been previously painted?

A. Resene Sureseal is not normally used as an undercoat over previously painted surfaces. In your case I would apply the Resene Sureseal where required, sand the existing painted areas then apply a full coat of Resene Quick Dry Waterborne Primer Undercoat to the entire area before applying the two coats of waterborne enamel.

October 2014

Q. For ply cladding in a coastal environment what would be the expected 'recoating times' for stain versus paint?

A. Typically stains will require a maintenance coat every 2-3 years whereas paint will require a maintenance coat at 8-10 years. However the times are very dependent upon exposure and in the case of pigmented finishes the gloss level used.

October 2014

Q. My daughter wants to repaint her baby cot. What is your recommendation for a safe paint, i.e. one that can be gnawed etc?

A. We recommend using Resene Quick Dry Waterborne Primer Undercoat for priming bare timber and two coats of Resene Lustacryl as the topcoat. Leave to cure for at least two weeks with good ventilation then wipe down with a cloth and warm water before using. Both products are Environmental Choice approved.

October 2014

Q. Is there any benefit to applying Resene Clearcoat UVS over dark greys?

A. While giving UV protection to minimise UV induced colour change is the main selling feature of the product it also does give a clear layer on top of a pigmented basecoat which does protect the pigmented base paint from weathering.

October 2014

Q. If I am applying Resene Cemseal or the like can I apply it with a knapsack sprayer and if not why not?

A. Yes, see no reason why you could not apply Resene Cemseal using a knapsack sprayer.

October 2014

Q. What should I use on a concrete patio of schist rock in mix (porous) to give a wet look?

A. If the patio requires sealing to prevent water ingress then we have no product that can deliver this requirement but if you want a clear to give a wet look apply multiple coats of Resene Concrete Clear Gloss.

October 2014

Q. What paint would you use to paint on Perspex for a garden feature? I was thinking of a kind of screen, or garden artwork.

A. Any Resene exterior acrylic is OK (e.g. Resene Lumbersider, Resene Sonyx etc). It will take a few days for adhesion to fully develop.

October 2014

Q. I have a very bad wall finish on a very old house. Just tried a feature wall but it showed every flaw. I want to use a polystyrene gauze type wall liner and repaint over. What product do you suggest?

A. Try the Surtech system.

October 2014

Q. I plan to restain my bedroom furniture. I have tested various Resene Colorwood and Resene Woodsman sample pots on some scrap Victorian ash and pine but it seems I need to apply at least five coats in order to obtain a dark colour. I suspect I am using too fine a sand paper. I am using a 120 and then 240. Could you please tell me what grit you recommend? My bedroom furniture has a clear varnish that seems to be a semi-gloss on top and a satin on the drawer.

A. The only stain we recommend for interior staining is Resene Colorwood, not Resene Woodsman. For Resene Colorwood to stain the timber you have to have bare timber, that is no varnish layer. Complete removal of the varnish may well be difficult unless you look to use a paint and varnish stripper first, then sand after removal of the varnish layers.

October 2014

Q. We're building a new weatherboard home and I want to paint it Resene Stack. My question is whether this grey colour is too dark to paint normal weatherboards?

A. To get a guarantee, suppliers of timber weatherboards place a limit on the LRV of colours, usually a minimum LRV of 40 or 45%. This is to ensure that dimensional changes in the boards due to heat are minimised.

The LRV of Resene Stack is 34 which is below either of the standard LRV cut off values. LRV is not a measure of heat reflected by a colour, the correct measurement is TSR (total solar reflectance). We have derived a correlation between LRV and TSR that can allow the use of colours with an LRV below the cut off values by using Resene CoolColour™ technology. For an LRV cut off of 40 the TSR of the colours must be greater than 36%. In the case of Stack the non-Cool version of the colour has a TSR of 26.5 with this increasing to 45.6 for the CoolColour version. Note that the LRV of the non and cool versions of a colour are the same. All TSR measurements are measured after application of two coats of topcoat over a white base coat. So if you are limited to an LRV cutoff of 40 you can use the Resene CoolColour version of Resene Stack.

October 2014

Q. We have purchased a home and one of the rooms (which is now a kid's bedroom) was used as the 'smoking room'. The room was painted before we bought the house, but now the smell is coming out and the yellow staining on the ceiling especially, and the walls, is coming out. What is the best sealer to use for the walls and ceiling that will stop the smell and stains re-appearing before we repaint the room?

A. Wash the walls and ceiling down using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner, sand with 220 grit sandpaper dust off and then apply a seal coat of Resene StainLock. This will stop smoke stains from leaching into a new paint system. Cannot offer any guarantee re the odour however.

October 2014

Q. I have three newly built outdoor wooden structures I want to stain/paint. Following a brief conversation I am wondering if I need to leave any of these to weather. The items to be stained/painted are: (1) New deck built with treated premium radiata pine to be stained; (2) new front fence constructed from treated premium radiata pine to be painted; (3) new standard timber fence (wider boards, timber with a roughish surface) to be stained. Would appreciate advice on whether any of these can be tackled straight away or whether I need to wait.

A. The recommendation to leave decking timber to weather really only applies to hardwood timbers such as Kwila as the timber surface needs to open up to get better stain acceptance. You could start to stain or paint now; painting with a solid paint finish should be undertaken as soon as possible to avoid UV damage to the timber surface.

October 2014

Q. Our project is using Resene Lumbersider CoolColour on a number of exterior timber walls. Can you please advise what if any maintenance is required on this paint, what the life expectancy is, how to identify when the paint needs replacement, and a replacement methodology?

A. An annual wash down using Resene Paint Prep and Housewash. Re durability the only issue will be the onset of chalking (if surface prep is correctly done there will be no issues with film integrity); the time will vary with exposure but typically is more than 5 years. You can check for chalking by wiping with a cloth of contrasting colour - if there is significant amounts of white material coming from the surface then this is the trigger for re-application of an additional coat. A single coat only should be needed if remaining with the same colour.

October 2014

Q. I have an un-opened container of Resene Woodsman Oil that is a few years old. Is this still OK to use and can you thin it down?

A. Ensure that you thoroughly stir the can contents as the pigments will have settled. When this is done the product should be good to go.

October 2014

Q. I have a timber built conservatory finished in an exterior gloss white paint. My problem is that flies defecate on the paint leaving stubborn dark stains that only a cream cleaner will remove and only then if cleaned after a minimum of delay. Do any of your paints offer resistance to this menace?

A. Only suggestion would be to upgrade to a 2 pack polyurethane gloss that would make cleaning easier. You would need to clean down the existing paint coating, assuming it is sound, then apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry Waterborne Primer Undercoat followed by 3 coats of Resene Uracryl 403 Gloss.

October 2014

Q. Can I paint with an oil based semi-gloss (Resene Lusta-Glo) over existing Resene Lustacryl used on skirtings and door frames?

A. Yes, as long as the Resene Lustacryl is well cured after a sand to provide a key for the new paint.

October 2014

Q. I have a villa with timber ceilings. My initial response was to paint them out as the timber is very very orange. However is it possible to remove the orangeness?

A. The colour is more than likely due to old varnish and there is no way to bleach the colour from an old varnish layer.

October 2014

Q. We are repainting the exterior of our house. It is weatherboard which we have stripped and have used an enamel primer. We are planning to use Resene Sonyx 101 on the weatherboards. My question is what type of paint should we use on the exterior windows (also timber and have been stripped and primed with enamel)?

A. You can use Resene Super Gloss (solventborne) or Resene Enamacryl (waterborne gloss) or Resene Lustacryl (waterborne semi-gloss) as the topcoat system. The gloss level of Resene Super Gloss is higher than Resene Emanacryl but drops off quicker than Resene Enamacryl.

October 2014

Q. Started scraping outdoor painted deck. I have much of it done but ran into autumn. Can I put on a waterproofing coat then clean and paint in spring?

A. Most decking stains are non-film forming and are formatted to erode off the surface. I would recommend that the deck preparation include a treatment for any mould/algae and moss along with removal of flaking paint then apply a primer compatible with the decking timber. Our primers can be left untopcoated for a few months and topcoats can be applied at a later stage.

October 2014

Q. I have been advised that Multishield+ is a suitable product to apply over wallpaper as added protection in a bathroom; however I have been advised by the local Resene ColorShop that this is no longer available and Resene Concrete Clear has replaced this.

Could you please confirm that the Resene Concrete Clear would be a suitable replacement for applying over wallpaper?

A. The application of Resene Multishield+ to wallpapers is historic and predates the wide spread availability of vinyl coated wallpapers. Application of acrylic coatings such as Resene Multishield+ to vinyl wallpapers can result in the extraction of plasticisers from the vinyl into the clear, which gives a soft tacky surface. For this reason we have removed this from the data sheet for Resene Concrete Clear. Our wallpaper supplier advises us that selection of a solid vinyl paper should be made for papers used in bathrooms and the like.

October 2014

Q. We are building a container home and would just like some advice on the best colour to paint. Our main concern is overheating in summer. We are looking at your CoolColours, but any colour specific advice you could give?

A. White has the highest solar reflectance value of any colour, black the lowest. Resene CoolColour™ technology does not render the surface cold to touch but when compared to the non-cool version of a colour the CoolColour has a higher TSR (total solar reflectance) value. To the best of my knowledge there is no restriction on colours for this type of construction and I assume that the container walls will be fully insulated.

October 2014

Q. I have a second bathroom that has blue tiles on the walls. I would like to know what to use to paint over these to make them white?

A. Clean down with Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner and apply a coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer and leave to cure for at least 48 hours with good ventilation (note this is a thin film adhesion primer and not designed to give opacity).

Then apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat followed by two coats of Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen Kitchen & Bathroom. At least 48 hours cure is required again with good ventilation before reusing the bathroom. Note that the painting system will not have the original properties of the tiles.

October 2014

Q. I'm painting my bathroom. Do I need to put a sealer over the old paint after a sand before applying the semi-gloss?

A. If the existing paint is sanded there is no need to apply a sealer to sound existing paint but depending upon the existing paint and what will be used as the new paint we may recommend application of an undercoat.

October 2014

Q. I want to paint wooden Lockwood walls that don't look good. I am thinking something apricot/yellow like a half or even Resene Quarter Moonbeam. But I don't want a 'flat' colour. We did add a sky light to the lounge and it has made it brighter, but I don't know how to cover up the wood.

A. Degrease with Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner following the label directions, then apply a coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer and leave for 48 hours to cure ensuring good ventilation. Then apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat followed by two coats of Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen tinted to your chosen colour

Note that the Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer is not designed to give film build or opacity. The development of adhesion of the entire paint system will require a minimum of five days to develop.

October 2014

Q. Does Resene have a product to recoat a faded, coloured stamped driveway?

A. Yes, Resene Concrete Stain, available in a range of colours, which you can view on the Resene Decks, Driveways and Recreational Areas colour chart.

October 2014

Q. My house was painted with an exterior rubberised paint. It's starting to crack and so I want to repair and repaint but I don't know what paint I should use.

A. My recommendation is to completely remove the paint back to bare substrate as I am unaware of any paint that could be considered to apply over the paint with the defects you describe.

October 2014

Q. I'm searching for a non-toxic concrete floor paint for my home, including children's bedroom, bathroom and the shower tray. I believe all of these demand different specs, but I'm totally unaware of what to use.

A. Use Resene Walk-on applied to the appropriate level of surface preparation. This is suitable for the bedroom and bathroom but not the shower tray.

October 2014

Q. What is the correct paint to use on Scyon/LINEA® weatherboard?

A. For new, wash down using Resene Paint Prep and Housewash following label directions. Apply a primer coat of Resene Concrete Primer followed by two coats of Resene Sonyx 101 (semi-gloss) or Resene Lumbersider (low sheen).

October 2014

Q. What causes paint to peel from a lounge ceiling?

A. There are a couple of possibilities but the most common is water getting behind the applied paint or the wrong sealer was used. Where there is loss of adhesion what is revealed where the paint flakes off and what is on the back of the paint flakes? Also check if the back of the paint flakes are powdery.

October 2014

Q. I have applied a testpot of Resene Waterborne Woodsman exterior stain onto a patch of grooved side up pine decking timber. Paint has been removed from the timber before applying the stain. It is still not completely dry after 48 hours, though is touch dry.

A. Resene Waterborne Woodsman retains a surface tack until the stain has weathered for a time; the stain is dry but what you are seeing is the residual surface tack.

October 2014

Q. I am wanting to paint the fabric of a chair and have been recommended latex paint.

A. Latex is a term now replaced by waterborne. You can use Resene Lumbersider for this but we cannot guarantee that the paint on the fabric will not crack when stressed.

October 2014

Q. We have outside decks and we normally stain these decks yearly using your Resene Kwila Timber stain. Can we use your Resene Woodsman penetrating oil stain over this Resene Kwila Timber Stain.

A. Scrub down the decks using Resene Timber and Deck Wash following label directions then allow to dry and you can then apply Resene Woodsman Wood Oil Stain or Resene Woodsman Decking Stain.

October 2014

Q. Can I use Resene Lustacryl waterborne semi-gloss enamel over Resene Enamel Undercoat?

A. You will need to sand the solventborne enamel then apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat then the two coats of Resene Lustacryl for best results.

October 2014

Q. I am wanting to repaint my ceiling in two rooms and the bathroom. There was some leaking a few years ago which we have fixed. An HRV system dried everything out and cracked all the ceiling paint. The surface isn't plasterboard. We are wanting to know what we can do to fill in the areas where thick chunks of paint have peeled off to make it smooth again, and then what products we need to use to paint our ceilings.

A. If the ceiling is not plasterboard then it is probably fibrous plaster. The flaked areas will need to be scraped back to a sound edge then the ceiling skim coated with a gypsum plaster compound. To restore the ceiling, this is best undertaken by a professional stopper. The remaining sound paint will need to be sanded with 180 grit sandpaper to provide a mechanical key for the new paint system.

Before painting any new gypsum and any old bare fibrous plaster will need to be sealed with Resene Sureseal before applying two coats of new ceiling paint.

October 2014

Q. What paint should I use for undercoating and painting the interior of our caravan? It needs to be able to cover stains. Most of the stains are very old water stains.

A. Wash down all surfaces to be painted with Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner following label directions. Sand the existing paint to provide a key for subsequent coats. If the walls are oil tempered hardboard you will need to prime bare areas with Resene Sureseal. Also apply the Resene Sureseal to areas of staining. Then apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat to all areas followed by two coats of a Resene waterborne enamel such as Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen. Ensure the interior is well ventilated to facilitate curing of the Resene SpaceCote.

October 2014

Q. Is it ok to paint over a deck made out of treated (CCA) pine? The deck is new and I would like to paint it black.

A. Painting timber black always carries the risk of warping or cupping occurring. Resene CoolColour™ technology can reduce but not eliminate the potential for dimensional changes. If the deck is in full sun then you will need to decide if the risk is acceptable.

October 2014

Q. I am painting wallpaper in an old villa. Wallpaper is hung over scrim (hessian) and when the paint goes on the wallpaper absorbs some paint and swells. This makes it wrinkly and gives a very poor finish. Is there a way to seal the paper and prevent the wrinkling?

A. The only suggestion I can make is to apply Resene Sureseal to the paper and leave to cure for 24 hours then look to apply the waterborne paint finish.

October 2014

Q. We have a dressed wooden fence which we intend to paint in Resene Half Sea Fog. Should the paint be high gloss or semi-gloss, and is acrylic okay or should it be oil-based?

A. Due to durability considerations we would definitely recommend an exterior waterborne paint, such as Resene Sonyx 101 (semi-gloss). The timber will need to be primed with Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat prior to application of the two coats of Resene Sonyx 101.

October 2014

Q. We are soon to start building a timber weatherboard home. We have been told to watch what colours to paint the exterior and to go for an LRV that affords good protection. We are thinking of using a grey. Are you able to advise some of your range in the grey areas that would be suitable We are thinking Grey Friars for the roof, guttering, with Resene Alabaster for the barge boards, window sill and under eaves so it's the weatherboards we are mainly concerned with.

A. Any restricton on colour really only applies to the exterior wall cladding. If using timber weatherboards the cladding suppler usually places a limit of 40 or 45% on the colour LRV. You can look at the LRV of colours on our online colour library but I suggest that as a first step you confirm with the cladding supplier what is their LRV cutoff.

October 2014

Q. I am looking at spraying some old brown aluminium windows white. What sort of primer and topcoat should I use?

A. Use Resene Vinyl Etch as the primer and any Resene Uracryl 400 series topcoat as the finish coat.

November 2014

Q. I am starting to paint my house which I don't believe has been done in a long time. How do I find out if the paint has lead in it or not?

A. You can purchase a lead testing kit from your local Resene ColorShop. If your property was built before the 70s there is a chance that there may be lead present in one or more of the paint layers. See www.resene.com/leadbased for more information.

November 2014

Q. What is the recommended paint for Onduline (as a wall cladding)? The surface is starting to deteriorate but not too badly at this stage. It seems that Resene CoolColour is a good option.

A. The Onduline will need to be scrubbed down using Resene Paint Prep and Housewash following the label/data sheet directions then prime with Resene Galvo One before applying two coats of a Resene exterior acrylic. I support the application of a Resene CoolColour™ version of a colour for this substrate.

November 2014

Q. Can I use an acrylic tint meant for acrylic sealer to colour 2 pack polyurethane sealer? Will the polyurethane accept the acrylic tint?

A. The colourants used to tint waterborne paints contain additives which react with the two pack hardener and therefore are not suitable for tinting a 2 pack waterborne polyurethane.

November 2014

Q. Am I best to apply Resene enamel gloss paint around windows doors etc in the bathroom/toilet area? Was thinking semi-gloss?

A. You can use either Resene Super Gloss (gloss) or Resene Lusta-Glo (semi-gloss), whichever gloss level you prefer.

November 2014

Q. I am converting a closet into a darkroom and need to paint the interior of the room a matte black. Please can you suggest what product I should use?

A. Resene Film Pro Set Black. You could also use black Resene SpaceCote Flat.

November 2014

Q. I have a rimu bedroom suite that had an oiled finish (possibly linseed) that I would like to paint cream. What do I need to do?

A. Assuming that the surface is hard dry, sand using 220 grit sandpaper, dust off and apply a coat of Resene Wood Primer. Allow to dry for 24 hours then apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat followed by two coats of Resene Lustacryl tinted to your chosen colour. Will take a minimum of 5 days for the system to achieve reasonable hardness and adhesion.

November 2014

Q. I am looking at whitewashing some old wood furniture. I require white latex paint. Mixed with water it will give me the effect I am looking for.

A. Latex is an older term for waterborne paint. However I suggest that you may want to look at using Resene Colorwood Whitewash for this. There is a sample board at Resene ColorShops that you can view.

If you are looking to whitewash existing varnished timbers then sand with 180 or 220 grit sandpaper to provide a mechanical key for the new coatings then brush apply a coat of Resene Colorwood Whitewash to achieve an even as possible lay down of the product (remember to stir the can contents well before using). Apply a second coat if you require a more intense white look. Finish with 1 or 2 coats of Resene Aquaclear varnish in your selected gloss level. The total number of coats including the Resene Colorwood Whitewash layers should be a minimum of 3.

November 2014

Q. We have some aluminium windows that leave our newly painted rooms looking dated - they appear more pink now. Is it possible these can be prepped and painted (internal side) with a paint that will stand up to the elements it will receive as well as not flaking or scratch off?

A. Clean down and lightly wet sand with 400 wet and dry paper then apply Resene Galvo-Prime followed by two coats of Resene Lustacryl.

November 2014

Q. I was hoping you can tell me what the best practice is for paint type for skirting boards? I understand it to be waterbased enamel. Can you also tell me what issues might present themselves if I were to use wall paint on skirting boards?

A. There are three types of resins that need to be considered: conventional acrylic, waterborne enamel and solventborne enamel. Paints of the same gloss level made on each of the resins will have different resistance to scuffing and marking with the worst being the conventional acrylic and the best being the solventborne resin. Wall paints are usually formulated using conventional acrylic resins (Resene Zylone Sheen) but can also be available as a waterborne enamel paint (Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen). Generally people opt for a semi-gloss finish on trims and joinery, including skirting boards, for a more durable finish.

November 2014

Q. Can you paint over a glazed pot for the garden?

A. Yes you can apply a coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer to the cleaned surface and leave to cure for 48 hours then apply 2 coats of any Resene exterior acrylic finish. System will take a minimum of 5 days to achieve adhesion.

November 2014

Q. How do we successfully remove mould from wallpaper without discolouring, tearing or lifting the wallpaper? Ideally we would like to paint over the wallpaper; however we have one room where mould is quite bad.

A. Resene Moss & Mould Killer is the only mould killer we have and it is bleach based, so cannot predict if it will bleach colour from a paper even when used as a dilute solution. You could try it on an area of inconspicuous paper as a trial.

November 2014

Q. I have some old Resene acrylic paint that is lumpy/chunky. What can I mix with it to remove the lumps? It's been sitting around in the garage for two years.

A. If you stir well with a wide flat stirrer and you end up with a smooth mix then it should be ok to use. If not then the can seal may not have been sufficient to prevent drying out and if this has occurred then the paint cannot be used.

November 2014

Q. I'm interested in using Resene Write-On Wall Paint in a school library. I'm considering Resene Anise, a light green, as the wall colour. Are there other reasons to use white or off white? Can Resene Write-On Wall Paint be used over non Resene paints?

A. Resene Write-On Wall Paint can be applied over any Resene basecoat colour. It has not been tested with non Resene paints. Resene Write-On Wall Paint is not a substitute for a dedicated commercial white board as the commercial boards are very smooth and easier to wipe clean.

November 2014

Q. I have a wall which is already painted (primer plus two topcoats). I would like to repaint it with Resene Bedrock metallic. Do I have to prime the surface first or is it ok to paint straight on top?

A. All Resene metallic colours require a tinted basecoat colour to achieve the colour. Hence the answer is yes but not application of a dedicated primer. If the existing topcoat is an enamel then it will have to be sanded to provide a mechanical key for the new paint system.

November 2014

Q. I have a mobile home with a Seratone lined bathroom which I want to paint. It is secured with PVC corner mouldings. I have read your previous advice to others and as the room is only subjected to periodic use would you recommend the laminate system finishing with Resene Lustacryl or the other method using Resene Armourcote 221 with a Resene Uracryl 402 finish? Should I mask off the mouldings or can they be painted?

A. Ensure the walls are clean and grease free then apply a coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer and leave to cure for 48 hours with good ventilation. Then apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat and finish with the two coats of Resene Lustacryl. Ensure good ventilation after applying the last coat of paint.

November 2014

Q. Painting a pre-painted roof with Resene Summit CoolColour in Resene Ironsand. Do I need to undercoat as part of the CoolColour system?

A. If you are looking to get the maximum Resene CoolColour™ benefit then apply a basecoat of Resene Galvo-Prime and then apply the two coats of Resene Summit CoolColour.

November 2014

Q. I would like to paint over a powdercoated outdoor setting as it is looking tired and has been affected by the weather. Could you please advise how I would do this?

A. Scrub down using Resene Paint Prep and Housewash to label directions then apply an adhesion coat of Resene Vinyl Etch and finish with two coats of Resene Uracryl 402.

November 2014

Q. I am building a studio underneath my pole house. The tanalised poles will be a feature within the studio. They have been exposed to the weather for 12 years. Should I be concerned about the chemicals in the poles and what paint or stain would be suitable?

A. It's a difficult question to answer as it depends upon the amount of water that has come into contact with the poles. However expect that any elution should have occurred early and if the poles remain dry then there is no mechanism of elution to occur. Suggest that application of a solid paint system would now be the best option. Prime the poles with Resene Wood Primer then apply two coats of Resene Lumbersider colour to the interior faces.

November 2014

Q. Is there a water based whitewash that is suitable for lightly whitewashing plywood? Could I simply water down some water based undercoat sealer?

A. For interior you can use Resene Colorwood Whitewash.

November 2014

Q. Just sanded down a huge piece of macrocarpa which we are making into a kitchen work bench (no sink in it). Please advise on a clear varnish to use on it.

A. Best product is Resene Polythane, four coats.

November 2014

Q. I am painting the exterior of a weatherboard house. In places I have to strip it back to bare timber and treat and fill rusty nail holes. In other parts the old paint is in good condition and requires only a light sand. My question is which primer/undercoat will I use? I would like to use Resene Wood Primer everywhere, but I am unsure if that can be used over the top of existing paint. Do I use Resene Wood Primer first in bare areas and then use Resene Quick Dry over everything? Do I use Resene Wood Primer only on bare areas and Resene Quick Dry on areas with paint still on it? I am using Resene Sonyx 101 as a topcoat. Will using the Resene Wood Primer prolong the life of the paint finish?

A. Primer selection depends upon the timber - if native timers such as Matai or Totara then Resene Quick Dry is the only primer to use. For other timbers you can use either Resene Quick Dry or Resene Wood Primer.

November 2014

Q. I have just painted a children's chair in artist's acrylic paint and want to seal it in a gloss vanish. Do you have any recommendations?

A. You should be able to use Resene Aquaclear for this. You will need three coats.

November 2014

Q. What products are available for repainting white aluminium? The furniture is just worn in parts but no rust.

A. The best system is to wash down with Resene Roof and Metal Wash following label/data sheet directions then apply a coat of Resene Vinyl Etch adhesion primer followed by two coats of Resene Uracryl 400 series topcoat.

November 2014

Q. Am looking for a Resene product for coating Armaflex insulation for our current megayacht project.

A. We recommend Resene Flexicover E.

November 2014

Q. I need a paint to cover an outdoor ceramic tile terrace that is slippery when wet. Will your anti-slip paints adhere to ceramic tiles?

A. Ensure that the tiles are free of moss/mould and dirt etc. Then apply Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer and leave to cure for 48 hours before undercoating with Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat then finish with two coats of Resene Walk-on or Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path. The system will take about five days to cure and ideally there should be no moisture on the newly painted surface for the first 48 hours.

November 2014

Q. I have replaced a few sheets of Shadowclad® on the exterior of my house. The wood is now exposed. I have waterbased paint. Do I need to first paint with primer? If yes, which one and how many coats? Do I thin the primer?

A. If the cladding is pine then prime with Resene Wood Primer and then apply two coats of Resene Lumbersider. Usually one coat of primer is sufficient and thinning should only be done to aid application, excessive thinning will require application of a second coat of primer. It is not prudent to leave the primed timber exposed for too long.

November 2014

Q. We have a driveway with pressed coloured concrete. The surface has gone. Do you have any covering for the drive to protect it, and make it look glossy as it once was?

A. The only possible product we have for this application is Resene Concrete Clear.

November 2014

Q. I have 20 litres of Resene X-200 surplus to my requirements. Is it appropriate to use it to paint a weatherboard home?

A. Resene X-200 is not formulated for application to timber or primed timber.

November 2014

Q. I have an 80s bathroom that desperately needs refreshing. I know I can paint the wall tiles - but what about the floor? Do you have a product suitable for ceramic floor tiles?

A. We would use Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer as the adhesion primer, leave to cure for 48 hours then apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat and finish with two coats of Resene Lustacryl. The system will require good ventilation and will take 5-7 days to achieve sufficient hardness for foot traffic. This system is not suitable for tiled shower linings or shower floors.

November 2014

Q. We are building a traditional colonial home, north facing. I have asked the painters to use black ultra enamel in gloss for the fascia, windows and posts. They advised they would not guarantee the longevity of their work because of the heat build up effect. They recommended Resene CoolColour paints. What is the guarantee, will it remain glossy and for how long? What preparation will need to be done on raw timber? Our region has snow in winter too.

A. Resene CoolColour™ technology can increase the heat reflectance (total solar reflectance, TSR) of a given colour compared to the same colour tinted using non CoolColour technology. The TSR of Resene Black non cool is 4.5% and this increases to 25.2% for the CoolColour black. CoolColour paints are not cool to touch but have a reduced surface temperature compared to the same non CoolColour under the same radiation conditions. For maximum CoolColour effects we recommend application of 2 coats of the CoolColour topcoat over a white basecoat.

The time to onset of chalking is determined by the binder used to make the paint. In the case of a traditional solventborne enamel this will usually occur within two years on the north and west elevations. With dark colours there is a reduction in this time but with a dark colour the onset of chalking is visually more apparent from the initial onset. Use of a CoolColour does have the potential extend the time to the onset of chalking.

The cedar will need to be primed with Resene Wood Primer before applying the two topcoats. For a fascia board we would recommend using Resene Hi-Glo instead of a solventborne enamel. This will significantly extend the time to the onset of chalking.

Q. A textured ceiling on fibrous plaster when stripped showed much black spotting. Sponging with mould killer faded it but it still remains. Does mould have to be bleached white to be dead?

Similarly paper wallpaper had spots, evident still in the plasterboard once the paper was removed. Much of the mould killer will be absorbed into the plasterboard. The spots are faded but not eliminated. Is mould killer damaging to plasterboard and subsequent primer sealer? A final sponge over with water is practical but a full wash not really so, and would not remove that which has soaked in.

I have had problems in the past with plasterboard ceilings from which paint forever peels despite all primers and sealers tried. No leaks. Is there a risk of this problem following mould treatment?

A. Bleach normally will bleach colour from mould infested areas and this is a visual sign that the mould has been killed. However if spores remain than mould growth will return. Visual recognition of residual spores is often difficult to recognise.

Application of Resene Moss & Mould Killer to wallpaper or bare plasterboard should not damage the paper but damage can occur if the paper is rubbed while wet. The residues of the Resene Moss & Mould Killer treatment needs to be removed from the surface as the byproduct of the use of hypochlorite based mould killers is common salt and this is deleterious to waterborne paint coatings. Appreciate that a wash down of treated surfaces is not possible for internal plasterboard walls so repeated sponging with water is all that can practically be undertaken.

You are correct in identifying that leaks can lead to paint peeling from painted ceilings but the wrong choice of sealer is more often the cause. Many older properties have fibrous plaster ceilings and a solvent borne sealer such as Resene Sureseal must be used for priming of bare areas.

Q. We have a house built in 1970 that we would to love to paint. It has always been wallpapered and wasn't finished to the standard for painting. Do you think we could get away with the Resene Broadwall Surface Prep and Seal or do you think that is pushing it? Also can you use the Resene Broadwall Surface Prep & Seal over lining paper?

A. You will need to seal the lining paper with Resene Sureseal then you can apply the Resene Boardwall Surface Prep & Seal (two coats) and lightly sand. It's difficult to really comment on whether this will give you the desired level of finish as it depends on the existing surface.

November 2014

Q. Our house has two types of claddings: one part is white corrugate, the other Shadowclad® painted professionally with two coats of Resene Sandstone Grey. We had the Shadowclad® assessed and were told that most of the splitting in the sheets are due to the fact that we used too dark a paint and the paint for Shadowclad® should be LRV>40%. Can you please tell us what the value of the Resene Sandstone Grey is? It is suggested that we repaint the house in a lighter colour which would totally ruin the design of our house as the aluminium frames of the windows are matched to contrast - in the white clad part of the house they are Sandstone Grey, in the Shadowclad® part white. Any advice about how we could maintain our colour scheme without exposing the cladding to more damage?

A. The Carter Holt Harvey (CHH) LRV rule is actually LRV >40%. The LRV of Sandstone Grey is 24 which is well below the CHH cutoff LRV. LRV is not a measure of heat reflectance of a colour. The TSR of a colour is a measure of the near infra-red (heat) reflected by a colour. There is no direct relationship between the LRV and TSR for the same colour. However using Resene CoolColour™ technology we can use TSR to allow the possible application of colours with an LRV below the cut-off value of 40%.

For an LRV cutoff of 40% the TSR must be greater than 36%. In the case of Sandstone Grey the TSR of the non cool version is 20%, this increases to 44% for the CoolColour version. TSR values are measured for two coats of colour applied over a white basecoat. So in your case you could use the CoolColour version of Sandstone Grey applied over a white basecoat and meet the TSR/LRV criteria. However you must get this accepted by CHH.

November 2014

Q. I have Resene Texturecote on the ceilings. This product is 30 years old approx. What is the best way to remove this 'plaster' to reveal the plasterboard underneath.

A. No easy way to remove apart from scraping as much as possible back to a level surface then apply a skim coat of plaster.

November 2014

Q. I have varnished my computer table with Resene Aquaclear Satin and have found it is quite abrasive to my mouse and has smoothed the bottom of it. What can I do to reduce the abrasive properties of my finish, preferably without polishing it to a gloss or varnishing it all again?

A. You would need to increase the gloss level. We add flatting agents to reduce the gloss of Resene Aquaclear for the lower gloss versions and this is what is causing the abrasion. You could also use a computer mousepad.

November 2014

Q. I am painting an old villa that had so much paint on the weather boards and was blistering. I stripped all paint back, washed and machine sanded, applied one coat of wood primer, one coat of oil based undercoat and two coats of acrylic low sheen. On all of the north facing areas the paint is coming off back to bare timber. Anywhere there is no concentration from the sun all is good. Inspection shows that the weatherboards are moving and the paint that is coming off is mainly in these areas. The timber might be Kauri, but seems to have more grain splits that I have seen before. I have completed another 135 year old villa with the same process and still looks great today! What can I do to resolve this?

A. If the timber was Matai or Totara then the drying and curing of Resene Wood Primer would be affected and this was a possible reason as to why the primer adhesion failed over the most exposed elevation. But if the timber was Kauri then I would have recommended Resene Wood Primer so cannot really understand why the adhesion failure has occurred.

Grain splits can allow water to get under an applied paint film so this could be a contributory cause. You could look to use our waterborne timber primer, Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat on a test section and then apply Resene Timber Surface Prep to fill small cracks, re prime these areas then apply topcoats.

November 2014

Q. Half our house is (asbestos) fibrolite, the other half weatherboards and we want to repaint. What paint should we use and can we use the same paint for both sections?

A. To follow is our recommendation for painting asbestos containing claddings. Yes, you can use the same top coat for timber weatherboards but a different primer is required.

Condition: Old asbestos fibre paneling previously painted in acrylic, which is infested with mould and dirt.

Asbestos Warning
This material may contain asbestos. Before 1983, most fibrous cement in use in New Zealand contained asbestos. Fibrolite was reinforced with asbestos only. 'Hardiflex' was reinforced with 4% asbestos and 4% wood fibre. These products were used extensively for wall claddings on houses, garages etc, and also for corrugated roofing. These products pose a health hazard if care is not taken in surface preparation prior to painting or if just cleaning down.

Health Hazards when dealing with asbestos are:
A progressive scarring of the lungs called asbestosis. Cancer of various parts of the body. When inhaled asbestos fibres are trapped in the lungs and stay there for decades with the potential of causing disease. See OSH web site www.osh.dol.govt.nz/order/catalogue/519.shtml for more details.

Special attention needed in surface preparation: Removal and/or disposal of asbestos containing materials (or just cleaning down of them) may require special permission and a license. Contact your local Council offices to determine your obligations under their bylaws. Free asbestos is likely to be released during surface preparation and therefore suitable dust masks or respirators should be worn by all operators involved in surface preparation and disposal of waste. Special care must be taken to contain all debris washed off the walls and this should be kept wet and disposed of in a landfill. This material must not be left to dry out.

Preparation for painting:
If any areas of moss or mould infestation exist then treat them with Resene Moss & Mould Killer, diluted at the rate of 200 grams to 1 litre of clean water. Leave for up to 48 hours to achieve full kill. For heavy infestations more applications may be needed.

Carefully scrub down using a 25% solution of Resene Paint Prep and Housewash and water to remove all dirt, moss and mould residue and any unsound coatings. Carefully collect and dispose of safely, any debris released from the panels in this process. Rinse clean with fresh water and allow to dry.

Any cracking sealants should be thoroughly raked out and replaced after the painting has been completed with a suitable sealant that matches the paint colour. This sealant should not be painted over.

Any rusty nails should be pulled out and replaced with new galvanised nails positioned about 5-10 mm from old nail hole. Spot prime new nail heads and old nail holes with Resene Galvo-Prime.

Fill nail holes and any other small holes with Selleys Permafill. Leave 24 hours to dry then sand smooth.

Any cracked sheets should be replaced with new sheets of fibrous cement board.

eal any bare fibrous cement with a full coat of Resene Sureseal applied at the spreading rate of about 5-12 square metres per litre depending on surface porosity.

On porous surfaces a second coat of Resene Sureseal is strongly recommended to thoroughly seal in asbestos fibres.

Painting:
Apply two full coats of Resene Sonyx 101.

November 2014

Q. I want to paint over a stained exterior finish with paint. What do I need to do?

A. Condition: Old penetrating stain in varying condition. Badly weathered in exposed areas and sound in sheltered areas. Mould is widespread.

Warning: Painting over old stained timber is likely to have limited success because backs of boards and timber end grains may not have been sealed properly during erection of the building. In this case the installation of soakers over all joint areas will assist the performance of the new paint system. Total removal of the old stain and restoration of weathered timber fibres is essential.

Preparation for painting:
Thoroughly scrape to remove as much remaining stain as is practicable. If timber is roughsawn then scrubbing with a stiff nylon brush may help. To areas of remaining stain, apply a full coat of Resene Strip-Off Paint Stripper and leave for 1-2 hours to soften the paint. Taking care not to damage the substrate, remove as much of the softened old stain as possible using a suitable scraper or stiff nylon brush as is suitable. Repeat the process if any stain remains. Thoroughly rinse clean with fresh water.

Note 1: Alternatively, all old paint may be carefully removed by use of Sea to Sky Stripper, hot air guns, mechanical sanders or other appropriate means that will not damage the timber or allow the uncontrolled release of debris into the environment.

If any areas of moss or mould infestation exist then treat them with Resene Moss & Mould Killer, diluted at the rate of 200 grams to 1 litre of clean water. Leave for up to 48 hours to achieve full kill. For heavy infestations more applications may be needed.

Thoroughly scrub down with a 25% solution of Resene Paint Prep and Housewash and water to remove all dirt, dust, grease, moss and mould residue, chalk, cobwebs and other contaminants. Rinse thoroughly with clean water.

Note: Timber must be allowed to dry out thoroughly before painting.

If timber is rough sawn thoroughly dry scrub with a very stiff nylon brush (sand smooth areas) to remove any grey, weathered timber fibres and to produce a sound surface for painting. Ensure any sharp arrisses are sanded to a rounded profile.

Apply a saturation coat of Resene TimberLock to improve adhesion and performance of subsequent coats. Allow to dry for 24 hours then wipe off any excess, still tacky material, with a Turps wet cloth.

Apply one coat Resene Wood Primer at the spreading rate of 12 square metres per litre.

Note: If Totara or Matai timber is present then substitute Resene Wood Primer with Resene Quick Dry Acrylic Primer Undercoat.

Fill all nail holes, damaged or split timber with Selleys Ready Mixed Permafill applied in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions. Sand smooth and spot prime filler (after 24 hours dry) with the same primer used previously.

Painting:
Apply two full coats of Resene Lumbersider.
