Floor planWhen 50 year old carpet dictates the colour scheme in your room, careful colour selection is called for. Wanting a quick colour change in their dining area, John and Shona had to work not only with dominant carpet but also scrim walls. The scrim kept them to matt/flat finishes to hide surface imperfections. An unusual substrate, the scrim pulls in tight upon drying. With a 12' 6" stud and a crack in the ceiling to repair, a complete morning was spent at the top of the ladder to fill and smooth the crack ready for overcoating. Once the walls and ceiling were well prepared, the surfaces were fully coated in less than 9 hours using Resene Cafe Royale on the walls, Resene Tequila on the ceiling, Resene Egg Sour in the centre and white, Resene Corvette and Resene Mantle on the cornices. The first coat of colour looked terrible, but once the second coat was applied they found the colour was true to form and the whole room scheme came together just as they had imagined.
Years ago they had considered a brown room but discarded the idea. In the end, they managed to start and finish the painting in a day, even finishing in time for a civilised sit down tea at 6pm - a good day's work by anyone's standards! Inspiration gallery 2003
