Wairarapa
The Colombo Road netball courts were in dire need of an infrastructure upgrade.
After 33 years in use the facility was rundown and no longer catered to the needs of today’s netball community so a long process was started to develop appropriate facilities for netball in the Wairarapa that were future focused and could cater to the 1500 people a week that go through it.
After three years of planning and fundraising, this huge community project was able to get started with the community donating money time and materials to make the dream a reality.
Living in a diverse region with its fishing, farming and viticulture communities, the community was keen to bring these to the netball courts. Bright colours were chosen with a palette of Resene Bright Spark, Resene Limerick, Resene Bullseye and Resene Whizz Bang. To add to these bright colours and emphasise their boldness, Resene Eighth Tana, was chosen as a base neutral. All finished in Resene Lumbersider low sheen waterborne paint.
To tie off the project and as a fundraiser, the community was able to purchase wooden battens and engrave them with their names to go all around the decking. This helped bring in community support and has created a striking feature. This really added another feature to this building. The wooden battens were finished in Resene Woodsman Natural wood stain to give it warm touch but not take away from the colour effect of the walls.
It was challenging for the painting contractor when it came time to start painting. With a vague plan of the positioning of colours, it was up to them to make it look as random as possible, without having a pattern sequence.
The outcome was so different to anything else in the Wairarapa that at first a lot of people were not sure it would work and come together – it was the talk of the town for many months. Now when locals drive past or visit they see it as a real feature.
