This mural was designed for the Luma Festival of Light family zone Light Camp as an interactive art activity.
Denise Manns was asked to create this on plywood, on an area of 1200mm height by 4800 wide, donating her time and talent and part of the non-profit festival.
This design unifies the landscape of Queenstown, with the Remarkables mountain range, the rivers, and the forest and wildlife towards the ocean, showing landscapes and animals such as the sperm whale and the tuis. This combined with geometries to make a fascinating interactive mural on which everyone can paint in under the neon lights or black light.
The mural was first painted in Resene Lumbersider white to optimise the fluoro effect. The topcoat was completed with the Resene FX Fluoro colour range, choosing to use the full range of five colours – yellow, orange, pink, green and blue. This paint lights up so it looks neon under black light.
Denise had wanted the interactive painting to be perfect and in between the lines. But once it was underway, she had to let go. Just watching the amazement and excitement of every single person that interacted, their faces of joy and how they would ask “can I paint here?” and their eyes wide open when Denise said “yes of course, it is for you to paint” was worth so much more than a rigid approach. The sheer combination of the colours and the efforts of so many meant the finished result was beautiful anyway.
