Work to repair their earthquake-damaged weatherboard bungalow involved (without any previous experience but just heaps of Kiwi can-do attitude) Fleur and her husband, their three young children, and various family members, rolling the house off its damaged foundations.
The builder then put the new foundations down and the following weekend the same family members came together, pushing and pulling, to roll the house back. After that the builder spent five months repairing the existing house and adding on a 70 square metre open-plan kitchen / dining / living area to the northern end of the house. Fleur and her husband took turns working alongside the builder for the duration of the project, tag-teaming in and out.
Once the building was done, Fleur and her husband spent the rest of that month painting the interior of the house in a variety of Resene colours.
The lounge has a feature wall of Resene Dark Knight, with Resene Black on the glass door and Resene Cararra walls. The ceiling and trim are finished in Resene Half Rice Cake which is used for ceilings and trim through the house.
The master bedroom also has a dark feature wall, this time in Resene Tuna, complemented with warm walls in Resene Eighth Canterbury Clay and a striking headboard in Resene Dixie Chick.
Resene Jellybean applied using a damask stencil is joined by Resene Eighth Canterbury Clay in the hallway.
The bedrooms and office all have Resene Cararra walls, with the girl's bedroom having a Resene Tusk ceiling and Resene Impromptu on the bookcase back. In the boys' bedrooms, both have Resene Eighth Canterbury on the walls joining the Resene Cararra. The second boy's bedroom also includes furniture finished in Resene Pearl Lusta and a headboard in Resene Biscay, and curtains made using potato stamps and various Resene testpots. Two of the shadow boxes have been painted with colours mixed from leftover Resene paints and the blue shadow box is painted in Resene Lynch.
The office enjoys a splash of colour with Resene Half Kumutoto on the ceiling and Resene Impromptu on the bookcase back.
Outside, the weatherboards are Resene Triple Ash with Resene Quarter Thorndon Cream trim, Resene Double Masala foundations and a striking front door in Resene Clockwork Orange.
