Q&A   p. 37

Q. We have bought a house and we have a range of flooring to update. Please give us lots of ideas of what we could do. Most of them are wooden.

A. Wooden floors are easy to stain or paint but staining will usually require more preparation to get the floor ready for staining.

Staining

To stain you need to remove all the existing coating, then stain with a product such as Resene Colorwood, then apply protective clear coats, such as Resene Qristal ClearFloor. The wood stain can rejuvenate and enhance the timber colour. Or if you want to just protect the floor, you can just apply the clear finish. Stained or clear finished wooden floors are very popular in villas and traditional homes, but are also becoming popular in modern homes. There is a real trend to bringing nature indoors and authentic timber floors achieve this well. A stained finish lets the wood grain show through. Because of the natural grain and variation in the timber, it helps to hide marks and dust because they tend to get camouflaged by the wood grain – very helpful in a busy household! For colours most choose a stain colour close to the original colour to keep the look authentic or opt for a black stain or a whitewashed look. It's rare to see a coloured (non neutral) stain used for general flooring in a home.

Prep for painting

Prep time is usually quicker if you are planning to paint the floor. Depending on the existing floorboards, you can often just clean them and paint direct. Otherwise if the existing boards have a very hard solventborne finish the existing boards may need sanding and a primer or sealer first before topcoating. Time wise for the painting, it's not much different to painting a wall. The prep to paint a floor is usually faster than staining a floor, because when staining a floor you need to go back to bare floorboards for the stain to work. For paint you just need to go back to a sound surface that the paint can stick to.

What to choose

Most wooden floors can be painted or whitewashed – it really comes down to the look you are trying to create. Generally speaking if the timber floor is very uneven in colour and not that nice to look at, painting is usually the best option. If the floor has a nice wood grain effect then whitewashing is likely a better option as you will still be able to see the woodgrain.

Most products are now waterbased and can be easily applied by home decorators. If you're comfortable with painting a wall, then you could easily tackle a floor yourself.

Painting a floor can be a very easy way to bring it into a colour palette, or sometimes it's the ideal stopgap measure while you save up for a whole new floor. Painted finishes can be whatever colour you choose, though generally we recommend avoiding white, or very light and dark colours, as they tend to show up dust more. You can also get creative with multiple colours – e.g. each floorboard or section or floorboard in a different colour – this is a creative option used on stairs or in children's rooms.

Older floors

For older or damaged floors, or floors such as concrete or old lino, where you need to hide the existing finish, then a painted finish using Resene Walk-On is recommended with a clear coat of Resene Concrete Wax. The Resene Concrete Wax gives extra scuff resistance.

Whitewash, greywash and blonding

Whitewashed, and more recently greywashed, looks are very popular for flooring, embracing a Scandi style look. These work well teamed with white, grey or blue grey walls for a timeless, yet relaxing and well weathered look. We're seeing this look for everything from city homes to casual beach baches – it's the perfect antidote to busy city life. Resene Colorwood Whitewash and Greywash may be applied over an existing clear finished floor, without the need to strip right back to bare timber.

Often decorators will consider blonding their floors to lighten the timber. Blonding is the same as staining. The reason it is called blonding is because it adds a blonded stain look (e.g. Resene Rock Salt) whereas most people thinking of staining as being more woody colours. Whitewashing using Resene Colorwood Whitewash is easier because the white is already in the product so you only need to use one product. For blonding you need to get the floor back to bare timber, then stain with Resene Colorwood Rock Salt and then clear finish with Resene Qristal ClearFloor.

Resene Colorwood Whitewash and Greywash have the tinter in the product so you don't need a separate staining coat, so it can save you a little application time. Simply apply the Resene Colorwood Whitewash or Greywash to your prepared floor. Both capture the scandi trend. Traditionally the whitewash look has been very popular but we are finding that the greyer tones of the Resene Colorwood Greywash are perhaps a little more forgiving in a home of marks and dust because the colour of the floor tends to hide a little more than the whiter finish.

Resene Colorwood Whitewash and Greywash are easy to apply you just need to take care with application that you don't end up with thin and thick patches. Paint is more forgiving because you can always do another coat to even up the colour.

Concrete floors

Concrete floors are also growing in popularity. Most of these tend to be natural coloured but they still need to be looked after. A regular coat of Resene Concrete Wax helps keep the surface protected so it is easier to keep clean.

Garage floors

Remember to paint your garage floor too. A nicely painted garage floor is easier to clean and much nicer on your feet than unfinished concrete is.

Hiring a professional

Staining a floor is a job you might want to call in a professional if you are not comfortable operating a floor sander (you can hire these). Also staining a floor takes more care as you need to wipe the stain and ensure you don't get lap marks where the stain is darker because it has built up. The clear finishes most decorators use are waterborne and can be easily applied. As long as you have allowed enough time to prep properly, stain and apply the clear coats, staining a floor can be easily done by a home decorator.

However if you are opting for a very hard finish, like Resene Polythane, the very hard finish is achieved through a solventborne finish and this gives off stronger solvent odours. Generally we recommend if you want to use this product as the clear coat, that it's best to hire someone to do the job.

If you have a busy family and pets and limited time to get the project done, you might be best to call in a professional and stay a few days with friends so you don't have kids and pets walking through the area while the job is in progress.

Stencilled/patterned floors

We are seeing more decorators create a stencil pattern on the floor – e.g. creating a tiled look or a repeat pattern using low tack masking tape and just using paint for the contrast. This can be a much cheaper option than tiling and allows you to be creative with the design and colour.

Q. How do I paint an Econoheater?

A. Econo-Heat Wall Panel Heaters can be painted to match your décor or you can use paint to turn your Econo-Heat Wall Panel Heater into a piece of art.

To paint simply...

  1. Make sure your Econo-Heat Wall Panel Heater is turned off and is at the normal room temperature.
  2. Wipe down the surface to ensure it is free of dust.
  3. Apply your chosen Resene paint using a nook and cranny roller.
  4. Place the nook and cranny roller into a plastic bag between coats so that it doesn’t dry out.
  5. Apply a second coat of Resene paint.
  6. Wash the nook and cranny roller out in water and sit back and enjoy your new look heater.

Quick tips...

  1. If you want a more decorative effect on your heater you can apply multiple colours onto your heater and apply by brush if preferred. A roller finish will tend to give the smoothest finish.
  2. Only use standard pigmented paints on your heater. Do not use stains or metallic finishes. Only paint the front face of the heater. Do not paint the back.
  3. Econo-Heat Wall Panel Heaters need good airflow to work well. Do not place items over the heater or against the heater.
  4. Allow 48 hours after applying the paint before turning the heater on, to give the paint time to cure.

Q. We're hoping you'd be keen to provide us with a Resene's top tips for considering what paints/materials etc to use on a sustainable/prefabricated/earth friendly home?

A. When you're planning to decorate your home, there's a myriad of products to choose from. Just how do you decide what to use and where? Here's some tips to get you started…

  • Focus on products that will last. There's no point using a product that is 'greener' or cheaper at the start if it won't last as long, as you'll end up having to repaint faster wasting more resources that painting with a quality paint at the start.
  • Once you know the types of products that are suitable for your project, then look at their environmental credentials, not the other way around.
  • Look for products that have approval from independent assessment programmes, such as Environmental Choice New Zealand. That way you know they have been measured and assessed against a standard.
  • Take care on the extras as often these are overlooked when considering environmental credentials. E.g. Make sure the tinters in your paints no added VOC (volatile organic compounds) so you're not adding VOCs when your colour is added.
  • Work with suppliers you trust. Even with the best products things can sometimes go wrong. If you work with a reputable supplier, they should be there to help you if needed later.
  • Ask lots of questions! And listen to what you are told, then sort through the information to see what's most relevant for your decision.
  • Websites are a great resource of more information and details on products. It's a handy way to do some background research on your choices and then you can have more focused questions to ask when you are visiting the supplier's shop.
  • Take care of your waste. Recycle unwanted paint cans and paint etc through Resene PaintWise. Check when you are purchasing items what recycling or product stewardship programmes are in place to take care of the waste.
  • If something sounds far too good to be true, it probably is.

The key is to focus on what performance you need for each of your project and choose products that will provide that. Don't be tempted to choose a product that isn't right for the job just because it seems more environmentally friendly or you'll risk having to redo the job with the right paint.

Q. How long can I leave Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer before applying a topcoat?

A. At least a month. When you can get to recoating check the primed surface to see if it has chalked, wash down using Resene Paint Prep and Housewash diluted and used to label instructions then topcoat.

April 2020

Q. Can I use gloss enamel oil based on my bathroom ceiling? Does it have a tendency to peel?

A. You can use a gloss enamel on a bathroom ceiling. The tendency for peeling is determined by the adhesion of the existing paint system and preparation prior to topcoating.

April 2020

Q. I have a weatherboard house built about 7 years ago. It was painted poorly by someone else and the paint is peeling off the pine weatherboards. I suspect it was never primed or undercoated properly. What primer or undercoat would be best to use after I have sanded the wood back? I have some of your Resene Quick Dry primer but wonder if an oil-based product would be better. The topcoats will be Resene Lumbersider.

A. You can use either but given the choice I would use the Resene Wood Primer.

April 2020

Q. What undercoat and paint can I use on a baby’s cot? Just looking at a white but believe it needs to be VOC free?

A. Prime with Resene Quick Dry and finish with two coats of Resene Lustacryl. Both paints are Environmental Choice NZ approved. If the cot is painted or varnished thoroughly sand to profile for recoating.

April 2020

Q. We wish to paint a deck that was originally stained with an oil-based product. It has marks and stains from the past, so a paint might be the answer to rejuvenate.

A. Scrub down with Resene Timber and Deck Wash to label instructions. Apply a full coat of Resene Wood Primer and then finish with two coats of Resene Walk-on.

April 2020

Q. Which products will I need to paint an unpainted uncorrugated iron roof on a villa – the iron is not new but in good condition?

A. Wash down using Resene Roof and Metal Wash diluted and used to label instructions then apply a full coat of Resene Galvo One and finish with two coats of Resene Summit Roof.

April 2020

Q. Can you paint over a plastic weatherboard home?

A. Yes, the plastic is a PVC type and can be painted with any Resene exterior waterborne paint. Scrub down using Resene Paint Prep and Housewash diluted and used to label instructions then apply two coats of your selected topcoat.

If selecting a dark topcoat colour use the Resene CoolColour version of the colour. Application of a Resene CoolColour will reflect more heat than the same colour made using non-cool pigmentation and reduce heat related stress on the substrate; it will not make the painted surface cool to touch. I would suggest that you restrict the colour chosen to colours with an LRV of greater than 40% to minimise heat related issues.

April 2020

Q. I’m presently in the throes of repainting door and window joinery. As is everyone else I suspect!

I’d like to know what paint oil or acrylic would you recommend for the door sills of my front and French doors? Sills are matai and pine.

A. For the sills the primer is Resene Quick Dry. While the primer can then overcoated with a waterborne enamel finish, such as Resene Enamacryl, a solventborne topcoat such as Super Gloss will give a harder wearing finish to foot traffic. The only downside is that the Resene Super Gloss enamel will undergo chalking sooner than Resene Enamacryl.

April 2020

Q. I’ve got a block wall painted in Resene X-200. If I grew a vine up the wall would that effect the paint and its waterproofing properties?

A. If the vine, such as ivy, uses tendrils to attach to the surface then this can pull paint off the substrate and therefore exposes the bare substrate to the elements.

April 2020

Q. Can SRG grit be used with Resene Sonyx 101 or Resene Lumbersider? Can they be applied over each other?

A. The standard SRG Additive can be used in any single pack Resene waterborne coating. The SRG modification is usually in the second coat of a three-coat flooring application only.

All Resene exterior single pack waterborne paints can be overcoated with each other once the first coat is dry, however they can’t be intermixed as wet paint.

April 2020

Q. I am staining my old cedar cladding in Resene Waterborne Woodsman Pitch Black. After two coats I’m still seeing some brown hues of the cedar. Are there any risks/issues of applying a third coat?

The cedar cladding is in good condition for its age. The cedar board are a mix of grades including dressed, rough sawn, and a mix of the two. The stain looks great where the cedar is dressed, but it's the rough sawn (particularly where the grain lines run deep) that the brown is still showing.

A. There is no technical reason why you cannot apply a third coat. Stains are semi-transparent so the base timber colour is expected to ‘grin’ through the coats of stain colour.

April 2020

Q. I have old timber windows and doors that are cedar with clear finish varnish on the inside. Over time, especially on transoms the varnish has gone and the timber is stained where condensation has sat and the timber is either a dark colour from mildew or bleached in colour. What can I do to treat any mildew and restore the timber to its natural finish/colour before re-varnishing? Also, the putty has perished, do I simply replace with wood putty or a timber coloured sealant?

A. The staining probably results from water ingress under the varnish film. This is commonly seen with older native timber windows that have been clear coated.

The clear will need to be stripped to expose the bare timber, treat first with Resene Moss & Mould Killer to label instructions and then with a 5% solution of oxalic acid. Oxalic acid is available from most hardware store chains. While it is an acid it is not that corrosive but the active is the same as in rhubarb leaves so ensure you wear gloves, eye and clothing to protect exposed skin. Apply the oxalic solution into the stains and leave and then remove by repeated wiping with a damp cloth changing the water on a regular basis. Then allow to dry out.

Cannot guarantee that this will remove all of the water staining. If the water ingress can’t be addressed reapplication of a clear coat will see the situation being repeated.

April 2020

Q. I am planning to paint a sheet of plywood with Resene FX Blackboard Paint (for exterior use). I have primed it with Resene Quick Dry and would also like to add a coat of Resene Lumbersider before using the Resene FX Blackboard Paint (as the plywood is outside and I may not get to use the Blackboard Paint for a while). Will this be ok?

A. Yes, it is. I would suggest that you envelope prime (front/back/edges) of the ply sheet with Quick Dry and the coat of Resene Lumbersider, then apply the two coats of Resene FX Blackboard Paint to the exposed face.

April 2020

Q. Can Resene Lustacryl semi-gloss waterborne enamel exterior/interior paint be used for ceilings and architraves?

A. Yes it can as long as it is applied over an appropriately prepared and primed surface. It is a semi-gloss finish which may highlight surface imperfections is certain lighting conditions.

April 2020

Q. My Kwila outdoor setting needs to be re-stained. The boards are all flaking and dried. What is the best way to prepare the table and the chairs for restaining? And what stain do you recommend?

A. Weathered Kwila will split. Sand thoroughly to remove splinters and achieve a smooth finish then apply two coats of Resene Woodsman Wood Oil Stain.

April 2020

Q. I am looking to paint over the bricks that surround my inbuilt fire. What paints do you recommend I use?

A. If hand contact can be maintained on the bricks when the fire is at full heat and the bricks are not glazed apply a seal coat of Resene Sureseal and finish with two coats of Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen or Resene Lustacryl.

April 2020

Q. Our outdoor slatted PVC table has lost its sheen and is subject to staining. Can this be finished with Resene varnish or polyurethane, clear, as we wish to retain the existing colour which matches the chairs.

A. You will need to remove the staining and then apply two coats of Resene Concrete Clear Gloss.

April 2020

Q. I am restoring some Kwila outdoor canvas backed chairs. Do you have a system for paint/staining Kwila?

A. You can use Resene Woodsman Wood Oil to stain the Kwila and Resene Deep Clean to treat the canvas.

April 2020

Q. We are polyurethaning some kitchen cabinets – sides and drawers. We have some Resene Qristal ClearFloor 2k. We have a base and a hardener. We were wondering if you could just use the base for this or if it would need to be mixed. Or if you would advise a different product?

A. You could use Resene Aquaclear – available in satin, semi-gloss or gloss (not Resene Aquaclear Natural).

April 2020

Q. My question is regarding painting timber joinery. They are currently pained with enamel paint. I have scraped away the old flaky paint and then sanded using a small triangular multitool. I have applied one coat of enamel undercoat. However, I can still see through the undercoat back to patches of bare wood. Does it need another coat of undercoat? My plan is to apply two coats of waterbased enamel as a topcoat. But I’m unsure if this will hide the patches of bare timber.

A. Undercoats and primers are not designed to give opacity, this comes for the two coats of topcoats so one full coat of undercoat is normally sufficient.

April 2020

Q. We are painting internal cedar joinery which has previously been varnished. Is it ok to sand back, and use waterbased enamel paint? Or should we use oil based?

A. The existing varnish will need to be well-sanded. Cedar contains tannins which can be dissolved and end up in the waterborne topcoat. To avoid this, apply a coat of Resene Enamel Undercoat before topcoating.

April 2020

Q. I want to change the colour of an outdoor teak bench. It was previously coated with an oil that dried. and is well weathered. What would you suggest ? I don't want to sand it back.

A. Treat with Resene Moss & Mould Killer diluted and used to label directions then apply two coats of Resene Woodsman Wood Oil Stain.

April 2020

Q. What is the best way to paint bricks white?

A. You need to determine if the bricks are glazed or not and that all pointing is sound.

If any areas of moss or mould infestation exist then treat them with Resene Moss & Mould Killer diluted and used to label instructions. Leave for up to 48 hours to achieve full kill. For heavy infestations more applications may be needed.

Then if the bricks are glazed apply a thin coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer and allow to cure without water contact for at least 48 hours before overcoating. The sealer is not designed to be applied as a thick wet film thickness or give opacity, the thinner the coat the better.

If the brickwork is not glazed apply a seal coat of Resene Concrete Primer thinned 10% with water.

For very old brick work apply a saturation coat of Resene Sureseal.

Once appropriately primed the bricks surface can then be top coated with either Resene Lumbersider or Resene Sonyx 101 in the required topcoat colour. When a dark topcoat colour is selected apply the Resene CoolColour version of the topcoat colour. Application of a Resene CoolColour will reflect more heat than the same colour made using non-cool pigmentation and reduce heat related stress on the substrate; it will not make the painted surface cool to touch.

April 2020

Q. We have had the interior walls of our new build painted in Resene White Pointer. We have sought to have the curtain rails powder coated in the same colour, but this colour doesn’t seem to be available in power coating.

A. Powder coatings available tend to be in very limited colour ranges different to what paint suppliers supply for wall paints. The powder coating colours tend to be more in line with the colours you get for roof and joinery work, not what is commonly chosen for walls.

You can use (liquid) paint to coat a curtain rail as an alternative to get a consistent colour finish.

The other option, depending on your joinery colour, is to get the curtain rail to match that so that the look is consistent. That way when you may want to change the paint colour later the curtain rail will still match something else in the room and won't need updating.

We find most customers prefer to do that or opt for a metal look curtain rail, rather than trying to match the wall, because wall colours tend to be changed more regularly.

April 2020

Q. What is the best paint to use for the sheltered steel columns on a commercial building to protect against the elements?

A. The steel work is located in what we call a sheltered corrosion micro-environment. The lack of rain-washing means that slat and other contaminants do not get washed off the surfaces.

If any areas of moss or mould infestation exist then treat them with Resene Moss & Mould Killer diluted and used to label/data sheet. Leave for up to 48 hours to achieve full kill. For heavy infestations more applications may be needed.

Scrub down using Resene Paint Prep and Housewash diluted and used to label/data sheet.

Thoroughly scrub the surface with a stiff Nylon broom to ensure complete removal of all grease, moss and mould residue, and any other contaminants, then high pressure water blast ensuring all loose paint and salts are also removed.

All paint that is flaking or unsound must be removed by using mechanical methods, (3M Rust and Paint Removal Disc), chemical stripper or high-pressure waterblast taking care not to damage either the substrate or the surrounding areas.

Remove all areas of white corrosion material and as much red rust as is practicable and all paint that is flaking or unsound must be removed by using mechanical methods, (3M Rust and Paint Removal Disc),to leave only tightly adherent corrosion products taking care not to damage either the substrate or the surrounding areas.

Where under-film corrosion is taking place, the existing paint must first be removed as previous methods including under film corrosion products taking care not to damage sound zinc coated areas. All paint edges must be feathered to a smooth finish.

Note: The performance of the subsequent paint systems will be largely dependent on the thoroughness of this surface preparation stage.

Prime prepared areas of corrosion using Resene ArmourZinc 120 then apply two coats of Resene Armourcote 221 and finish with two coats of Resene Uracryl 403 colour.

April 2020

Q. We are currently painting our garage. I just wondered what prep is required before painting our steel garage doors?

A. If any areas of moss or mould infestation exist then treat them with Resene Moss & Mould Killer diluted and used to label instructions. Leave for up to 48 hours to achieve full kill. For heavy infestations more applications may be needed.

Scrub down using Resene Paint Prep and Housewash diluted and used to label instructions. Thoroughly scrub the surface with a stiff Nylon broom to ensure complete removal of all grease, moss and mould residue, and any other contaminants, then rinse with copious amounts of fresh water or high-pressure water blast ensuring all lose paint and salts are also removed.

Prime areas of prepared corrosion and bare substrate with Resene GP Metal Primer then apply two coats of Resene Summit Roof.

April 2020

Q. Is there a way to wallpaper over wallpaper? Same parts of the wallpaper are smooth and stuck on solid, some parts have rips and some parts are peeling back. I'd like to, if I can, re-wallpaper without having to peel the wallpaper off.

A. Normally we don’t recommend wallpaper on top of wallpaper. However, there was a past practice of using PVA adhesives to fix wallpaper, if the paper was fixed using this the removal is next to impossible without causing serious damage to the plasterboard.

You can spot prime the areas where the paper has been removed from with Resene Sureseal and then use a gypsum stopping compound to fill and fair it. After sanding smooth, apply a full coat of Resene Sureseal before re hanging wallpaper.

April 2020

Q. How should I repaint a badly weathered and cracked pine handrail?

A. You will need to do a total strip of all existing paint work and a thorough sand to restore the original timber colour. Fill cracks using a RepairCare filling system (available from all Resene ColorShops) then apply a full coat of Resene Quick Dry and finish with two coats of Resene Enamacryl.

If selecting a dark topcoat colour, we recommend application of the Resene CoolColour version of the topcoat colour. Application of a Resene CoolColour will reflect more heat than the same colour made using non-cool pigmentation and reduce heat related stress on the substrate; it will not make the painted surface cool to touch.

April 2020

Q. I have a compressed bamboo benchtop. Can you advise how to care for it? Should I use some sort of edible oil? And how to apply it?

A. Paint systems, clear and pigmented, don’t tend to work as well on bamboo. Bamboo isn’t a timber but a grass so timber coating principles do not apply. Only suggestion is to thoroughly sand the surface with 120 grit sandpaper, dust off and finish with a wipe using a wet cloth.

Apply a coat of Resene Aquaclear Gloss and leave to dry overnight then lightly sand with 220 grit sandpaper then apply a second coat of Aquaclear Gloss.

April 2020

Q. I have a Kauri desk that I am looking at renovating. What product would you recommend I use? It currently has no stain or varnish on it.

A. Traditional solventborne clear varnishes highlight the natural colour in the timber. If clear coating sand well to achieve a smooth finish, dust off and then apply a seal coat of Resene Qristal Clear Poly-Gloss followed by two additional coats of your preferred gloss level of Resene Qristal Clear polyurethane.

April 2020

Q. I want to change the colour of my metal garage door. What type of paint would I use for this?

A. Scrub down using Resene Paint Prep and Housewash diluted and used to label instructions. Apply a full coat of Resene Pre-Coated Steel Primer and finish with two coats of Resene Summit Roof.

April 2020

Q. We are planning to paint our new exterior fence and would like to select a black colour. Could you please advise what to buy for this job?

A. Apply a saturation coat of Resene TimberLock and leave to cure for at least 48 hours then apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry and finish with two coats of Resene Lumbersider CoolColour Black. Application of a Resene CoolColour will reflect more heat than the same colour made using non-cool pigmentation and reduce heat related stress on the substrate; it will not make the painted surface cool to touch. The CoolColour system is recommended as fence timbers can undergo distortion when painted black, the CoolColour system will reduce but not eliminate this form occurring.

April 2020

Q. I'm thinking of building some raised garden beds from untreated pallet wood and thought I might be able to protect it with a paint system. I don't mind if it's a tinted paint or a clear coat, and I'd do the cut ends as well as all faces. It doesn’t need to be a full-on preservative per se (otherwise I'd just used treated timber) but more a simple protection to give the pallet wood a few more years. I know I'll have to replace the boards regularly, but I'm happy to do this as I've got time on my hands.

A. You can use Resene Water Lockout for the internal surfaces and a Resene Woodsman Stain for exterior faces.

April 2020

Q. I have an inbuilt fire with a flue goes up through an old concrete/ brick chimney. There is quite a bit of soot and creosote on the outside of the chimney that I have to repaint. What are the preparation requirements?

A. Thoroughly scrub down using Resene Paint Prep and Housewash diluted and used to label instructions. Then apply a coat of Resene Sureseal before topcoating with two coats of a Resene exterior waterborne paint.

April 2020

Q. I am repainting our small trailer and removed all loose matter and painted it with Resene Rust-Arrest Red Oxide. What product do we use to topcoat it? I’m thinking of a grey.

A. You could use Resene Super Gloss enamel as the topcoat.

April 2020

Q. I’m painting the outside of an old cast iron claw foot bath. The bath has some patches of rust on the feet and on the bath itself (just surface I think not flaking away etc). The bath is partially painted and partially just the iron.

How do I prepare and paint this?

A. All paint that is flaking or unsound must be removed by using mechanical methods, (3M Rust and Paint Removal Disc), chemical stripper or high-pressure waterblast taking care not to damage either the substrate or the surrounding areas.

Remove all areas of white corrosion material and as much red rust as is practicable and all paint that is flaking or unsound must be removed by using mechanical methods (3M Rust and Paint Removal Disc) to leave only tightly adherent corrosion products taking care not to damage either the substrate or the surrounding areas.

Where under-film corrosion is taking place, the existing paint must first be removed as previous methods including under film corrosion products taking care not to damage sound zinc coated areas.

All paint edges must be feathered to a smooth finish.

Sand the existing sound paint system and prime bare and prepared areas of corrosion with a coat of Resene Rust-Arrest and apply a coat of Resene Enamel Undercoat and finish with two coats of Resene Super Gloss or Resene Lusta-Glo enamel.

April 2020

Q. We have some outdoor pathways around our house that are terracotta tiles, and when wet are extremely slippery. We'd like to be able to paint these with a non-slip resurfacing paint if possible? We saw that you stock one but we wondered if this would work on non-glazed terracotta tiles?

A. Ensure the tiles are clean and apply a seal coat of Resene Sureseal followed by two coats of Resene Non-Skid Deck and Path.

April 2020

Q. I am considering buying an older Lockwood house. The timber throughout is dark. If I was to have it blonded, would it be as light as the photos on your website. That is the look I am after.

A. It will do however the degree of whiteness can be adjusted by adding Resene Colorwood Enhance White to the coats of Resene Aquaclear.

The system would be as follows; Using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner ensure the surfaces to be painted are clean and free from grease, pay particular attention to hand contact areas.

Sand the existing varnish using 220 grit sandpaper to de gloss profile for recoating (do not need to remove the existing varnish) and apply an even coat of Resene Colorwood Whitewash. Application of the whitewash can be tricky as areas of overlap will appear whiter. Then apply two coats of Resene Aquaclear with an added pottle of Resene Colorwood Enhance White. If after applying the Resene Colorwood Whitewash you decided that the level of whiteness is sufficient then there is no need to add the Resene Colorwood Enhance White to the subsequent coats of Resene Aquaclear. If you still want an increased level of white add a pottle of Resene Colorwood Enhance White to the first coat of Resene Aquaclear and assess the level of whiteness. If sufficient then apply the final coat of Resene Aquaclear without the Resene Colorwood Enhance; if not add the Resene Colorwood Enhance again.

Q. I have a problem and hopefully you could help me. Our house has internal water guttering which I believe is a copper base with butynol edging for waterproofing which is overlapped onto the soffits. The rain has caused the butynol to weep (for want of a better word) and stains the soffits or the paint work. Do you have a Resene product that would help solve this problem please?

A. The staining is coming from UV induced break down of the butynol. Assuming you can access the butynol then scrub down using Resene Paint Prep and Housewash diluted and used to label instructions then prime the butynol with Resene Membrane Primer to the butynol then overcoat with Resene Sonyx 101. Where the staining has run down the painted surface scrub down using the paint Prep and Housewash then apply the Resene Sonyx 101. No need for the Resene Membrane Primer if painting onto an existing painted surface.

Q. I have a set of 6 Mid-century Cassala chairs that I believe are fibreglass. They are in really good structural condition and won't need fixing or filling. I would like to know how to repaint them.

A. The existing fibreglass will require sanding with a fine sandpaper grade to provide a key for painting. Then apply a coat of Resene Armourcote 221 and finish with 2 coats of Resene Uracryl 402 or Resene Uracryl 404 depending upon your gloss level requirements.

Q. I have stripped timber window surrounds for repainting after 30 years of exposure to intense sunlight from the north and west sunlight.

I would like to know what treatments will be suitable for repainting that will resist the intense sunlight and heat for the future.

I would like to follow the existing colour which is a chocolate brown which is compatible with the aluminium window joinery. I mention this detail because I cannot use the lesser colours to attenuate the sunlight and heat.

The timber is interior window surround in softwood pine finger jointed. So, the heat in the direct sun is quite intense.

A. After sanding back, you can apply two coats of Resene Quick Dry and finish with two coats of Resene Lustacryl topcoat.

The lighter the topcoat colour the more heat that will be reflected from the painted surface.

Q. I am going to paint a celling with Pinex tiles on it and want to know if I should brush paint the joints before using a roller? They are smallish tiles.

A. We recommend applying a full coat of Resene Sureseal before topcoating these tiles. If the joints are powder coated metal apply a coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer.

Q. I have a concrete floor in a café that I want to paint. It looks like it has a clear finish on it. Which product should I use?

A. Best prep is to diamond grind to achieve a uniform surface profile similar to 180 grit sandpaper. Ensure all grinding dust is removed, this may require wet mopping, then apply Resene Aquapoxy for Flooring.

Q. The fence around my deck also holds pipes for an aquaponic system. It has been painted at least 6 years ago with a white acrylic, over a brown stain. It gets a bit of mould because of the aquaponics. What should I use to repaint it?

A. Treat the area to be painted with Resene Moss & Mould Killer diluted and used to label instructions.

Sand back areas of flaking paint to a sound edge ensuring the underlying stain is also sanded. Spot prime areas of bare timber/original stain with Resene Quick Dry then apply a full coat of Resene Quick Dry and finish with two coats of Resene Enamacryl.

Treat the painted surfaces using Resene Deep Clean diluted and used to label instructions at the beginning of spring and again at the beginning of autumn for ongoing control of bio growth.
