Q&A   p. 27

Q. I want to repaint the exterior of concrete block premises used by my son for his mechanics business. The current paintwork, which I think is oil based enamel, is in pretty good condition - just a bit shabby. What would be the best hardwearing paint system to use in this case - noting that it’s a pretty dirty environment in terms of oil, grease and the like?

A. Scrub down using Resene Heavy Duty Paint Prep and Oil Remover diluted and used to label instructions. Spot prime any bare areas with Resene Sureseal then apply a full coat of Resene Quick Dry and finish with two coats of Resene Lustacryl.

February 2018

Q. Do you have a steel etching primer?

A. Yes, Resene Vinyl Etch.

February 2018

Q. I am an artist experimenting with clay/ceramics. Recently I tried Resene Silver Aluminium on already glazed black ceramic. It looks sensational. I don't know now how it would react on outdoor artwork. Would it be ok for outdoor projects? Would it last? Do I have to protect it with polyurethane? I would be happy if I could use it on future projects as it looks stunning.

A. Resene FX Metallic colours can be used outside, the Resene Silver Aluminium and the 3 Resene Blast Grey variants are not prone to colour fade. For other colours you can use a coat of Resene Clearcoat UVS to give extended colour durability.

The metallic top coat needs to be applied over an appropriately primed substrate and with a solid basecoat colour to match the metallic colour tinted in Resene Lumbersider.

February 2018

Q. I am using Resene FX Metallic paint over a black ceramic glaze. Is it ok as it is a rough glaze and the metallic paint kind of sticks in the grooves?

A. The topcoat will not have good adhesion to a glazed ceramic surface. We recommend Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer as the adhesion primer in this instance.

February 2018

Q. Is Lumbersider suitable to use for a front door? Or should I rather use an enamel product?

A. We do not recommend using Resene Lumbersider for joinery, for these areas we recommend Resene waterborne enamel paint such as Resene Lustacryl.

February 2018

Q. Which of the Resene wood stain products are suitable for use on hardwood flooring? We've got a 1930s bungalow and under the carpet is tongue-in-groove hardwood flooring. We're DIY novices but would like to sand back this flooring, apply a stain, and then seal. Which products would you suggest?

A. Resene Colorwood stain is the only interior stain we recommend, then topcoat with three coats of Resene Aquaclear.

February 2018

Q. I am building a new house to be clad with Linea® weatherboard, 150 x 25 bevel back. It comes pre-primed from the factory on the face and bottom edge with a factory-applied acrylic basecoat. The topcoat is going to be Resene Lumbersider in Resene Black CoolColour. Please advise what is/are the Resene recommended undercoat(s).

A. We recommend Resene Concrete Primer.

February 2018

Q. I recently just bought some Resene Colorwood Wood Stain. I just trialed it on a scrap piece of wood and the stain was really dark almost like slightly watered down paint. It looks as though it’s so dark you can’t actually see the wood markings. Can you thin the stain down with water, or is there a specific product I need?

A. Suggest you use Resene Colorwood Reducing Base (this is a clear) rather than water for colour dilution.

February 2018

Q. I have painted our roof with Resene All Black CoolColour. I still have some left is it alright to paint the Hardiplank® on the walls with it? They have previously been painted.

A. In theory yes, but application of a very dark colour over an existing paint system can stress the existing paint and cause delamination which is not the fault of the new paint.

The application of the Resene CoolColour™ version of the colour over a white basecoat such as Resene Quick Dry will reduce but not eliminate the potential for delamination.

February 2018

Q. I have a commercial property built in 2012 using tilt slab concrete that was painted at that time. The problematic paint finish is on cooler shady side of a wall. The paint finish that has broken down is all flaky and falling off. I would like a remedy to fix please.

A. The most likely cause was a failure to remove the release agent from the wall prior to painting. You will need to strip the existing wall paint, high pressure waterblasting is usually effective then clean the wall down and apply a coat of Resene Concrete Seal 3 in1 and finish with two coats of Resene X-200.

The other possibility is water getting in behind the paint layer but this is unusual.

February 2018

Q. How and where should I store unused roof paint for later use?

A. Store in a cool area that is not subject to much temperature variation. If a can has been opened then despite correct storage conditions there may be bacterial growth in the can, the bacteria can be introduced from the air or application equipment.

February 2018

Q. I have floor tiles in my kitchen and dining area; they are in good condition but are not a great colour. Do you have a product l could use to paint them?

A. The following system can be used; ensure the tiles are clean and free of grease/oil residues then apply Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer (this only needs to be a thin coat and will not achieve opacity over the laminate colour). Allow to cure for 48 hours then apply two coats of Resene Walk-on  and finish with a coat of Resene Concrete Wax.

The paint system will take at least 5 days to develop adhesion and harden, full cure requires a month. The painted surface will not have the hardness properties of the original tiled surface.

February 2018

Q. What can we use to clean the paintwork in our house? At present we use water and sugar soap, but wondered if there is anything else you would recommend?

A. For interior paintwork we recommend Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner. For exterior paintwork we recommend Resene Paint Prep and Housewash.

February 2018

Q. We are about to paint new Linea® weatherboards, on an addition to our house. Should I undercoat first?

A. Our system for new Linea® is a coat of Resene Concrete Primer and two coats of Resene Sonyx 101.

We recommend application of the Resene CoolColour™ version of the topcoat colour, if using dark colours.

February 2018

Q. I wish to paint polyurethaned rimu scotia. Is there a paint that can be used without removing the polyurethane first?

A. Yes Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer, note a light sand will always be beneficial prior to applying the Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer.

February 2018

Q. Last year we built a garage extension onto our home. This was clad in weatherboard and we painted it using Resene Quarter Masala - an excellent match to the block stonework on the house.

When we had the final inspection done, this was rejected as the colour apparently has a LRV which is too low (24) and were told to paint it a lighter colour - something with an LRV of 50 or more. This is something of a disappointment as the colour match is so good.

My understanding is that this dark colour could cause warping and splitting to the weatherboards. Is there anything that can be done to argue that the colour will not cause any undue effect in its situation? The only wall that gets a significant amount of sunlight is on the western side (afternoon). The eastern side is the side with the garage door, so only has short runs of weatherboard and is shaded by trees for a good part of the morning anyway. The southern side obviously gets only a small amount of light, and the northern side is the side integrated into the house.

Obviously, if at all possible, I'm trying to avoid having to repaint the garage again. I understand that the Quarter Masala is available as a CoolColour (had I anticipated this problem, I would have used it) but will this be a viable solution - and can it be retrospectively applied without having to strip off the existing coats?

A. This is a common problem and stems from the cladding supplier’s recommendation for colour based on LRV, LRV is a measure of reflection of visible light. Given this, the LRV of a Resene CoolColour™ version of a given colour, is the same as the LRV of the non-cool version. The heat reflection of a colour is measured by TSR, total solar reflection which is measure of reflection of near infra-red, heat radiation. The TSR of the Resene CoolColour version of a colour is always greater than the TSR of the same colour, made using non-cool technology. However, Resene CoolColours do not render the surface cool to touch.

Yes, Resene Quarter Marsala is available in a Resene CoolColour formulation and can be applied over the existing Resene waterborne paint, as long as the existing paint is sound, clean and chalk free.

February 2018

Q. I am looking for paint, suitable to paint over a Butynol style roof.

A. Scrub the Butynol down with Resene Paint Prep and Housewash diluted and used to label directions. Apply a coat of Resene Membrane Primer and two coats of Resene Lumbersider or Resene Sonyx 101, the latter topcoat will have a longer time till the onset of surface chalking. The system is suitable for roofing but not for guttering and will not restore a failure in the Butynol to achieve a watertight membrane.

February 2018

Q. Could you please recommend what undercoat I should use? I have an exterior concrete block wall that is about 35 years old and has never been painted before. The base does get a small amount of water seepage.

A. Check that all pointing is sound, treat any areas of mould/algae infestation with Resene Moss & Mould Killer diluted and used to label directions, then scrub down using Resene Paint Prep and Housewash diluted and used to label directions.

When the block work is dried out, apply a saturation coat of Resene Sureseal and follow with three coats of Resene X-200.

Note: this system is not suitable for a back filled retaining wall.

February 2018

Q. I am re-plastering an internal concrete room, which was built in 1915, so it is old concrete without all the additives. I have been told I should paint it with a breathable paint, any suggestions?

A. All waterborne paints breathe, that is they allow water vapour to pass through the film. So to achieve for an interior concrete plaster wall, you could look to apply a coat of Resene Concrete Primer and two coats of Resene Zylone Sheen.

February 2018

Q. I have a flat roofed house by the sea. The roof is covered in a black bituminous torch-on product which is in good condition. Several years ago the roof was painted with some type of aluminium paint. This paint is generally in good condition but there are patches where is has powdered off to expose the torch-on. I wish to clean and then repaint the entire roof. Please tell what primer/undercoat and top coat product I am best to use which adheres to both the black torch-on and the remaining aluminium paint. I want the new topcoat to again be an aluminium colour.

A. The aluminium paint is more than likely similar to Resene Silvalusta. These finishes can only be over coated with the same paint type and can't be over coated with standard waterborne decorative paints.

February 2018

Q. Which paint is best to use for a first coat on a new particle board floor? We already have the Resene Broadwall Wallboard Sealer, but we're wondering if the Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat would be better.

A. If applying a solid paint colour then Resene Quick Dry is the primer/undercoat to use.

February 2018

Q. I have a kitchen wooden floor that I would like to have painted white and then coated with polyurethane. Could you please advise what type of floor paint is most appropriate? I would like something durable - I have had suggestions like Resene Lumbersider or Resene Enamacryl.

Also, what would be appropriate polyurethane to use over paint and are there any specific instructions when using polyurethane over painted floors?

Currently it’s got Resene Lumbersider. It keeps getting dirty and hard to mop so we thought if we have it repainted and polyurethaned it would make it easier to clean.

A. If you are going to paint it white then apply a polyurethane clear then this may alter the white to a more cream colour. Resene Lustacryl would be a harder wearing white paint and easier to clean as it is a higher gloss level; you could then apply a coat of Resene Concrete Wax over the Resene Lustacryl basecoat colour and not change the whiteness.

February 2018

Q. We are moving to a house owned by smokers who smoked inside. After cleaning the walls and ceilings, what would be the best type of Resene paint (and prep product if necessary) to use on the walls? We would really like to use environmentally-friendly paints and we would like a white, matte finish.

A. You will need to apply a stain sealer, Resene Sureseal is our first recommendation but this is a solventborne sealer, the alternative is a coat of Resene StainLock which is a low VOC waterborne sealer.

Then apply two coats of Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen for walls and Resene SpaceCote Flat or Resene Ceiling Paint for ceilings. For bathroom ceilings use Resene SpaceCote Flat.

February 2018

Q. I have some Resene Deep Purple stain. I want to apply it to a skateboard that I have now sanded down. Unfortunately, it already had a green stain applied to it. How would I go about re-staining it to be purple instead of green? Can I just apply a few layers of Resene Deep Purple right over top of the green staining? Or is there something else I should do?

A. Stains are semi-transparent and this will always change the colour if another stain of a very different colour shade is applied over an existing stain colour. You would need to sand off the entire green stain colour to achieve your deep purple colour with the new stain colour.

February 2018

Q. What is the best paint for a wood doorstep?

A. A two pack polyurethane such as Resene Uracryl 402 or Resene Uracryl 403 applied over a compatible primer.

February 2018

Q. I want to paint some newly made raw pine furniture, white. What type of finish do you recommend? I don't want it to feel chalky to touch afterwards, but don't want a super shine to it either. It is to match a bed I have previously purchased, that was already painted.

A. Prime using Resene Quick Dry then apply two coats of Resene Lustacryl.

February 2018

Q. We are in the process of painting the exterior of our house with Resene Silver Chalice. The new weatherboards are pre-primed and the corner soakers are stainless steel. Can you please advise what we should do and what product to use for priming the stainless steel soakers, prior to topcoat?

A. Clean down with Resene Roof and Metal Wash diluted and used to label directions, then prime with Resene Galvo One.

February 2018

Q. I have a very old and rusty roof and want to make it look good as we are selling up.

A. Apply a full coat of Resene Galvo-Prime metal primer and then finish with two coats of Resene Summit Roof.

February 2018

Q. I have an old sideboard that has a dark stain on it. Do I need to strip it back to wood before using your furniture stains? I am thinking a white stain. It is rimu apparently.

A. Yes, as stains are semi-transparent and the base colour will change the colour of the over stain.

March 2018

Q. I want to paint some tyres for children at my school, to use as planters in our vegetable garden. What should I use to paint them with?

A. Scrub down using Resene Paint Prep and Housewash diluted and used to label directions. Then when dry, apply a coat of Resene Membrane Primer and finish with two coats of Resene Lumbersider.

Use a Resene testpot colour if you want to add colour details/designs to the base colour.

March 2018

Q. What paint system should we use for timber cladding on coastal exposure zone D, 270m from the open ocean? The claddings are all new. Shadowclad® will be Natural Texture H3.1 and will be painted a mid-grey colour. The decking will be oiled.

A. For the cladding, apply a coat of Resene Wood Primer, a coat of Resene Quick Dry primer undercoat and finish with two coats of the Resene CoolColour™ version of the colour, tinted in Resene Sonyx 101 semi-gloss.

For the decking use Resene Woodsman Wood Oil stain. In that location the stain may need an annual maintenance coat.

March 2018

Q. What is your recommended ‘black’ to use as the backdrop in retail applications to highlight product?

A. Standard Resene Black.

March 2018

Q. Can Fireshield 1FR be applied over existing polyurethaned timber?

A. Yes, as long as the existing polyurethaned timber is sound, clean and thoroughly sanded.

March 2018

Q. I want to paint the exterior of the house we have just had built. The exterior I want to paint is Firth Devonstone bricks. Can you please advise if this needs to be sealed first before painting or can it be painted straight on?

A. Use a primer coat of Resene Concrete Primer and two coats of Resene Sonyx 101 or Resene Lumbersider.

March 2018

Q. I want to paint rocks and pebbles in the garden. What paint do I use?

A. Most people use Resene testpots which are made from products such as Resene Lumbersider (which is our most popular exterior paint) and Resene FX Metallic (exterior and interior use).

If you apply a white primer, such as Resene Quick Dry first, this will help the bright colours look brighter.

Most rocks are best coated all over and then the design painted on, for a consistent finish.

If you want you can do a final clear finish in Resene Clearcoat UVS, which helps protect brighter colours, or the Resene Lumbersider can be left as is (no clear finish needed).

March 2018

Q. I want to paint a brick fireplace surround in my lounge. Can you please advise what prep and paint types would be best? The surface doesn't get very hot when the fire is burning.

A. Apply a seal coat of Resene Sureseal and two coats of Resene Lusta-Glo.

March 2018

Q. We have Nuralite's Nuraply 3P Bitumix membrane on a concrete deck, and we want to put a primer on it and then put a topcoat over it. It needs to be UV paint and someone has said it needs to be greater than LRV- 40.

A. Apply a prime coat of Resene Membrane Primer, then two coats of Resene Walk-on.

March 2018

Q. We have recently waterproofed our balcony using fibreglass but it is slippery. What, if any of your products, would be suitable to put over this surface to provide a non-slip surface? No extra coat of paint was applied to the surface, only the fibreglass, which has a grey colour. There is a slight texture of the fibreglass, but overall the surface remains quite smooth.

A. Wash down using Resene Paint Prep and Housewash diluted and used to label directions. Lightly sand to provide a mechanical profile for the new paint system.

Apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry primer undercoat and finish with two coats of Resene Walk-on.

March 2018

Q. Could you tell me how much is the maximum quantity of Resene Colorwood Enhance White that can be added per litre of Resene Aquaclear?

A. A maximum of two Resene Colorwood Enhance colour pottles per litre.

March 2018

Q. Can I use acrylic undercoat over (probable) oil based wooden trim?

A. Yes, after a clean down and a sand to provide a mechanical key for the new paint.

March 2018

Q. Which type of paint is suitable for an exterior wooden door? The paint is for an old tongue and groove door, so I would assume the door was originally, oil based coated. I have wiped the topcoat with isopropyl alcohol and the paint has softened, and the white undercoat is starting to appear. It looks like only one topcoat which would be easy to sand off. The door will be exposed and facing north, the colour will be red.

A. If the paint is softened or removed by IPA, then it will be a conventional waterborne paint.

The door and colour will be subject to the highest level of exposure, so be prepared for a more regular maintenance to maintain aesthetics. Sand the existing paint and then apply a full coat of Resene Quick Dry primer undercoat and finish with two coats of tinted Resene Enamacryl.

March 2018

Q. What's a recommended primer for repainting aged oregon timber? I wonder if this timber has characteristics similar to matai and totara. My mother says that paint never sticks to it, because of the oils. So far I've used Resene TimberLock only on the bare timber. Does this need further priming? If so, should I use my Resene Quick Dry undercoat or is oil based Resene Wood Primer what's recommended? I am using Resene Lumbersider as the topcoat.

A. Resene Wood Primer is our recommendation, however if the timber is severely weathered then pre-treat with Resene TimberLock then apply the Resene Wood Primer.

March 2018

Q. Do you have a product similar to chalk paint that I can paint furniture in a low sheen finish?

A. Yes Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen or Resene SpaceCote Flat.

March 2018

Q. I want to improve the look, and change the colour of old terracotta tiles around a swimming pool. Would paving paint be suitable for this application? The tiles are old (20 years +) and don’t appear to be glazed. They are mortared together and, generally, in good condition.

A. Scrub down using Resene Paint Prep and Housewash diluted and used to label directions. When dry apply a seal coat of Resene Sureseal and finish with two coats of Resene Walk-on.

March 2018

Q. Which type of paint should I use for exterior house paint on Hardiplank® with a grain look? Should it be Resene Sonyx 101 or Resene Lumbersider?

A. You can use either. Prepare the existing paint by scrubbing down with Resene Paint Prep and Housewash diluted and used to label directions. Spot prime any bare substrate, with Resene Sureseal then apply two coats of topcoat.

March 2018

Q. I want to paint my corrugated iron roof. It is in fairly good condition, except for some areas where a bit of rust is showing through. After waterblasting and cleaning the roof first, is there a paint that I can put over the rust that will seal it? Then do I go straight over that, with the roof paint and what is the best roof paint to use?

A. Ensure all loose rust is removed using a 3M Rust and Paint Removal Disc, then spot prime corroded areas with Resene GP Metal Primer. If close to the sea, apply two coats of the primer then finish with two coats of Resene Summit Roof.

March 2018

Q. I want to paint my chipboard floor, which being late 70s/early 80s era is finished in a gloss/polyurethane (I assume) finish. What paint and preparation is recommended?

A. Degrease using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner following label directions, then thoroughly sand to provide a mechanical key for the new paint system. Apply a prime coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat and finish with two coats of Resene Lustacryl. The new paint system will take at least seven days to develop good hardness and adhesion.

March 2018

Q. I am enquiring whether Resene Lumbersider paint is suitable for wooden decking.

A. Resene Lumbersider has been used as a waterborne decking paint for many years. It is based on a conventional non cross linking resin system, so does not have the wear resistance of products such as Resene Walk-on but for most domestic situations, it does give good wear. Prep and priming requirements will vary with timber type and condition.

March 2018

Q. I am looking for a suitable primer/sealer and topcoat for a MDF bookcase that is expected to see a lot of use. The topcoat needs to be resistant to scuffing/scratching from books being dragged across the shelves when being removed/replaced. I want a semi-gloss finish, and I have no objection to solvent based paints. The MDF edges are exposed. I need a primer/sealer that will be readily absorbed to toughen the edges.

A. Resene Quick Dry primer undercoat is the only sealer we recommend for MDF. If the edges are very porous apply two coats of Resene Quick Dry then apply two coats of Resene Lusta-Glo solventborne enamel.

March 2018

Q. Is your Resene Swimming Pool Paint toxic to fish in a fish pond?

A. We have found that if the Resene Swimming Pool Paint is well cured and then washed 5+ times with clean water, totally emptying each time, that there are no remaining products that are toxic to fish remaining when the pool is finally refilled. We always suggest that a single fish is introduced and observed for at least 24 hours, before adding additional fish.

March 2018

Q. I intend to create a mural on a wall. Tagging has been a problem over a long period of time and the wall is covered in 'anti-tag' paint with varying degrees of thickness. Could you provide an outline of the products I would need to prepare the surface, execute the mural and preserve the final product?

A. As long as Resene waterborne colours are used, two coats of Resene Uracryl GraffitiShield can then be applied.

While there are a wide range of anti-graffiti systems available, we use the term to reference film forming coating systems from which graffiti can be removed using dedicated cleaners.

While hard and tough the surface will not resist gouging with sharp objects etc. However most pens, paint and spray tagging of walls coated with a Resene anti-graffiti coating can be removed using Resene Graffiti Cleaner with minimal effort and bother.

Resene has two systems that can be readily used as anti-graffiti systems:

Both systems have been developed for brush and roller application, thereby removing the need for spray application.
Step 1: Allow the basecoat paint to cure for at least 48 hours.
Step 2: Thoroughly wash down with fresh water and allow it to dry.

Protection against tagging is usually only required for accessible areas and usually restricted to a maximum height of 3 metres above a given access point.

The smoother the surface the more easily graffiti is able to be removed. If the surface is heavily textured, graffiti, especially from spray cans, will not be able to be removed from recesses in the surface. This is a design issue rather than a coating issue.

The higher the gloss level of the clear anti-graffiti topcoat the easier graffiti can be removed. Flat anti-graffiti clears are available however their effectiveness is reduced. They do have a place however, when used on stone; a flat finish has more natural looking aesthetics. Full gloss coatings also take longer to chalk, the ease of removal of graffiti decreases as the surface chalks so the higher the gloss level the longer it will resist the anti-graffiti cleaner solution.

Resene anti-graffiti clears can only be applied to acrylic basecoat paint. If available it is always prudent to use the Uracryl UVS (ultra violet stabilised) clear formulation, when clear coating a base colour which is prone to fading.

Graffiti is removed by wiping the affected area with Resene Graffiti Cleaner, scrubbing with a stiff nylon brush can assist removal. Once removed, hose or wash the area down with fresh water. Experts strongly advise that graffiti is removed as soon as practicable.

Repeated cleaning of graffiti will ultimately generate the requirement to reinstate the clear surface.

March 2018

Q. I have sanded the weatherboards on our house down to the bare wood; they are rimu and weathered. I intend to use Resene TimberLock prior to painting with Resene Quick Dry and then a black Resene CoolColour topcoat. I'll spray with Resene Moss & Mould Killer. The question is, do I then wash down with Resene Timber and Deck Wash or Resene Paint Prep and House Wash?

A. We suggest you use Resene Paint Prep and Housewash for a painted surface.

March 2018

Q. I need a paint that can go behind a free standing fire, on the wall over HardiGroove® lining.

A. Apply a seal coat of Resene Sureseal and two coats of Resene Lusta-Glo enamel topcoat. However, there may be yellowing over time and the paint system is not deemed as fire resistant/retardant.

March 2018

Q. We have decided to paint our corrugated tin house roof in Resene Nullarbor. The sales assistant said we could have this colour in a roof-suitable paint. She also said the same paint would be fine to paint the wooden fascia/barge boards. Believing in a do it once do it right mantra, my question would be 'is there a better choice of paint type (same colour) for the wooden components?

A. Resene Summit Roof can be used as the topcoat system for other substrates, as long as they are primed with the appropriate priming system.

March 2018

Q. I’m a painter and I’m wondering why I seem to have to strain some, as there are bits and pieces through the pail. The paint is new!

A. Plastic pails can develop a skin and we agree that this is an annoying feature for an end user. Skin development occurs as a result of storage at elevated temperatures and has been more of an issue this summer. It can happen if paint is left in a hot vehicle or similar. Resene formulates our paints at higher solids content than other paint providers (paint thickness is not an indication of solids content, only the amount of thickener added) and this exacerbates the skinning potential. The issue rarely occurs over the cooler months. The skin can be removed when the pail is first opened but if the skin is broken up, filtering is recommended.

March 2018

Q. Is it necessary to paint over top of the magnetic paint or can it be left as the topcoat?

A. Resene Magnetic Magic paint must be overcoated to avoid surface rusting occurring. You can choose a topcoat colour that is close to the Resene Magnetic Magic paint colour for overcoating.

March 2018

Q. Is it possible to use enamel paint over anaglypta wallpaper?

A. Not the norm now, but in theory can be done as long as the paper is sealed with Resene Sureseal.

March 2018

Q. What is best practice for painting a wet area? We have oil based pigment sealer so do we continue with oil based paint or can we switch to water based?

A. There is no definitive answer to your question. Resene Sureseal is always specified as the seal coat for GIB® Aqualine. You can then continue with a solventborne system, Resene Enamel Undercoat and two coats of Resene Lusta-Glo or a waterborne system of a coat of Resene Quick Dry and two coats of Resene Lustacryl Kitchen & Bathroom.

Surfactant leaching can occur with the waterborne system if the room is not well ventilated, and/or the paint is not allowed curing for 3-4 days before steam/water contact. This risk must be balanced against the issues associated with using solventborne paints. Resene has moved to using lower odour solvents, with very low aromatic content which does reduce the potential harm associated with solventborne paint. We find most customers tend to use waterborne enamel topcoats now.

March 2018

Q. We want to paint our new deck in non-skid deck paint. It needs to have grip to be code compliant for council to sign off as it leads to our front door. Is this paint code compliant? The wood we will be using for the treads is not kiln dried and therefore will contain moisture. How do we need to treat this i.e. undercoat/topcoat and can we paint before the wood is completely dry? The timber is 150 x 40 pine.

A. Apply a coat of Resene Wood Primer to the clean dry timber deck and then follow with two coats of Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path.

March 2018

Q. Our team of year 3/4 are taking part in our school art project this year. We want to paint rocks as part of a permanent display that will be placed in the garden here at our school. We want to use bright colours and a paint that will last the elements. Could you please advise me on what paint is suitable and what protection could be used onto the rocks before and after painting so they do not fade or peel?

A. There are a number ways that you can paint the stones. We normally recommend Resene Quick Dry primer undercoat then two coats of colour using a Resene testpot. For added protection you can choose to use Resene Clearcoat UVS. We suggest the entire stone area is painted. Alternatively apply two coats of a testpot colour if you want a quicker option.

March 2018

Q. I'm repainting two sides of a commercial property with Resene X-200. Each wall is approx. 150 square metres with half of each side being concrete block and the other half tilt slab. Waterblasting has peeled the existing paint off in some areas so in those areas we machine wire brushed the bare concrete and coated with Resene Sureseal pigmented sealer. Our problem is that the Resene Sureseal appears to soften and lift the existing paint. On examination it appears that there has been a high build undercoat applied to the concrete block before top coating and no undercoat on the tilt slab. The top coat used is a thick membrane paint similar to Resene X-200 and on the tilt slab it can be peeled away in large chunks but we really don't want to be stripping these walls completely if it can be helped so I'm reaching out to you for ideas? My only thought has been to carefully apply Resene Sureseal onto the bare areas without going onto the existing coating followed by a prime coat of Resene X-200 over the bare areas overlapping the edges of the existing coat followed by two coats of Resene X-200.

A. Waterblasting does result in a peeled edge under which a solvent-based paint can creep. Feathering off the edges of remaining paint can reduce this from occurring. The other possibility is that the existing paint is sensitive to the solvents in Resene Sureseal. Careful application of the Resene Sureseal to minimise the overlap may work. And yes, do overcoat the Resene Sureseal with Resene X-200 before applying the following full coats.

Q. We are placing a bitumen rubber waterproofing membrane on top of an older black butynol roof. We wish to use Resene X-200 paint to match the walls on top of this membrane. Is it acceptable to paint over the bitumen with the Resene X-200?

A. Apply a primer coat of Resene Membrane Primer then the Resene X-200.

March 2018

Q. We have a concrete block wall which has been painted and is now leaking. The leaks have been fixed. I need to know can we apply the Resene LimeLock to the painted wall or do we have to remove the paint before applying the lime block?

A. If the lime burn has caused the existing paint to flake/blister then you will need to remove the coating from these areas to then seal and topcoat. Spot prime bare concrete with Resene Sureseal then if an exterior wall spot prime the Resene Sureseal areas with Resene X-200 then apply two full coats of Resene X-200. If interior replace the Resene X-200 with Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen.

Q. If I want a semi-gloss finish, what LRV should I be looking at? I want to use it on a kitchen wall.

A.Resene Lustacryl would be the semi-gloss product to use. LRV, light reflectance value, is usually applied to exterior colours and not an interior colour scheme. We see no restriction on the LRV values for an interior colour scheme. In architecture, light reflectance value (LRV), is a measure of visible and usable light that is reflected from a surface when illuminated by a light source. The values are used by lighting designers to determine the number and type of light fixtures needed to provide proper lighting for interior spaces.

March 2018

Q. I have been asked to paint a sunroom floor. It is well stuck vinyl. I would like to know what primer and what topcoat I should use.

A. There are many vinyl flooring products. Painting can be successful but not always. The system we have used is, ensure the floor is clean especially from grease/oil and then apply a thin coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer and leave to dry for 24 hours then apply two coats of Resene Lustacryl. The system will take at least five days to develop adhesion and harden. However we cannot give any guarantees that this system will be successful with the floor you are dealing with.

March 2018

Q. I'd like to repaint a piece of furniture ending up with a soft chalky finish, black on the outside and white on the inside. Could you suggest a paint that would give me that result?

A. We recommend Resene SpaceCote Flat.

March 2018

Q. How can I remove waterborne paint marks from old anodised aluminium joinery?

A. If it’s old it can be very difficult. I suggest you try meths and a cloth. Can’t give an ironclad guarantee that the substrate will remain untouched, so it’s best to try it on an inconspicuous area first.

March 2018

Q. I was wondering if you had any advice, or a product that could be used to rejuvenate an old Decramastic roof?

A. Decramastic roofing tiles, also known as Decrabond or pressed metal tiles were widely used in New Zealand during the 1970s and 1980s. Made of galvanised steel with a bitumen overlay, the tiles were known for being lightweight and easily installed. Upon weathering the tiles will lose chip texture erosion of the bitumen base back to base metal which at the extreme will present with corrosion.

This specification will restore colour but not the original chip texture.

Step 1: Spot treat areas of heavy lichen infestation with Resene Moss & Mould Killer diluted 1:1 with water and leave for 48 hours before proceeding to Step 3.

Step 2: Treat areas of moss/lichen infestation a few weeks prior to the commencement of painting with a saturation coat of Resene Deep Clean diluted and used to label instructions. Resene Deep Clean is a slow release bio kill agent. Resene Deep Clean is best applied under overcast conditions to maximise wetting time.

Step 3: Wash down with water to remove all dirt, grease, moss and mould residue, dust, and other contaminants. Waterblasting is not recommended as this will result in the dislodgement of the chip. Allow the surface to dry thoroughly. Resene recommend that downpipes are disconnected during this process and that gutters are thoroughly cleaned out before reconnecting downpipes.

Step 4: All paint that is flaking or unsound must be removed by using mechanical methods, (3M Rust and Paint Removal Disc), chemical stripper or high pressure waterblasting taking care not to damage either the substrate or the surrounding areas. Remove all areas of white corrosion material and as much red rust as is practicable and all paint that is flaking or unsound must be removed by using mechanical methods, (3M Rust and Paint Removal Disc), chemical stripper or high pressure waterblasting taking care not to damage either the substrate or the surrounding areas. Where under-film corrosion is taking place the existing paint must first be removed and remove corrosion products taking care not to damage sound zinc coated areas. All paint edges must be feathered to a smooth finish. It is strongly recommended, that any badly rusted sections of galvanised steel be replaced.

Spot prime any bare metal or bitumen with Resene Galvo-Prime and apply two coats of Resene Summit Roof. Where there is red rusting; apply two coats of Resene Galvo-Prime to the prepared areas.

Q. I am looking for the best coating, to apply to a concrete basketball court we have just had installed on our property. The court is concrete and has only just been completed, so no weathering as yet. I see you have a range of coating for tennis courts and I would imagine this would be the same, but just want to check if there are any alternative options I should be looking at?

A. We recommend Resene Tennis Court Coating or Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path.

March 2018

Q. Our bathroom has a textured ceiling, which I think contains asbestos. There are a few cracks appearing from age. We can't afford to have the asbestos removed and I'm told as long as the asbestos is encapsulated, it is safe. Is there a sealant I could put on first and then paint over?

A. Use a saturation coat of Resene Sureseal.

March 2018

Q. Can you please advise the best exterior paint system, to use on a new cedar pergola? It is to be constructed from new, unweathered quarter sawn Canadian cedar timber; approx. 140x40mm. I want a low sheen finish in a dark colour.

A. Prime with Resene Wood Primer, then apply two coats of Resene Lumbersider tinted to the CoolColour™ version of the colour. Due to the potential for tannin bleed if waterborne primer is used, the primer has to be solventborne.

March 2018

Q. We painted our lounge using Resene Zylone Sheen after undercoating the walls with Resene Broadwall Sealer. We applied the undercoat over an existing acrylic painted area. In one place only the paint has bubbled and lifted, right down to the wallboard. It’s not a big area and the rest of the walls are fine. We plan to fix it by letting it dry entirely, then sanding back, applying a skim coat of plaster then more undercoat, then two more layers of Resene Zylone Sheen. We wonder why this loss of adhesion might have happened, and whether we are solving the problem properly.

The adhesion was lost between the original paint and the wall board. So the Resene undercoat and the Resene Zylone Sheen and whatever they used before, all lifted off. We aren't concerned about the Resene paint as we always use it and always will. It's why it might have happened and how to fix the current patch of bare wall and it’s quite small.

A. The issue seems to be the adhesion of the original paint system. Often application of a new paint system can highlight the weak adhesion situation. This is what I suggest is the case. Removal of the original paint system back to bare substrate is the only way to correct it.

March 2018

Q. I have got a standalone feature wall that will take 2.75 widths of grass cloth wallpaper. When you come in the front door you look straight at this wall. Should I begin hanging the paper from one side edge, or should I centre my first drop in the middle of the feature wall?

A. If I was doing this in my own home, I would start in the middle. However, it really comes down to your own style.

March 2018

Q. We want to use Resene Concrete Clear on a concrete block garage wall. Your data sheet suggests I should use Resene Solventborne Aquapel first, but the problem is that it is a bit of a job cleaning up spray gear. The data sheet also suggests Resene Concrete Clear gloss (diluted 10%) could serve as the first coat. I would prefer this idea - it would be OK?

It is clean exterior concrete block about five years old, recently waterblasted.

A. We have two clear coating options, Resene XC-700 which will give a weathertight system and Resene Concrete Clear, which is not designed to render blockwork weathertight.

The blockwork in both scenarios will need application of a saturation coat of Resene Solventborne Aquapel. This is to control possible efflorescence. Again in both scenarios, the mortar must be sound and flashing details functioning to design.

Alternatively if you are happy to have a pigmented finish you can use Resene X-200. The Resene X-200 system is recognised as a system to achieve a weathertight paint system for both new and old blockwork. If there are no signs or concerns re water ingress, then a standard low build waterborne paint system (two coats), such as Resene Hi-Glo, can be applied. This situation usually requires existing, sound painted blockwork. Application of the new paint will increase the film build of the total paint layer. Low build paint systems will not render new blockwork weathertight. In all cases, there must be sound pointing and flashings achieving what they were installed to do.

March 2018

Q. What can I use on native T+G timber flooring surfaces in areas exposed to water splash sealed?

A. The only Resene product we would offer for this application is four coats of Resene Polythane.

March 2018

Q. I need to paint over varnish, please advise what sealer or undercoat I should use.

A. We recommend Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer; apply a thin wet film and leave to cure for as long as possible without water/moisture contact before overcoating.

March 2018

Q. I painted my house last summer (Shadowclad®) using Resene Lumbersider CoolColour in Resene Gravel over Resene Quick Dry primer. I discovered pretty quickly vertical hairline cracks all over the surface of the boards, with white showing through.

A. Surface checking occurs with Shadowclad®, face checking occurs more quickly with application of dark colours. Resene CoolColour™s will reflect more heat than the same colour made using non cool pigments but will not stop the face checking of Shadowclad®. The face checks result from the normal swelling and shrinkage of wood, as it gains and loses moisture which is exacerbated by darker colours.

Shadowclad® state that these checks are superficial, being confined to the face veneer and do not alter the structural integrity of the ply cladding. Shadowclad® recommend repainting with a 100% acrylic exterior paint, such as Resene Lumbersider CoolColour, with a thorough working into the face checks with a brush.

March 2018

Q. Just following on from a conversation with a tech person and I had a query regarding your product. We want to use Resene Qristal Clear in flat finish on our timber floorboards for the entire house but I need to know if this will be ok for our wet rooms. I am wondering if this product is going to make the floor pass under the following act ‘Surfaces in wet areas must be impervious, easily cleaned, and have ventilation to meet conditions for health and safety.’ If not, do you have a product for natural looking floor boards that would do the job, or, failing that a paint that would suffice?

A.Resene Polythane (four coats) is the only product we offer for this application.

March 2018

Q. Can you please specify the correct Resene Imperite paint, to paint glass splashbacks?

A. We sell Resene Imperite IF 503 to the glass painting industry.

March 2018

Q. I've sanded our rimu weatherboards down to bare wood. I'm going to use Resene TimberLock and I think it would be best to apply the Resene TimberLock before filling in holes and cracks, prior to using Resene Quick Dry.

A. The long standing practice is to prime then fill. In this case allow the Resene TimberLock to dry for at least 48 hours, before filling or overcoating.

March 2018

Q. I have been advised to use a vinyl etch primer for bare aluminium spots (which I have purchased from Resene), then an oil based primer, and a high quality semi-gloss acrylic topcoat, to repaint a Lockwood home (advice from Lockwood for pre 1990 homes). Can you please advise the correct product names for the oil based primer and acrylic topcoat?

There is minor corrosion on one wall where there used to be a garage wall connected, and some small corrosion holes in the aluminium.

A. It is our experience that corrosion that is through the aluminium sheet is due to the timber treatment chemicals that were used at the time. This is difficult to repair but we have suggested sandable epoxy surfacers be used. We recommend a scrub down with Resene Paint Prep and Housewash, diluted and used to label directions. Then spot prime bare aluminium with Resene Galvo One and finish with two coats of Resene Sonyx 101.

Etch primers are the conventional primers for bare aluminium but can react with some paint finishes, hence our suggestion for the alternative primer.

March 2018

Q. I have a traffic guard deck over my garage and I’d like to paint it as I’m not a fan of the colour. What sort of paint should I use? It doesn’t appear to be overcoated at all. I can still clearly see the fibres of the traffic guard but I’d like to go to a mid-strength grey as opposed to the very, very light grey it currently is.

A. There are a number of fiberglass reinforced acrylic coating systems, used to waterproof pedestrian decks (plywood or fibre cement construction) particularly where there is a habitable space below.

Typically the system will continue to perform its primary function as a weather-tight membrane. However, the surface will weather and chalk over time, depending on the degree of UV light it receives and the amount and nature of the surface foot traffic and repainting is generally required to restore aesthetics. As a consequence of weathering, fibreglass strands can become exposed due to erosion of the surface and the overall appearance becomes unacceptable.

Resene X-400 is an ultra-high build membrane coating and has been recommended to improve the overall film build of the system and seal off any exposed fiberglass strands.

This specification does not alter the weathertightness of the original decking system, and is not suitable to restore weathertightness if the original membrane system is failing. Repainting is generally straightforward unless there is cracking and/or delamination of the membrane system which can occur as a result of substrate movement or water ingress. If this is the case, or if there are water ingress issues, please contact Resene Technical services for advice.

Step 1: Treat moss and mould with Resene Moss & Mould Killer; use as directed on the  label.

Note I: For heavy infestations, an additional application(s) may be needed.

Step 2: Thoroughly scrub down with Resene Paint Prep and Housewash diluted and used to label directions to remove all dirt, dust, grease, any moss and mould residue, chalk, cobwebs and other contaminants. Alternatively waterblast up to 3000psi

Step 3: Thoroughly scrape and sand to remove all loose and flaking paint and to provide a good key for subsequent coats. Then roll on two coats of Resene X-400 and overcoat with two coats of Resene Walk-on.

March 2018

Q. I have painted exterior windows. I prepared well, and used tape around the window to get a clear edge, about 2mm. My first coat was solvent-based primer followed by two topcoats of water-based exterior paint. I removed the tape carefully shortly after the paint dried. It came off well and left a clear edge. Several weeks later I cleaned the windows and the paint on the glass is easily washed off or just falls off. It hasn't adhered, so why is this?

A. The wet adhesion of waterborne enamels to glass is not as strong as wet adhesion of traditional solventborne enamel.

If the primer was applied to the glass, and has adhered then the topcoating with Resene Enamacryl  should also adhere. The only suggestion I have, is that the primer overlap is possibly less than the topcoat.

If you are repainting, I suggest that you may look to change to Resene Lustacryl as the topcoat.

March 2018

Q. I want to paint timber floors with a border then white wash them and protect them. What would be the best products to do this?

A. You can use Resene Lumbersider then apply a stain coat of Resene Colorwood in Resene Rock Salt then clear coat (three coats) with Resene Aquaclear. If you want to increase the degree of blonding you can add Resene Colorwood Enhance White to the coats of Resene Aquaclear. You may decide that addition of the Resene Colorwood Enhance White is only required for the first coat of Resene Aquaclear if this achieves the level of blonding that you find acceptable.

April 2018

Q. Can I use your roof paint (permanent green) on outside wooden window sills? They have been sealer undercoated.

A. Yes, as long as the substrate has been appropriately prepared and primed.

April 2018

Q. I am painting a new bathroom ceiling (white) that has just been plasterboard stopped. What paint should I use on this?

A. Assuming that the ceiling is stopped GIB® Aqualine, apply a seal coat of Resene Sureseal and an undercoat of Resene Quick Dry and then there are two possible topcoat options - Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen Kitchen & Bathroom or two coats of Resene Room Velvet.

April 2018

Q. We have been told that Resene may have a product that can be used over bitumen and then painted.

A. Clean down to remove surface contaminants using Resene Heavy Duty Paint Prep and Oil Remover following label directions. Apply a prime coat of Resene Membrane Primer, and then finish with two coats of Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path for a foot trafficable finish.

April 2018

Q. For the Resene Wintergrade paint range, is the paint still low odour paint, or does the quick drying use a quick evaporation material, that has a stronger odour?

A. Both the standard and wintergrade versions have the characteristic waterborne paint odour. The wintergrade version is not simply a change in volatile organic compounds, but a change to a resin system that allows film formation at lower temperatures.

April 2018

Q. What is the best sealer paint to use on plaster over poly? This is a repaint.

A. If there is bio growth present, treat with Resene Moss & Mould Killer diluted and used to label instructions. When dry apply a saturation coat of Resene Sureseal.

April 2018

Q. We installed a new fence with H1 treated timber 12 months ago. I whitewashed with Resene Woodsman Whitewash but now grey mould is coming through under the whitewash. What is the fix?

A. Mould is not the same as rot, treatments such as H1.2 are not the strongest (compared to say H3.2) and are there to slow down/reduce the ability of rot in timber... not mould.

I have not seen it happen this fast before, though pine does have high resin and food/sugar content (food for mould) and as mould spores are everywhere they will therefore be on the surface before the stain is even applied. The mould defence in the stain does not last forever, so will ‘wear out’ and also become less effective over time. Regular maintenance needs to be carried out on all stained timber, I suggest using Resene Moss & Mould Killer or the better way is the slow acting process, maintenance spray with Resene Deep Clean product.

April 2018

Q. I am about to start sanding and repainting my exterior window and door joinery. What primer/undercoat should I be using before I paint it the new colour? And once I have prepared the window is it just primer/undercoat and then two coats of the new paint? The new colour will be quite light in colour. The timber is rimu.

A. Prime using Resene Wood Primer, then a coat of Resene Quick Dry undercoat and two coats of a waterborne enamel topcoat such as Resene Lustacryl.

April 2018

Q. I have a courtyard with terracotta coloured, stamped concrete paving. The colour has worn off patchily, exposing rough grey concrete in some areas, while sheltered areas retain the terracotta colour. I want to repaint it grey. Answers to other queries, sometimes recommend Resene Sureseal followed by Resene Walk-on paint, and sometimes Resene Concrete Stain, so I'm confused as to the best approach in my situation. The stain doesn't sound as if it will provide the colour cover I need.

A. Resene Concrete Stain is a semi-transparent stain for concrete, not a solid colour. Resene Sureseal is the recommended primer for bare concrete, where a solid paint finish such as Resene Walk-on is to be used.

April 2018

Q. I spilt a half pot of exterior enamel paint, outside on the tarseal while I was painting. I decided to leave the clean up to the end and thought I'd waterblast it off. Unfortunately it won't budge. Do you have any helpful, relatively cheap ideas to remove this please?

A. We recommend you overcoat the affected area with a couple of coats of Resene Blacktop driveway coating.

April 2018

Q. I am repainting my living room ceiling which is 15 years old and there are some peeling and cracked areas. I have scraped these to an area of 8-10 inches across. It is bare plasterboard here. Can you recommend what surface prep is needed? I guess a sealer, fill any imperfections, then two coats topcoat either, Resene Ceiling Flat or Resene Earthsense Ceiling paint. What sealer do you recommend?

A. Sand the entire ceiling and spot prime any bare substrate with Resene Sureseal. If this is not a wet area, then you can roll a coat of Resene Broadwall Surface Prep and Seal over the entire ceiling before applying two coats of a waterborne ceiling paint. The need to apply a stopping compound to areas of flaking will depend upon how noticeable the difference between the feathered edge and the bare substrate is. If you do need to apply a stopping material, then sand flush and reseal the stopped area with Resene Sureseal.

April 2018

Q. Do I have to sand laminated kitchen cabinets or varnished door frames, before using Resene Vinyl Etch?

A. For the best adhesion yes, ensure the laminate is completely degreased using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner then wet sand using 400 grade wet and dry paper, wipe clean then apply the Resene Vinyl Etch.

April 2018

Q. I am building a prefab concrete, solar passive home. I need to paint a bedroom, laundry and kitchen (including splashback/wet areas as I’m not tiling). What primer/undercoat of yours, should I use and then which paint? I want to use white and it needs to be washable. The walls are concrete with the doors and trims, timber.

I need low sheen for walls, high gloss for doors/trims and low/no VOCs.

A. Use Resene Aquapoxy semi-gloss for walls and Resene Aquapoxy for Flooring semi-gloss for floors. To increase heat uptake, you may want to consider painting the floors a shade of grey.

April 2018

Q. What product should I use to paint over dark varnished hardwood panelling in an old villa?

A. Degrease using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner then apply a thin coat ofResene SpaceCote Low Sheen and leave to cure with good ventilation for 48 hours before overcoating with Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen or Resene Lustacryl. Note that Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer is not formulated to achieve a high wet film thickness or opacity.

April 2018

Q. We have old 1970 style aluminium window frames that I want to paint on the inside. I have bought Resene Vinyl Etch adhesion primer and would like to know what I can use over this as topcoat?

A. We suggest Resene Lustacryl for topcoating. There may be a lingering solvent odour following application of the Resene Vinyl Etch primer. After application of the etch primer, maintain ventilation and leave the primer untopcoated for as long as possible, as topcoating can delay loss of the odours material from the primer.

April 2018

Q. I am painting a cedar window frame; the timber is in good condition. Should I use Resene TimberLock under the Resene Wood Primer or can I just use Resene Wood Primer?

A. If the cedar is sound, not weathered then there is no real need for the Resene TimberLock but it can be used for a belts and braces approach.

April 2018

Q. What is your recommended paint system for a decramastic roof? The roof has already been waterblasted at 3000PSI and mould killer sprayed. No rust is present but there are some bare steel patches where grit has worn off.

A. We recommend a full coat of Resene Galvo-Prime and then two coats of Resene Summit Roof (use the Resene CoolColour™ version of the colour if a dark colour is required).

We have no system to restore the original texture to a Decramastic roof.

April 2018

Q. I have a container of Beeline premixed wallpaper paste that was opened a few months ago. Is it still okay to use?

A. Our wallpaper supplier said it can depend on how it’s stored. If the bucket was partially used the air in the bucket can change the viscosity of the paste. It can become very watery and this would not be usable. If the paste is the same consistency of when it was first used it should be fine to use. If there is any doubt, dispose of the paste and use a fresh container.

April 2018

Q. I have just purchased a house where the double garage has been lined with particle board or something similar and it appears to have been painted with a coat of flat polyurethane. Can I paint over this as the garage is quite dark? Not sure if I would have to lightly sand first. I don’t want to go to too much trouble as it is only the garage.

A. Ensure the surface is clean, no grease oil etc then sand, dust off and apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry then finish with two coats of Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen.

April 2018

Q. Is Resene Colorwood Whitewash stain, safe (in terms of humans sleeping in the room) to use on interior timbers? We are building a sleep out/cabin at a beach section and lining it with ply but I’m not sure whether the ply is treated or not.

A. If you are referring to Resene Colorwood Whitewash overcoated with Resene Aquaclear, then definitely yes.

Once the system has dried (ensure good ventilation), there is no residual solvent release to be concerned about. Both products are low VOC (volatile organic compound) and the VOC is usually released within the first 48 hours with good ventilation.

April 2018

Q. I put down a brand new Purple Heart deck in late October. I was advised to let it weather, to get rid of the purple colour and most importantly the continuous sap. It is now April and there is still some sap coming out in some places.

How can I remove the remaining sap with a product, and then put on deck cleaner before a stain? I would prefer stain as don't want flaking paint later on.

A. Scrub down using Resene Timber and Deck Wash diluted and used to label directions.

April 2018

Q. I am painting the interior of the house and I would like to know, what is the hardest white Resene product for painting the skirting boards? The rest of the doors and frames, I have painted with Resene Quick Dry undercoat and Resene Lustacryl semi-gloss waterborne enamel topcoat.

A. The only 'harder' finish is Resene Lusta-Glo but the white is not as white as Resene Lustacryl and as a solventborne enamel, Resene Lusta-Glo will yellow over time.

April 2018

Q. I want an opinion on the finish of ceilings. We get a lot of flies and therefore, fly marks on the ceilings. The ceilings in our last house were painted in a flat paint, which showed marks when wiped. It was repainted in Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen, which was great for wiping. Our new house has a large, high vaulted ceiling which the builders tell me will show reflection if is painted in a low sheen. Do you think this would be the case? I would hate to paint it in a flat again and have all the fly marks.

A. If there is light falling across the painted ceiling, then this is referred to as critical lighting condition and yes, any non-flat paint may result in surface imperfections being seen. Resene SpaceCote Flat would be the only flat paint that will not burnish upon wiping to clean.

April 2018

Q. I have a Lockwood style home, with natural timber tongue and groove style walls inside. I want to paint the interior in some places and would like to know, how to go about preparing the walls and ceiling for paint.

A. Clean down using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner, then apply a thin coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer and leave to cure with good ventilation for 48 hours, then you can apply a Resene pigmented waterborne paint such as Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen for walls and Resene SpaceCote Flat for ceilings.

The Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer is not designed to be applied as a thick wet film or to achieve opacity, the thinner the better.

The interior boards will change dimensions and this may expose a line of the original varnish. This may need to be coated if and when required.

April 2018

Q. Our fence has been waterblasted to remove moss and mould. We have a good, clean surface and I want to kill residual spores. How many days before I apply the undercoat to the Resene Lumbersider?

A. Waterblasting alone is not sufficient to kill spores. You do need to treat with Resene Moss & Mould Killer, leave for 48 hours then rinse with water.

April 2018

Q. Our house near Cromwell is nearing completion and we asked for Resene paints to be used, but the painter has used other products. The interior paint finish has quite a different ‘feel’. We specified Resene waterbased polyurethane - we didn't want that ‘yellowing’ of the wood that most polyurethane does. The product they have used has made the finish yellow. I am being told that the wood will yellow - even with Resene. Is this true? I need to know facts if I am to ask for all the wood to be stripped and refinished.

A. Waterborne varnishes such as Resene Aquaclear do not undergo film yellowing over time, this is only associated with a traditional single pack solventborne varnish.

April 2018

Q. We have an old state house which has wooden painted walls in our bathroom. I don't have money to do up the bathroom at this time so I am looking to repaint this area which frequently gets splashed by my 6 year old son. What paint can you recommend for this job to give it a facelift and also to prevent the walls deteriorating?

In places where it has been wet the paint is flaking and in other drier places it is fine. It is at least 12 years since it was painted probably longer.

A. Would therefore recommend a full strip to bare timber. There may be lead present in some of the older layers of paint.

After stripping, prepare surface to remove any residual stripper residues following manufacturer’s instructions, sand and then apply two coats of Resene Quick Dry primer sealer undercoat followed by two coats of Resene Lustacryl Kitchen & Bathroom. After application of the last coat of Resene Lustacryl Kitchen & Bathroom you will need to leave the system to cure for at least three days with good ventilation and no water/moisture contact during this time.

April 2018

Q. I have an older villa with an existing Resene red on a feature wall (rest is a neutral creamy/white). I wish to redecorate so what is the best way to cover the red in prep for a more neutral probably from your blue range. Maybe a coat of white sealer?

A. Apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry over the red colour.

April 2018

Q. I have been up on my roof and see the galvanised surface has worn off the roof and the reaction to the sea air has caused red rusty coloured marks everywhere. It is smooth to touch not gritty, it feels like chalky paint. The roof underneath looks in good condition and it is not rusted through any holes. I wish to do this myself as it is a flat pitch roof. I went into Resene yesterday and bought some Resene Roof and Metal Wash (small one to try it) on a patch. Is this what I should be doing or should I sand and treat with Resene Galvo One?

A. A definite yes to a wash down using Resene Roof and Metal Wash. Remove all areas of white corrosion material and as much red rust as is practicable using mechanical methods e.g. 3M Rust and Paint Removal Disc, taking care not to damage either the substrate or the surrounding areas. Spot prime prepared areas of rusting with Resene ArmourZinc 110 to achieve a dry film thickness of 75 microns, then a full coat of Resene Galvo One and finish with two coats of Resene Summit Roof.

Q. We are looking to install some Corten steel elements into a landscape design, but are worried about rust run off and maintenance. Are you able to supply any information about what products you recommend and also any examples of work?

A. This is a recognised outcome when using Corten steel. To lock rust in will require application of a film forming clear, but the application of a film to the rusted Corten substrate is not recommend by the US manufacturer of the steel.

There is currently no product that we are confident will achieve a long term control of rust run off that will also meet the Corten position on coating.

Q. Do I need to give Resene Sureseal a light sand after I have applied it to plasterboard? Or can I go straight over it with two topcoat layers. Our internal walls were half wallpaper and half painted.

A. Sanding of a sealer like Resene Sureseal is usually only to de-nib if required; this is normally not required on new plasterboard.

If the wallpaper is a vinyl wallpaper, then it will need a seal coat of Resene Vinyl Wallpaper Sealer before topcoating.

April 2018

Q. On the exterior of our home we have painted cement board horizontal panels with wood grain effect: can I make them look more like they are cedar or like timber by painting over them with Resene Forester? They have been painted in the past with Resene Lustacryl White Pointer.

A. Yes this is possible. You will need to apply a Resene Sonyx 101 tinted base coat colour for the Resene Forester system first then apply the two coats of Resene Forester.

April 2018

Q. I have purchased a house built in 1970 which has a concrete/cinder block lower level. There is some sediment and bubbling and someone suggested after cleaning it, I seal it before painting. Can you recommend a product you may have which would be suitable for this prior to me purchasing paint? It is currently painted.

A. To achieve a uniform paint coating on cinder block which is required to seal the substrate is almost impossible to achieve due to the cinder block surface structure.

The only possible way is to knock off the protrusions on the block then apply a cementitious filler such as RCS MultiStop (available from as Resene owned ColorShop), seal the filler then paint.

April 2018

Q. We have exposed wooden beams that have been stained a very dark brown. If we wanted to make them lighter (more like Resene Heartwood) in colour is this possible?

A. Stains are semi-transparent by nature. This means you will see the original dark brown colour underneath the new lighter colour. Generally speaking you can go darker when staining but going lighter tends not to be successful.

April 2018

Q. Our client has requested a high gloss for exterior front door to be spray painted by a specialist. What type of paint is recommended?

A. Suggest you use Resene Super Gloss for a high gloss finish. It has great durability for hard wearing areas and dries to a mirror gloss finish.

May 2018

Q We have a cork floor which has been coated in linseed oil, the oil is a few years old and dry. We have a problem that the glue used in putting the floor down, or the cork tiles themselves, is putting off an odour. We are thinking we will polyurethane over it to seal in the smell. My question is what product would we use?

A. Assuming that the oil used previously has dried to a hard finish the following applies: degrease using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner. You can then apply clear varnishes (solventborne such as Resene Qristal Polyurethanes) to the oiled timber after giving the timber a light sand. I'm not sure if polyurethane will help seal in the odour though.

May 2018

Q. We currently have a textured wall paper in our kitchen. I like the texture look but want to know if I can paint over it? If so what paint do you recommend? The wallpaper gets dirty so I want to be able to wipe it clean?

A. We recommend application of Resene Vinyl Wallpaper Sealer for vinyl papers. For older wallpapers (not vinyl) and papers with metallic as part of the pattern use Resene Sureseal. You can then apply at least two coats of Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen Kitchen & Bathroom or Resene Lustacryl Kitchen & Bathroom.

May 2018

Q I am making an outside table from a wood called Messmate and want a hard durable finish. It has been suggested to me by one of your staff that I use Resene Uracryl 403.

A. Messmate timber (eucalyptus species) has moderate hardness and strength, but low durability. It splits easily and is susceptible to lyctid borer attack. It will readily accept stains and paints but can be difficult to impregnate with preservatives. Messmate is mostly used for pulp production. We only have a fully pigmented system for the coating of exterior timbers.

The primer would be Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat (given the durability of the timber I suggest two coats of primer and envelope prime all faces). Allow the Resene Quick Dry to cure for at least 24 hours before applying the first coat of Resene Uracryl.

May 2018

Q What is the cheapest Resene paint for wooden kitchen cabinets? They are old wooden cabinets.

A. Degrease using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner paying particular attention to areas of hand contact. Sand using 220 grit sandpaper dust off, then apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry and finish with two coats of Resene Lustacryl.

May 2018

Q What paint should I use as a primer, on exterior totara window sills?

A. Resene Quick Dry is the only primer we recommend for bare totara. Solventborne oil based primers do not dry when applied to totara, as this timber contains natural anti-oxidants which inhibit the drying/cross linking of the primer.

May 2018

Q I am using Resene CoolColour Nero house paint as a final topcoat, painting with a brush in about 20 degrees. My problem is that even if I paint at a good speed, I am getting rough patches at the overlap where the paint is drying too fast. If I dilute the paint a bit will that help?

A. There are two ways to reduce this issue - avoid painting in direct sunlight or when very windy or add Resene Hot Weather Additive at the recommended addition level to the paint.

May 2018

Q. I need to repaint some lettering on a granite headstone and would like to know what primer and paint to use?

A. Scrub the lettering down using Resene Paint Prep and Housewash and allow to dry then using a Resene testpot apply two coats to the lettering and using a razor blade shave off paint at the letter edge.

May 2018

Q. We are trying to find a paint to go behind our little fireplace. The walls get hot and we would like paint with some grit in it that will not be damaged by the heat.

A. The criteria to achieve a paint finish in this situation is that you must be able to maintain hand contact on the surface when the fire is at full heat. Addition of grit to the paint will not affect heat resistance.

May 2018

Q. I need to concrete a hearth to keep the in-wall fire at the correct height. I would like to paint it (colour) rather than re-tile it. Do you have a product/s you would recommend?

A. The criteria we apply is that the surface can be painted if you can maintain hand contact on the surfaces when the fire is at full heat. In the case of a hearth this is unlikely to get hot, but the issue is hot embers falling onto the painted surface, if this occurs then the paint system will be burnt.

May 2018

Q. I want to paint the exterior of my caravan which has been stripped back to bare aluminium in some places. What paint do I need to use to prime the bare aluminium? And what paint do you recommend I use for the rest of the exterior?

A. Best system would be a primer coat of Resene Armourcote 221 and finish with two coats of Resene Uracryl 403.

May 2018

Q. I am looking to paint a baby's cot and wondering which paint is the correct paint to use. It’s currently varnished, I am sanding back and plan to use the waterborne primer from Resene that blocks bleed from any leftover varnish. Just curious as which the safest paint will be for topcoat.

A. Resene Lustacryl would be our recommendation. Allow the paint to dry for at least two weeks then wipe down using warm water before using.

May 2018

Q. I am going to repaint some interior doors. The doors in the past have been poorly prepared and acrylic enamel has been used over an old oil paint system. The existing topcoat is lifting in places. Is there a coating that can be used to give a satisfactory sealer/undercoat, to stop this from happening in the future? And then use a Resene Lustacryl semi-gloss as a topcoat.

A. Sorry, there is nothing to improve adhesion of the topcoat. You will have to sand the existing waterborne enamel back to the original enamel paint and make sure that the old enamel base paint is also thoroughly sanded. Then apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry and finish with two coats of Resene Lustacryl.

May 2018

Q. How do I stop gum bleeding out of timber? The timber is pine 150 x 50 facings around garage doors.

A. Strip resin bleed areas back to bare timber and apply a coat of Resene Aluminium Wood Primer. Note: the hard dry time of this primer is much longer than the standard Resene Wood Primer White so delay overcoating until the primer is hard dry (cannot be imprinted with a fingernail).

Dark colours can exacerbate the potential for resin bleed, Resene CoolColour™ technology can reduce but not eliminate the heat absorbed by the colour, if using a dark colour then definitely use the CoolColour version of the colour. The CoolColour version will not render the surface cool to touch, but it will reflect more heat than the same colour made using conventional colour pigments.

May 2018

Q. We have skylight windows which are sealed shut and the hinges are rusty on the outside.

A. Replacement of the hinges with stainless steel hinges is the only effective way to deal with this corrosion.

May 2018

Q. I was sold your testpots for an outdoor art project. The containers say nothing about interior or exterior use.

A. Resene testpots are made with an exterior grade, low sheen waterborne paint. They can be used for exterior and interior projects.

May 2018

Q. I have an approx 20 square metre dining room and kitchen area. It has ceramic tiles, some with remnants of polyurethane on. Most are matt finished and has been repaired with some porcelain tiles. We want to paint over them. Is this possible and if so, what is the process?

They are floor tiles and they are not glazed. Not sure why polyurethane was applied but most of it has worn off.

A. It is unusual to come across tiles coated with a polyurethane coating.

Using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner, ensure the surfaces to be painted are clean and free from grease, paying particular attention to hand contact areas. If the tiles are porous apply a coat of Resene Sureseal, if they are not porous then apply a thin coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer and allow curing without water contact, for at least 48 hours before overcoating. Then apply two coats of Resene Walk-on and finish with a coat of Resene Concrete Wax.

The paint system will take at least five days to develop adhesion and harden, full cure requires a month. The painted surface will not have the hardness properties of the original tiled surface.

May 2018

Q. I am using putty linseed oil formula. Recommendations are to seal within 7-10 days with an oil-based primer (Resene Enamel Undercoat). Other information I have read, suggests a much longer wait. Do you have any recommendations please? I am doing it now in autumn temperatures.

A. Putty can be overcoated when the putty has formed a hard skin.

May 2018

Q. I have a bathroom painted with Resene Lustacryl and want to paint over it with Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen Kitchen & Bathroom. What surface prep do I need to do to the existing paint?

A. Clean down using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner and thoroughly sand, then apply two coats of the new paint.

May 2018

Q. Please advise your recommendations on solving this problem. A painter painted the plaster ceiling with Resene Alkyd Flat. The ceiling was previously smoke damaged from a leaking fire in an adjacent room. I did the meths test on the final coat and the one before and nothing came off on the cloth. It appears paint is only peeling back one layer. I am thinking he should have used a coat of Sureseal between coats.

A. For a situation of flaking paint, we recommend removing the loose flaky paint with a scraper back to a sound surface. Sand the surface to feather the edges, but also to provide a mechanical key. If it goes back to bare substrate, this is when you would be looking to seal the area with a coat of Resene Sureseal. If the underneath coating is a glossy enamel, then use Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer as an adhesion primer.

May 2018

Q. We are going to build a house and we have been told that we should not paint our western red cedar weatherboards black, but stain with wood oil instead and that we will have to restain every two years. We would rather not do this. Do you have any suggestions on how we can get a nice long lasting black finish, to the weatherboards without going down the cladding route?

A. Stains are higher maintenance in that they will need more frequent recoating to maintain durability.

In your case the best paint system would be: apply Resene Wood Primer as the primer, then a coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat White and then two coats of a Resene exterior acrylic tinted using Resene CoolColour™ technology. Resene CoolColours are not cool to touch but reflect more heat than the same colour made with non-CoolColour technology. There will always be the potential for warping and cupping when painting timber cladding with dark colours. Our Resene CoolColour technology will reduce but not eliminate this outcome.

May 2018

Q. I want to build raised bed gardens for veggies and economically, my best option is H3 treated wood. Do you have a product that seals the wood to prevent or significantly reduce the leaching of the preservatives in the wood that is safe for edibles and suitable for the garden environment? Ideally I want to retain the natural wood appearance.

A. If you are particularly concerned, it is suggested you plant no closer than 35cm to the timber edge or place a plastic or polythene barrier between the vegetable garden soil and the treated timber. For aesthetic reasons, you can paint the timber with a coat of Resene Wood Primer followed by two coats of Resene Lumbersider for a painted finish or two coats of Resene Woodsman for a stained finish. For an eco approach, use macrocarpa, cypress, saligna or any untreated hardwood, however if left in contact with the ground, the timber will eventually rot.

May 2018

Q. I'm trying to paint some concrete and was wondering if Resene has any products that can do this? I have no preference for clear or colour. We've just pulled up the carpet in a small office. The concrete under it is looking a bit worse for wear and I was thinking of doing a bluey-grey overcoat. Will it need a couple of coats?

A. The floor will need diamond grinding to produce a uniform surface resembling, 180 grit sandpaper. The dust will need to be vacuumed up and then mopped to remove all traces of dust. You can then apply three coats of Resene Aquapoxy with the first coat thinned 20-30% water.

Alternatively after grinding apply a coat of Resene ConcreteSeal 3in1 and two coats of Resene Walk-on.

May 2018

Q. What is the anticipated life of new paint? Home fully prepped one undercoat and two finish coats. West and North exteriors fading below roof-soffit shadow line. The paint was bought and applied 11 years ago.

A. The northern and western elevations of a property will always be subject to more intensive weathering. There are two possible outcomes as a result of paint being exposed to weathering, chalking and colour fade. Chalking as the name suggests is the appearance of a white dust like material on the surface of the point. This occurs as the binder (resin) system is broken down upon exposure to UV along with water. The time to onset of chalking is related to paint gloss level and resin type. In the same weathering conditions the onset of chalking is longer with a full gloss finish than a low gloss finish.

Colour fade is a different outcome; the pigments used to produce a given colour can have a range of fade resistance. If a colour has four pigments that are needed to tint the colour each of the pigments will have a set fade resistance and upon weathering the colour will fade to the most stable pigment colour(s).

There is a simple way to differentiate between chalking and fading., If the painted surface is washed down using Resene Paint Prep and Housewash and the original colour is seen on the cleaned area then that is chalking, if the original colour is not seen then that is a fade situation. Often chalking is interpreted as fade, and both chalking and colour fade can occur together.

No paint will retain the same gloss and colour after undergoing extended weathering. Typically a painted surface will require a maintenance coat/s within 10 years to maintain aesthetics. The time frame is determined by level of exposure and paint type.

The angles of roofing can also accelerate the time to chalking, if the same paint is exposed at an angle of 45 degrees the rate of exposure to weathering is twice that of the same paint on a vertical exposure.

May 2018

Q. Repainting our caravan. We have Resene acrylic enamel leftover from our house rebuild and wondered if it will be ok to paint on aluminium. We are priming the roof with your etch and just sanded the sides. We have bought Resene Lustacryl waterborne enamel for the bottom in Resene Tapa for a change of colour.

A. Apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry over the etch primer then you can apply the Resene waterborne enamel topcoats.

May 2018

Q. We accidentally scratched the wall when moving furniture and the scratch is quite deep. Could you please advise how we can fix it? And also, what is the best possible way to match the paint colour?

A. Use plasterboard stopping compound for filling/repairs and sand flush with the existing wallboard when fully dry. Seal off the repairs with Resene Broadwall Waterborne Wallboard Sealer then apply two coats of the topcoat colour.

Re the topcoat match, there are two elements to this; one is to match the existing colour but also the existing gloss level. In this situation unless you can find the original can of paint, the only way may be to recoat an entire wall or room to achieve a consistent colour.

May 2018

Q. What prep work and paint would l use to paint over Melamine joinery. It also has PVC edging? It's kitchen joinery so has to stand up to everyday wear and tear.

A. The following paint system can be used for painting laminates such as Melteca.

Scrub down using a cleaner such as Jif and remove all residues. Wet sand with a 400 wet and dry sandpaper, taking care not to unduly scratch the laminate surface. Rinse clean and allow to dry, then apply Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer (this only needs to be a thin coat and will not achieve opacity over the laminate colour). Allow to cure for 48 hours then undercoat with Resene Quick Dry Waterborne Primer Undercoat and finish with two coats of Resene Lustacryl.

For best results, roll the topcoats using a Resene No.4 roller sleeve. The paint system will take at least five days to develop adhesion and harden, full cure requires a month. The painted surface will not have the hardness properties of the original laminate.

May 2018

Q. We plan to paint the exterior bricks of our 1978 house (we have painted the fibre cement cladding already). Is there anything special we need to use to seal the bricks before we paint? Do we need to use a special primer or just a normal primer? Then when it comes to paint, is there a specific type you can recommend for external bricks?

A. Ensure the surface is clean and free from contaminants including bio growth (moss/lichen/algae - if these are present then treat with Resene Moss & Mould Killer diluted and used to label directions). Apply a primer coat of Resene Concrete Primer then finish with two coats of any Resene exterior waterborne paint.

May 2018

Q. I want to shabby chic a dining table and have put an oil based undercoat on it. Now I'm wondering if I can use waterbased paint on top of that and whether that would be serviceable enough for the wear and tear it's going to get. Do I have to use an oil based topcoat and then would I have to use some sort of finish to make it easy to wipe?

A. Resene Lustacryl would be my suggestion for a waterborne topcoat.

The fully cured paint film is harder than a conventional waterborne paint but not as hard as traditional solventborne enamel. Full cure will take up to a month to occur, but after two weeks most of the cross linking will have occurred.

May 2018

Q. Can I paint over heat stains on the roof of a lounge?

A. Yes, I suggest that you wash down the areas using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner, then apply Resene Sureseal, then two coats of your chosen Resene topcoat.

May 2018

Q. We had wallpaper professionally hung two years ago. We have noticed the meeting edges of strips lifting slightly in places - why would this happen now?

A. There are two scenarios here that may be the cause; they are technically known as ‘Peaking Joins’, the other is ‘Curling Edges’.

1. Peaking joins:
The wallpaperer may be working too fast which is not allowing the paper backing of the wallpaper to expand fully prior to hanging - paper backing expands up to 2%. The paper therefore continues to expand on the wall, causing the joins to peak. The solution is to slow down and allow the paper to soak fully before hanging.

2. Curling edges:
This occurs on paper backed product due to tension in the drying process. There can be a number of factors or combination of factors that will cause this:

  • Incorrect relaxing time (as per above).
  • Lack of paste (pre pasted) - drawing the paper too quickly through the water trough if one is used.
  • Too hot when installed – edges dry out.
  • If paper is being hand pasted there may be a lack of sufficient paste on the edges or the wrong paste is used.
  • The use of a seam roller, which forces the paste from the join

Solutions: To ensure a 100% finish, the best way forward is to strip and rehang. However, another solution may be to carefully peel back the joins slightly, apply paste to the back of the paper, allow it to soak/relax and then reapply a small amount of paste again and push the paper to the wall. Do not use a seam roller on the joins, as this may force the paste from the joins resulting in the scenario repeating itself - there are no guarantees here but it may work for you.

May 2018

Q. I am looking for a sealer to put on our timber sarking ceilings. It is bleeding through where there are knots.

A. We recommend Resene Aluminium Wood Primer. The dry time for this primer is quite slow and only can be overcoated once hard dry.

May 2018

Q. I would like some product advice regarding water based galvanised steel primers. We would like a product that we could apply to galvanised steel floor plates. The product would not have to have extreme long-life; however, it would be beneficially to be able to procure a product that is available in a variety of colours if possible. Ideally, we’d like to be able to make this surface somewhat abrasive for traction (i.e. by applying sand to the surface between paint coats). We would not be keen on a solvent based product as we are not geared up for solvent application.

I have a friend who is a house painter who tells me there is a product that you make that may work; he uses it for roofs and it is light blue, is this correct?

A. Our waterborne galvanised primer is Resene Galvo-Prime.

The product is only available in the one colour and cannot be tinted, to achieve colour and slip resistance the primer will need to be overcoated with a top coat that has added slip aggregate.

May 2018

Q. We have a concrete block outside wall. When it rains the water comes through slowly. What would you recommend to seal the wall?

A. Is the exterior wall accessible for painting? You should also check the pointing (plaster that holds the blocks together) is sound and there are no cracks.

Making the exterior weathertight (Resene X-200) is by far the best option. You can apply Resene HydraBlock to the internal face; while this will resist a degree of water ingress the success of this option is dependent upon the pressure exerted by the water coming through the wall.

May 2018

Q. I wish to stain a recently installed door frame (inside) to match up as close as possible to a Lockwood interior wall. What is the best product to use in order to achieve this?

A. If the timber is bare (interior exposure only) then you can apply a stain colour of Resene Colorwood then overcoat with Resene Aquaclear (waterborne clear) or Resene Qristal Clear (solventborne clear).

May 2018

Q. Could you tell me what is the best paint or primer, for painting an aluminium sheet metal gate? I was looking at Resene Vinyl Etch.

A. Prime with Resene Vinyl Etch then apply two coats of Resene Uracryl 402 (semi-gloss) or Resene Uracryl 403 (gloss).

May 2018

Q. We have an old 1948 weatherboard house, with rimu weatherboards and we suspect one of the earlier coats might have been lead based paint. The paint however, is in pretty good condition. We have washed, scraped and sanded an area; most of the paint is very sound so I don't see the need to strip it all the way back to raw wood. Should we sand and apply Resene Quick Dry to the raw spot and bad areas, or Resene Quick Dry primer to all of it after sanding and scraping and then apply two coats of Resene Sonyx 101? An old painter tells me the new primer and paint will pull off the old paint from the rimu.

A. Take all necessary precautions to avoid inhalation of any sanding dust or release of lead containing material to the environment.

Spot prime bare timber with Resene Wood Primer not Resene Quick Dry, then you can apply the two coats of Resene Sonyx 101 in your chosen colour. The old paint must be clean and chalk free; there is a risk of adhesion loss of an old paint layer if you are moving to change the colour from a paler to a darker colour. Resene CoolColour™ versions of the darker colour will reflect more heat than the same colour made using non-cool technology, but there will remain a level of risk.

May 2018

Q. We are working on a school renovation and we have a timber deck which forms part of an accessible route. We require a non-slip clear coating for the 32mm pine timber deck, with a sand impregnation for extra slip resistance. Could you assist me in specifying an appropriate product?

A. Sorry, we do not recommend this. Application of clear film forming coatings to exterior timbers, usually sees the clear film peel from the timber as UV penetrates through the clear and the timber is degraded at the timber/clear interface.

May 2018

Q. I’ve got some very faint cracks above the windows, from when my foundation was fixed. I don’t want to rake the crack and then plaster and tape it. I was also thinking of using the most flexible indoor paint. What is the most elastic indoor paint you have and could a very flexible paint like Resene X-200 be used inside for these cracks?

A. We recommend a stripe coat of Resene X-200 for hairline cracks.

Resene X-200 is not formulated on an elastomeric resin system. It is extensible but not elastic. Resene X-300E is our elastomeric exterior paint, but we usually don’t specify this for interior application as it needs UV to give surface hardening.

May 2018

Q. I have a new stable door made from pinus radiata (dry timber) exterior, but sheltered. Should I paint the door or oil stain it? I am concerned about sticking where the top and bottom sections meet.

A. I suggest you look to apply the following system; prime with a coat of Resene Wood Primer, followed by an undercoat of Resene Quick Dry and finish with two coats of Resene Lustacryl (use the Resene CoolColour™ version if you are using a dark colour). The CoolColour version will reflect more heat than the same colour made using non-cool technology, but does not render the painted surface cool to touch.

May 2018

Q. I am working with youth on a local initiative, to paint their local basketball court and I am trying to source the paint for the youth to use. What paint is needed and do you supply this? They would ideally love a maroon and gold court, but this is open to conversation if the paint colours are not available.

A. We recommend Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path.

May 2018

Q. I would like to know what product I can recommend to the painter to seal then paint a mens' and ladies' bathroom where all the walls are lined in Formica®. We need to change the colour from beige to white. It is a Medical Clinic and won’t have heavy duty use.

A. Using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner ensure the surfaces to be painted are clean and free from grease, paying particular attention to hand contact areas.

Apply a thin coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer and allow to cure without water contact for at least 48 hours before over coating (this only needs to be a thin coat and will not achieve opacity over the laminate colour). Allow to cure for 48 hours then apply two coats of Resene Lustacryl Kitchen & Bathroom.

The new paint system will take five days to develop good initial adhesion and continue to cure for an additional three weeks until full cure occurs. In the early stages the paint surface will not have good resistance to cleaners or abrasion as these features develop as the film undergoes curing.

May 2018

Q. I need to paint the interior walls of my house which are polyurethaned timber. Is there a non acrylic sealer I can use that will bond with the polyurethane so I don't have to sand the entire house?

A. Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer is our recommended product for this application.

May 2018

Q. I have a damp concrete wall, exterior. I have applied two coats of Resene HydraBlock to the bare concrete wall.

Can you advise of the next step:
(a) Do I put one coat or two coats of Resene Waterborne Uracryl urethane acrylic semi-gloss finish on next?
(b) Am I able to use the Uracryl at the bottom and use a cheaper type of paint at the top?

A. To achieve a uniform finish two coats are required. Our testing has clearly shown the Resene Uracryl 802 is the best topcoat option for adhesion.

May 2018

Q. Please recommend the type of paint to use for painting a kid's kitchen. I was going to paint two coats of pigmented sealer over the top of a factory painted product.

A. Resene Sureseal is usually used for priming a bare cementitious surface not a painted surface. The coating that comes with the unit is unknown and could be a number of factor applied paint types. My suggestion would be to thoroughly sand using 220 grit sandpaper then apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry and finish with two coats of Resene Lustacryl.

May 2018

Q. Can Resene All Black be applied directly to previously painted cladding without needing to undercoat? The surface was prepped and painted four years ago with Resene Laurel. Should the surface be undercoated with white prior to this latest painting?

A. To reduce the potential for heat related stress when changing to the colour we would always recommend that two coats of the Resene CoolColour™ version of the topcoat colour is applied over a white basecoat such as Resene Quick Dry. This will give the maximum possible heat reflection to the system. Note the CoolColour system will not make the painted surface cool to touch but will reflect more heat than the topcoat colour made on non-cool technology.

May 2018

Q. Our indoor porch has concrete tiles that we are wanting to paint. Is there a special concrete primer we need to use?

A. Check the concrete tiles first. If you splash water onto the tiles is the water immediately absorbed and the wetted area darkened? If the tiles are darkened it suggests they are not sealed. Based on this apply a seal coat of Resene Sureseal and finish with two coats of Resene Walk-on.

May 2018

Q. What paint do I use to mark artificial grass tennis court?

A. The easiest option would be two coats of Resene Lumbersider thinned however it can be difficult to get uniform line delineation when coating this substrate.

May 2018

Q. Just wondering if I want to use Resene paint for wooden garden stakes to make a coloured sweet pea climbing frame in my garden do I use untreated wood stakes or treated wood stakes? What can I paint them with and do I need to use a base coat on the stake first. I have an old concrete bird bath that I don't want to use as a bird bath anymore so it doesn't have to hold water or anything but I'm wanting to paint it with one of the Resene Multi-finish colours - is that suitable paint and does it need some kind of undercoat and finish/seal?

A. Resene Lumbersider can be used for painting new wooden garden stakes. Resene Lumbersider is available in all Resene colours with the exception of metallic. To increase the durability of the paint system priming with Resene Quick Dry is recommended.

For the bird bath, ensure the surfaces to be painted are clean (free of mould/algae etc.) then apply a coat of Resene Sureseal and finish with two coats of Resene Lumbersider in your chosen colour.

Q. I have painted a room and now there is a dreadful smell. It appears there are little beads on the paint. I have had a dehumidifier in the room which hasn't made any difference and ventilation. We put up new wallboard and sealed it with wallboard sealer. Any ideas?

A. My guess would be that the paint may have developed bacterial contamination. Suggest that you make up a dilute solution (1 to 3 dilution) of bleach (Janola) and wipe the walls down (can also use a clean squeegee mop) with this, take care to wear suitable eye and glove protection and protect flooring and furnishings using drop cloths. Allow to dry with good ventilation and see if this addresses the odour issue.

Q. I am painting wooden floors and would like to know what paint to use. The floors are in the hallway through the middle of the house, in the lounge at the end of the house which has French doors opening out of this room and stairs leading to the outside and the garage.

Our intention is to have plywood flooring. This can be altered as I am currently planning the house extension. Ideally I would like a paint that is not stinky, but I am keen to know the best to use and one that is long lasting.

A. Where a painted finish is likely to be subject to UV (open door etc), then we recommend a pigmented finish only.

If ply flooring, then we suggest a primer coat of Resene Quick Dry and two coats of Resene Uracryl 802. Allow the Resene Quick Dry to cure for at least 24 hours before applying the first coat of Resene Uracryl.

May 2018

Q. I'd like to paint over my Formica® laminated kitchen counters. Do you have a product that would work for this?

A. Using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner, ensure the surfaces to be painted are clean and free from grease and pay particular attention to hand contact areas.

Apply a thin coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer and allow to cure without water contact for at least 48 hours, before overcoating (note only a thin coat is required, the adhesion sealer is not formulated to give opacity or wet film build). Then apply two coats of Resene Lustacryl.

The new paint system will take five days to develop good initial adhesion and continue to cure for an additional three weeks until full cure occurs. In the early stages, the paint surface will not have good resistance to cleaners or abrasion as these features develop as the film undergoes curing.

Note that painting will not reproduce the original features of the laminate.

May 2018

Q. What product would you suggest for priming and painting a new timber pergola with?

A. Apply a primer coat of Resene Wood Primer and finish with two coats of Resene Lumbersider.

May 2018

Q. We are putting in pine benchtops in our kitchen and bathroom. I have been told about a two step hardener (epoxy maybe?). Could you please advise me on what we should purchase? Also is it clear and/or a darker colour? We want a clear varnish, not paint.

A. Four coats of Resene Polythane would be the best system.

June 2018

Q. We want to paint our red clay unglazed brick clad 1950s house. The pointing is sound. What do I need to do to clean/prep/prime the surface? What type of paint and rollers should I use?

A. Treat any areas of bio growth with Resene Moss & Mould Killer diluted and used to label directions. When the bricks are dry apply a primer coat of Resene Concrete Primer and finish with two coats of Resene Sonyx 101 (semi-gloss) or Resene Lumbersider (low sheen).

Use the CoolColour™ version of the topcoat colour if selecting a dark topcoat colour; the CoolColour™ version will not render the surface cool to touch but will reflect more heat than the same colour made using non CoolColour™ pigments.

June 2018

Q. Can you paint old MDF kitchen cabinets? If so what paint do you use and what preparation? I think it is Melteca®.

A. Using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner ensures the surfaces to be painted are clean and free from grease, pay particular attention to hand contact areas. Apply a thin coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer and allow to cure without water contact for at least 48 hours before over coating. Then apply two coats of Resene Lustacryl.

The new paint system will take five days to develop good initial adhesion and continue to cure for an additional three weeks until full cure occurs. In the early stages the paint surface will not have good resistance to cleaners or abrasion as these features develop as the film undergoes curing. Painting will not reproduce the original laminate features.

Q. I'm just finishing the railings for my baby's cot. I have some of your Resene Danska Teak Oil which I'd like to put on the rails before I put everything together however I wanted to check that this product is safe in the event the baby chews on the rails in the future. Can you please confirm?

A. The product is based on a natural vegetable oil with added driers, the driers are lead free. I suggest that you wait until the oil is hard dry then leave for an additional two weeks then wipe down with warm water and a detergent before using the cot.

We are not aware of any safety issues with the cured oil.

Q. When Resene X-200 is painted onto new concrete blocks do the blocks need to be completely dry or can they be damp before painting? Or there a primer that can be put on to a damp concrete block surface or is there an alternative product which can be used to seal the concrete blocks on a garage? We are painting in winter.

A. I assume we are talking about making the exterior face weather tight. The lower the block water content the better; while Resene X-200 can be applied to a damp surface application of the full system will reduce the ability of substrate moisture to come out of the coated face. Resene X-200 will allow water vapour to be released but not liquid water. There is no other membrane system that will achieve weathertightness that does not have the same application requirements. If the interior space is well ventilated then this could give a passage for liquid water to be vented.

Use of the wintergrade version, Resene Wintergrade X-200, does extend the application window under marginal conditions but colour options are reduced to colours tinted from a white base. Addition of Resene Umbrella Additive does give early protection to light rain showers.

June 2018

Q. Can you use the seal and prep over a slightly textured wallpaper so you can then paint?

A. Yes, however sealer choice is determined by wallpaper type, if it is a vinyl or vinyl coated paper then we recommend sealing with Resene Vinyl Wallpaper Sealer, if an older paper type use Resene Sureseal.

June 2018

Q. Painting over wallpaper do l need to put on an undercoat before top coats?

A. This depends upon whether the paper is a vinyl or vinyl coated. If it is vinyl coated, then it needs a sealer coat of Resene Vinyl Wallpaper Sealer followed by two coats of topcoat, such as Resene Zylone Sheen or Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen.

June 2018

Q. I’ve just had my building painted and have paint splatter all over the powder coated balustrade railings. Do you have a product to remove the paint splatter without affecting the railings?

A. If it is a waterborne paint and fresh, try a gentle rub with a nonabrasive cloth and meths. Select a non-visible area to try first.

June 2018

Q. What paint should I be using on my bathroom walls and ceiling? The GIB® is new and we have an extractor fan.

A. Seal the GIB® Aqualine with Resene Sureseal (note GIB® recommend a solventborne sealer for this substrate). Apply an undercoat of Resene Quick Dry, and then finish with two coats of Resene Lustacryl or Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen Kitchen & Bathroom. Allow for curing of the competed system, for at least three days with warmth and ventilation.

June 2018

Q. What's the best course of action if you've accidentally painted bare wood without using any primer? Should I lightly sand the paint and then add primer? Or just accept a bad job and add more coats of paint?

A. If exterior timber, sand to remove, then prime is the safest option.

June 2018

Q. I have totara French doors and they need painting. Could you please give me advice on what to do with these due to the oils produced by the totara timber? My preference is oil paint.

A. Resene Quick Dry must be used as the primer for bare totara. Solvent based primers such as Resene Wood Primer will not dry when applied direct to bare totara.

June 2018

Q. Can I use oil based paint on top of Resene Quick Dry or do I have to stay with waterbased enamel?

A. Resene Quick Dry can be overcoated with both waterbased and solventbased topcoat systems.

June 2018

Q. My painter has sprayed new weatherboards with primer/undercoat and so far on one topcoat it has orange peel - what is the cause and how can I fix it?

A. Orange peel is a paint finish that has a visual texture which you can see. This is usually more obvious with a higher gloss paint finish or if the paint is viewed looking down the boards. Orange peel is usually accepted for an industrial finish as high solids paints are used and when high solids paints are sprayed, there is minimal flow and levelling. In general under normal application conditions, low build paints such as waterborne paints do not show orange peel when sprayed. As temperature or air flow increases, there is an increased likelihood of an orange peel finish, as the paint dries too fast to allow flow and levelling to occur.

Orange peel is (in part) caused by improper painting technique; the orange peel effect has a few different causes. It can be caused by premature evaporation of water/thinner, incorrect spray gun setup (i.e. low air pressure or incorrect nozzle), spraying at an angle other than perpendicularly, or applying excessive paint. I cannot tell from your email if the orange peel was present before the first coat of top coat was applied. It can be difficult to spot this as most primers/undercoats dry to a near flat finish and surface detail is not revealed until a topcoat is applied. The practice of sanding between coats has all but disappeared from trade practice. Reasons being, it is not needed to get intercoat adhesion and also time required.

Dry sanding of most waterborne paints is difficult, as the heat created by sanding causes the paint to ball up, even more so, the case with freshly applied paints.

Wet sanding will be the only way to reduce the level of orange peel with your paint job. While I have no idea of the extent of orange peel, if you did not ask for a smooth orange peel free finish, then you may struggle to get your painter to remedy to a level of finish that you will accept.

June 2018

Q. I want to paint a wooden floor in bathroom but it has an old poly coat on. Is there a paint that can go straight over, or do I need to prep? I notice there are things like whitewash.

A. Thorough sanding is a must, you do not need to remove all of the existing clear but it must be profiled for recoating. Then apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry and finish with two coats of Resene Uracryl 802 White. Allow the Resene Quick Dry to cure for at least 24 hours before applying the first coat of Resene Uracryl 802.

June 2018

Q. I want to paint my child's highchair but I'm unsure of which paint would be safe and easily able to be wiped down. The highchair is wooden with a varnish that is wearing off. Which paint would you recommend?

A. It may need a thorough sand before painting, then dust off and apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry and finish with two coats of Resene Lustacryl.

Allow the completed paint system to cure for a couple of weeks then wipe down with warm water before commissioning.

June 2018

Q. I am currently having a house built and I am concerned that the painters are painting internally with temperatures less than 10 degrees. They are professional painters but I would like to know what effect this will have on the paint job itself. Is it immediately obvious if there is a problem or is it something that will show up later?

A. There are three factors that influence the drying rate and required film formation of waterborne paints (solventborne paints not really an issue). These are temperature, humidity and air flow. If two of these are in place, then this will address most concerns around the application of the waterborne paint. If the painters are using extraction fans to vent water that is released from the paint, then this is certainly a positive step. Heaters (electrical) and dehumidifiers are also means to address paint application under marginal conditions.

Compromised film formation can affect durability, this is not immediately seen.

June 2018

Q. Can I use your paint to paint a kitchen linoleum floor? It has stains on it, but no holes etc. The sheen has been taken off due to wear and me cleaning it down with baking soda/vinegar in prep for painting.

A. The following system has been used for painting hard lino: After degreasing, apply a thin coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer and leave to cure for at least 48 hours. The Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer is not designed to give high wet film thickness or opacity. The thinner it is the better for adhesion. Then apply two coats of Resene Lustacryl waterborne enamel. System will take 2-3 weeks to fully harden.

Given the varying types of lino flooring, we cannot give a guarantee that the paint system will achieve a long term system. The painted surface will not have the same features as the original lino flooring.

June 2018

Q. Can you paint acrylic waterbased roof paint, onto exterior acrylic painted walls?

A. If it is Resene Hi-Glo, then that can be used on cladding and on a roof. With a product like Resene Summit Roof paint it is not what we would tend to recommend for general exterior painting.

June 2018

Q. Can Resene Whitewash paint be used on chipboard floors? We have some ugly chipboard in the toilet, bathroom, kitchen and entrance and I would like to paint them either with whitewash (if suitable) or in a bright white Resene Enamacryl to update them until we renovate in a few years.

A. Resene Colorwood Whitewash can be used on chipboard floors. When using it in this way, we recommend overcoating it with several coats of Resene Aquaclear or Resene Qristal ClearFloor 1K.

June 2018

Q. Over what period, is the fly repellent additive effective? Once it has ceased to be effective, can the additive be sprayed on to the paint again or do the walls and ceilings need to be repainted?

A. There is not a set amount of time that Resene Fly Deterrent is effective for. Testing has shown a significant reduction in fly spots when using the product. Resene Fly Deterrent discourages flies from sitting on painted surfaces but will not harm or kill them. It works best indoors in dry areas and is ideal for separate toilet areas, lounges, bedrooms etc and in commercial projects in ‘dry’ areas. In wet or steamy areas, the fly deterrent effect will wear off faster. Cleaning of the painted area will also reduce the fly deterrent effect. Because of this, it is generally not recommended for bathrooms. If the fly deterrent effect wears off, repainting would be required by painting on one coat of your chosen Resene waterborne topcoat dosed with Resene Fly Deterrent.

June 2018

Q. We are trying to create a school mosaic. However, I have no idea what we will need for it. Could you please let me know what kinds of paints etc you think we will need? This mosaic is going to be outdoors and we would like it to be very long lasting. Will we need some kind of overcoat/varnish? Which products would you recommend and do you sell these?

A. If you want to paint onto glazed tiles for an exterior artwork, the following applies.

Using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner ensures the surfaces to be painted are clean and free from grease. Apply a thin coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer and allow curing without water contact for at least 48 hours before overcoating. If you want to use quite a few different colours, I would suggest using our testpots. The majority of testpots are an interior/exterior low sheen acrylic (Resene Lumbersider). If you don't want to use testpots, you could use Resene Lustacryl, which is semi-gloss waterborne enamel. When the painting is completed, you could use either Resene Clearcoat UVS which is a waterborne gloss designed to help prevent fading of strong colours, or even Resene Uracryl GraffitiShield which is a waterborne two pot clear finish, that would act as an anti-graffiti coating and would also help with durability.

June 2018

Q. Do you have a finishing product that will give a soap wash finish (blended oak) on timber veneer?

A. The Resene system would be to apply a stain coat of Resene Colorwood in Resene Rock Salt, then overcoat with three coats of Resene Aquaclear. If you want to increase the depth of whiteness, you can add a pottle of Resene Colorwood Enhance White to a litre of Resene Aquaclear White, you can add to all coats but may want to only add to the first or second etc coats of Resene Aquaclear to achieve your desired effect.

June 2018

Q. How do I paint skirting board without getting paint on the carpet?

A. Use masking tape or a section of thin cardboard pressed against the edge.

June 2018

Q. I would like to specify a ceiling paint for use in a commercial shower cubicles where standard kitchen and bathroom paint will not be fit for purpose.

A. Apply a seal coat of Resene Sureseal, a coat of Resene Enamel Undercoat and finish with two coats of Resene Ceiling Velvet.

June 2018

Q. Can your Resene Colorwood Enhance product be used in a polyurethane based stain and varnish to add extra colour?

A. Resene Colorwood Enhance can only be used in a single pack waterborne varnish, e.g. Resene Aquaclear.

June 2018

Q. Please advise products and procedures for painting new Harditex® with radiata timber battens, including seal coat, fillers, and methods of application.

A. For the wooden battens: prime with Resene Quick Dry. For the Harditex® prime with Resene Concrete Primer. Then apply two coats of Resene Sonyx 101 topcoat colour, if selecting a dark colour we recommend applying the CoolColour™ version of the topcoat colour. Application of the CoolColour topcoats will not render the surface cool to touch but the CoolColour version will reflect more heat than the same colour made using non CoolColour pigmentation.

June 2018

Q. I want to use a piece of metal, as both a magnetic board and blackboard in one. Can any Resene paint be made into blackboard paint by the wonders of science?

A. If the metal is steel then this will give you a substrate that you can attach magnets to. For the Resene Blackboard Paint, apply a primer coat of Resene Galvo-Prime metal primer and two coats of Resene Blackboard Paint.

If you didn’t have a metal surface you could use Resene Magnetic Magic and Resene Blackboard Paint.

June 2018

Q. I have just built a brand new home garage, 16m x 9m and the 125mm concrete floor is still pristine and bare. I have built it to house my American cars and bikes in, and I want a hardwearing floor coating. To put it on before putting my cars on it, I would like your advice on what to use i.e. paint or epoxy. I want durability because of the occasional oil and fluid spills on it. It needs to be hard wearing and anti-slip to some degree.

A. Resene Aquapoxy for Flooring is the only product that we offer for garage flooring.

June 2018

Q. I have a table that is epoxy polyester powder coated steel, which that I would like to use outdoors (undercover). Do you have a clear sealer I can use to protect it and avoid chalking/peeling/rusting?

A. Application of a clear coat can only protect the topcoat from chalking; no corrosion or adhesion control can come from application of a clear topcoat. Give the topcoat a light sand and then apply a full coat of Resene Uracryl 403 Clear UVS for UV control.

June 2018

Q. I need to re-varnish a lot of WRC timber windows, in a clear finish. The previous interior clear semi-gloss waterborne finish (not Resene) broke down with the sun shining in on sills and stiles in record time. What do you recommend?

A. Strip back to bare and thoroughly sand then apply a seal coat of Resene TimberLock (wipe excess at time of application), and leave to cure for at least 2 days ensuring good ventilation at all times. Then apply three coats of Resene Aquaclear waterborne varnish.

June 2018

Q. We have replaced our kitchen and have stopped the plaster and have bare MDF walls. How should I treat these prior to hanging Paste the Wall wallpaper?

A. Prime the bare stopped plasterboard with Resene Sureseal, prime the bare MDF with Resene Quick Dry then overcoat with a coat of Resene Sureseal.

Note that Resene Sureseal must be the basecoat for applying the wallpaper but cannot be applied direct to MDF.

June 2018

Q. We want to paint our concrete garage floor. Can you provide any advice on what paints to use and colour recommendations (dark vs light pros and cons)?

A. Resene Aquapoxy for Flooring is the system we recommend for domestic garage floors. Best preparation is by diamond grinding to achieve an even surface texture similar to 180 grit sandpaper. Resene Aquapoxy can be tinted to a range of Resene colours; for greys the darkest grey that can be tinted is Resene Jumbo.

June 2018

Q. I want to paint a mural on a basketball court. Is there specific paint that needs to be used on concrete? Also it needs to be slip resistant and what needs to be used so that the concrete doesn't suck up all the paint?

A. Resene Sureseal as the seal coat and then two coats of Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path.

June 2018

Q. I would like to know the shelf life of Resene Lumbersider paint please. By the 'shelf life'. I want to know how long I can keep the paint from when I bought it and it will still be OK to use (stored in good conditions).

A. Not a simple question to answer, if unopened and stored under cool interior conditions but off a concrete floor then at least 5 years. At the end of this time the paint will need to be stirred with a flat stirrer to reincorporate any settled components.

Waterborne paint is prone to bacterial contamination, at manufacture we add an in can preservative to counter this but the preservative can be challenged and used up over time. If the can has been opened for use then the act of opening and use, dipping brushes into etc this can introduce bacteria into the paint can which depending upon the level type of bacterial introduction and this has the potential to see a rapid decline in then in can preservative level to a paint where protection no longer exists.

The nose test will give an indication of bacterial contamination, if the wet paint has an odour similar to unwashed sports socks then this is the odour signal of bacterial contamination.

It is best practice to only purchase the quantity of paint required for a project and use most if not all.

June 2018

Q. We are installing a 19mm ply floor in a garage loft. I would like some ideas on how to finish it. I think I would like to do a very faint colourwash, then I guess you have to seal it. Do you have any suggestions or information on products?

A. You could use Resene Aquaclear with added Resene Colorwood Enhance to create a subtle coloured clear. Alternatively stain, using Resene Colorwood interior stain than apply three coats of Resene Aquaclear waterborne varnish.

July 2018

Q. I’d like to paint over some powder coated aluminium trim to match the colour with the rest of the room. Can you please advise on what preparation and primer would be required?

A. Clean down using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner, then apply a thin coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer and leave to cure for at least two days, then overcoat with two coats of Resene Lustacryl .

Painting will not reproduce the original features of the powder coated metal.

July 2018

Q. I have some heavy macrocarpa outside furniture that I sanded and applied three coats of a film forming clear finish (non Resene). After two years it looks terrible (peeling). I need to re-sand and want to apply an oil product that will keep it looking golden, not silver - maybe with some stain. What do you recommend from your range that would do this?

A. Resene Woodsman Wood Oil would be the only exterior stain we would suggest after removal of the existing film forming stain. The Woodsman stain is non-film forming and designed to erode upon weathering, so you should consider this stain as being high maintenance (i.e. recoat every 2-3 summers).

July 2018

Q. Can I apply Resene SpaceCote Flat or Low Sheen directly over existing ceiling flat or do I have to apply a coat of acrylic undercoat first?

A. Most ceiling paints are high in pigment and low in binder; there are usually no problems overcoating with a waterborne paint of a similar binder to pigment ratio but to be certain a sealer would need to be applied prior to application of a higher sheen paint. If this ceiling is outside of a wet area (e.g. bathroom) apply a coat of Resene Broadwall Waterborne Wallboard Sealer before applying the Resene SpaceCote Flat.
