Psychedelic abstract

Create a vibrant geometric abstract painting using two contrasting Resene colours.

Resene art with Mark Rayner - Project 50

Difficulty level: Moderate

You will need: Artists’ stretched canvas, low tack masking tape, paintbrush, Resene Art Action Quick Dry, Resene testpots of Resene Havoc and Resene Lima.

To get the look: Mark painted the background wall with Resene SpaceCote Flat tinted to Resene White Thunder.

Other ideas: Create a bold orange and blue combination using Resene Daredevil and Resene Elvis.

Step 1
Step one
Prime the canvas with one coat of Resene Art Action Quick Dry and allow two hours to dry.
Step 2
Step two
Apply two coats of Resene Lima to the canvas, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.
Step 3
Step three
Apply a strip of masking tape along each side of the canvas to form a rectangular frame, as shown.
Step 4
Step four
Paint a 3cm stripe of Resene Havoc around the edge of the masking tape. Allow two hours to dry.
Step 5
Step five
Apply a second coat of Resene Havoc and, before this dries, carefully remove the masking tape. Allow two hours to dry.
Step 6
Step six
Apply a second strip of tape, parallel to each side, masking off a smaller rectangle, as shown. Repeat steps four and five using Resene Lima.
Step 7
Step seven
Apply a third strip of tape, parallel to each side, masking off an even smaller rectangle, as shown. Repeat steps four and five using Resene Havoc.
Step 8
Step eight
Apply a fourth strip of tape, parallel to each side, masking off an even smaller rectangle, as shown. Repeat steps four and five using Resene Lima.
