Art deco painting

Recreate the famous ‘crocus’ pattern of Clarice Cliff using a selection of art deco colours from Resene.

Resene art with Mark Rayner - Project 14

Difficulty level: Moderate

You will need: Artists’ brushes, masking tape, paintbrush, pot for mixing, primed artists’ canvas, Resene Lumbersider tinted to Resene China Ivory, Resene Multishield+ (now Resene Concrete Clear) gloss, Resene testpots in the following colours: Resene Blue Bell, Resene Supernova, Resene Tangerine, Resene Wasabi, Resene Waterborne Colorwood testpot of Resene Oregon, water.

To get the look: Mark painted the surrounding wall with Resene Zylone Sheen tinted to Resene Seashell.

Other ideas: Try the same design using a range of blues from the Resene Multifinish P35 colour palette.

Step 1
Step one
Paint the canvas with two coats of Resene China Ivory using horizontal brushstrokes. Allow at least two hours to dry.
Step 2
Step two
Use the making tape to mask off two 100mm strips at the top and bottom of the canvas, as shown.
Step 3
Step three
Apply one coat of Resene Tangerine to the bottom strip and one coat of Resene Supernova to the top strip. Use light horizontal brushstrokes, allowing the strokes to show through – don’t aim for solid blocks of colour.
Step 4
Step four
Mask a 5mm line along the edge of the bottom strip of colour, as shown. Use a small artists’ brush to paint a line of Resene Tangerine along the lower edge of the masking tape and Resene China Ivory along the upper edge – this will prevent colour from bleeding through.
Step 5
Step five
Repeat step four along the edge of the top strip of colour. Once dry, use an artists’ brush to apply one coat of Resene Wasabi to the masked off lines. Carefully remove the masking tape before the paint dries.
Step 6
Step six
Mix a little water with Resene Tangerine and use a large flat artists’ brush to paint a crocus design on the central band. Repeat using Resene Blue Bell – aim for a watercolour effect, allowing the brushstrokes to show.
Step 7
Step seven
Use a fine-tipped artists’ brush to paint in the foliage with Resene Wasabi. Allow to dry.
Step 8
Step eight
Add a little Resene Colorwood Oregon to some Resene Multishield+ (now Resene Concrete Clear) gloss and mix thoroughly. Apply one coat to the canvas using light horizontal brushstrokes – this effect should ‘age’ the appearance of the canvas. Allow to dry before hanging.
