Weekend DIY with Mark Rayner - Project 11

Difficulty level: Moderate

You will need: Terracotta pot with decorative band around the top (ours came from Mitre 10 Mega), Paintbrushes (including artists’ brushes), Potting mix, Resene Enamacryl Metallic tinted to Resene Scotty Silver, Resene Lumbersider tinted to Resene Heather, Resene Multishield+ gloss (now Resene Concrete Clear), Resene paint stirrer, Resene Terracotta Sealer, Resene testpots of Resene Alabaster, Resene Jaguar and Resene Float, Senecio serpens succulent

Top tip: Mark painted the background fence with Resene Waterborne Woodsman penetrating oil stain tinted to Resene Bamboo.

How to paint a metallic pot

Step one
Seal the pot with Resene Terracotta Sealer and allow to dry.

Step two
Apply one coat of Resene Heather to the pot, allowing two hours to dry.

Step three
Stir the Resene Scotty Silver thoroughly with a paint stirrer.

Step four
Apply two coats of Resene Scotty Silver to the pot, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.

Step five
Paint the middle strip of the decorative band with two coats of Resene Float, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.

Step six
Paint the rim and lower strip of the decorative band with two coats of Resene Jaguar, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.

Step seven
Pick out the decorative swirls with two coats of Resene Alabaster, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.

Step eight
Apply one coat of Resene Multishield+ gloss (now Resene Concrete Clear) to the pot and allow to dry before planting up with potting mix and a Senecio serpens succulent.

Other ideas: Create a hot red metallic pot using two coats of Resene Adrenalin Junkie over a basecoat of Resene Old Brick.
