How to make a feature fireplace

Weekend DIY with Mark Rayner – Project 90

Difficulty level: Challenging

You will need

  • Bucket
  • Clean cloths
  • Craft knife
  • Latex wallpaper size
  • Resene Mason Handcrafted Wallpaper* (‘Tosca’ design with Resene Half Nocturnal over a base of Resene Gold Dust)
  • Metal straight edge
  • Paint stirrer
  • Paintbrushes
  • Pencil
  • Plumb line
  • Previously painted interior wall (prepped by cleaning, lightly sanding and then wiping)
  • Sanding block
  • Sandpaper
  • Tape measure
  • Wallpaper paste
  • Wallpaper smoother

*Note:  Other wallpapers may require different hanging and pasting methods so always check manufacturer’s recommendations.

To get the look:  Mark painted the surrounding walls with Resene SpaceCote Flat tinted to Resene Dutch White.

Other ideas:  For a completely different colour combination try this same pattern in Resene Lucky Break over a base of Resene Pure Pewter.

How to make a feature fireplace

Feature fireplace - Step 1 Step one
Apply one coat of Resene Sureseal to the prepped wall and allow to dry. Lightly sand and wipe off any sanding dust with a clean cloth.

Feature fireplace - Step 2 Step two
Following the manufacturer’s recommendations, mix the Latex size and apply one coat to the wall and allow to dry.

Feature fireplace - Step 3 Step three
Mix the wallpaper paste following manufacturer’s recommendations and stir well. Using a tape measure, plumb line and pencil, make a series of light pencil marks vertically on the wall to use as a guide when hanging the first central drop.

Feature fireplace - Step 4 Step four
Using the craft knife and metal straight edge, cut the first drop of Resene wallpaper to size allowing 50mm overhang at either end. Apply an even coat of wallpaper paste to the back of the wallpaper and allow it to rest for 8-10 minutes.

Feature fireplace - Step 5 Step five
Position the first central drop of wallpaper, aligning the edge to the pencil line. Gently smooth the paper flat using the wallpaper smoother, working from the centre of the drop outwards. Wipe off any excess wallpaper paste from the wallpaper using a damp cloth.

Feature fireplace - Step 6 Step six
Carefully trim any excess paper from the top and bottom using the craft knife and metal straight edge.

Feature fireplace - Step 7 Step seven
In the same way, measure, mark and cut the second drop of wallpaper and repeat the process, carefully aligning the pattern.

Feature fireplace - Step 8 Step eight
Hang the third drop of wallpaper in the same way, once again ensuring the pattern correctly aligns. Repeat for the remaining drops and then allow the wallpaper to dry naturally.
