Shabby chic on a budget

The previous owners of this farm had lived there for the past 25-30 years and it felt as if it may have been about that long since it had been last updated. Most of the house was different shades of pastel pink with matching wallpaper and lino. Schamet and her husband are not pastel pink fans. Their goal was to bring the chic to the shabby.

Having just purchased the farm and with only a very small budget to work with, how could they transform this tired space?

The answer... Resene paints!

Schamet purchased some shabby chic style wall cabinets online that she painted with Resene paints and hung in the kitchen. She then did colour washes over colour on all the walls in the kitchen and all kitchen cupboards. Because of their small children, the colours chosen are happy, whimsical and easy to keep clean.

Schamet will never forget the look on her young daughters’ faces when they came into the newly painted kitchen! Absolute joy and happiness on their little yet expressive faces. They touched all the cabinets and ran around the kitchen laughing, singing, and dancing!

Success!! Schamet wanted to express happiness and joy with colour and it completely translated!

Each room spoke to Schamet and she listened. She wanted the hallway, for example, to create a feeling of peacefulness and calmness when people enter. They went to Venice for their honeymoon years ago and stayed in the most glorious green and gold hotel room. Schamet wanted to capture the essence of that room, which fills her with feelings of love and romance. She feels she succeeded using Resene Oxley, with a Resene Quarter Parchment wash over the top and Resene Gold metallic over the wood trim. It is sensational!

Schamet has successfully transformed an outdated, tired home into a beautiful work of colour and art and an exploration of whimsical childhood glee! Colour brings happiness, energy and can uplift and transform any mood, any space. 

The kitchen is finished in Resene Paris Daisy and Resene Paris Daisy with a Resene Fruit Salad colour wash. The cabinets were finished in Resene Flash Point, Resene Paris Daisy, Resene Orient, Resene Bianca and Resene Fruit Salad. The dining room is similar to the kitchen walls, with the exception of the Resene Orient with Resene Fruit Salad colour wash, while the bathroom is Resene Mantis, Resene Chelsea Cucumber, Resene Endeavour and Resene Gold Dust.

The colours continue into the children’s room with Resene Wham and Resene Orient, with a mural finished in Resene Paris Daisy, Resene Hippie Blue, Resene Fruit Salad, Resene Flash Point, Resene Gold metallic and Resene Christine.

In the cottage, Resene Hippie Blue is a key part of the colour palette, appearing with Resene Silver Tree in the living space, and in the kitchen with Resene Manz with a Resene Christine colourwash and Resene Bianca on all cabinets and doors. The bedrooms share hues of Resene Parchment (quarter and half strength) complemented by Resene White in one room, Resene Raging Bull colourwashed over yellow in a second room and Resene Fruit Salad with Resene Hippie Blue colourwash in a third room.
