QCLASS - Queensland Children’s Lung and Sleep Specialists - Woolloongabba

Queensland Children’s Lung and Sleep Specialists (QCLASS) centre was opened in January 2015.

It’s a new medical fit-out for two specialist doctors, Dr Scott Burgess and Dr Sadasivam Suresh who provide high quality holistic care in paediatric respiratory and sleep medicine to children and their families.

Conveniently located one block from the Brisbane Mater Hospital on busy Vulture Street, the building was built in 1905. The 115 square metres of tenancy required five consulting rooms, a reception, patient waiting area, treatment/nurse room and staff kitchen. The fit-out was to establish a medical office to facilitate comprehensive care to children with respiratory and sleep problems in a multidisciplinary setting and promote ongoing health and well-being in partnership with their family.

With the majority of QCLASS patients ranging in age from 0-13 years, the design brief was to not only provide functioning work space for the Doctors, but to provide a fresh, colourful and fun play space for their patients to wait in during their visit to QCLASS. As a new medical health service provider, QCLASS, set up costs had to be kept to a minimum. KoDesigned was employed in partnership with QCLASS and Ulex Constructions to maximise the return for investment with interior finishes and overall interior design.

The tight budget was stretched to include an oversized laser cut jigsaw feature wall in coloured Valchromat MDF in the patient waiting room. This feature was colourful and whimsical and highly visible to busy foot and street traffic of Vulture Street Woolloongabba. This was the main feature for the fit-out and set the tone for all other selections.

Resene colours were instrumental in anchoring this strong and bold feature and carried the colours throughout the fit-out. The hero colour was Resene Koru used on internal corridor doors, a feature wall in the treatment/nurse room and on the exterior entrance, and this became QCLASS’s corporate colour, used in their website, external and internal signage. Resene Amethyst Smoke and Resene Nobel were selected as muddy violets for contrast. Resene Wild Willow was selected as the feature colour for the consulting room, complemented by Resene Quarter Thorndon Cream, the soft neutral used throughout the fit-out. Laminex Hakata, Sphinx and Burnished Plum were also selected to link with the feature Resene colours.
