The Carmichael’s project was to reinvigorate a tired 1970s cedar and concrete block home that had not been repainted for over 20 years and the previous repaint had not been well prepared.
They used Resene EzyPaint virtual painting software to model the repaint of the entire exterior to check that the combinations worked equally well on each elevation. Then they used Resene testpots of several possible colours for the cedar cladding and applied these to a section at both the rear and front of the house to see what would work best. Their eventual debate was between Resene Coast and Resene Elephant.
Resene Coast was chosen for the cedar cladding, complemented by the new COLORSTEEL® roof in Resene Gull Grey, Resene Titania for the concrete block (matching the new garage door) and Resene Wan White for timber framework and eaves.
The final colour choice was to find a bold statement for the new front door. Resene Happy Hour was just right.
The Carmichaels painted the entire paint project themselves. They found the preparation time consuming – because of the state of the cedar it had to be stripped right back and getting into the narrow channels was more than a little awkward. They chose to use the CoolColour version of Resene Coast so applied the recommended white undercoat before the two topcoats.
The new paintwork has retained the 70s character of the home while giving it a modern look.
