This small house, around 80 years old, was used as a labour house for families working in a coconut plantation in the old days. The whole family would go out every day with their bags, knifes and axe to cut the meat out of the coconut. The meat was then brought to a dryer where it was dried and from there sold to the oil mill.
The home has withstood several hurricanes. At one point it was debated whether it was worthwhile saving after a hurricane in 2003. The outside wall planks and window style were changed to remove the shutters and lighten the home.
The house is placed on a small hilltop looking down onto the gravel road that passes by enroute to a famous waterfall that draws much tourist traffic. Since the home has been painted in its new colour scheme, many of the tourists now stop to take a photo of this small house on the hilltop.
The owners like colour. The aim was to add colour in a stylish manner. Resene paint has lots of colourful paint; the challenge is to put them together successfully. With the home’s location prone to sea and mould, the exterior areas are all finished in high gloss paints, predominantly Resene Hi-Glo gloss waterborne paint.
The walls are in Resene Persimmon grounded with the cement foundations finished in Resene Waikawa Grey and window and door joinery in Resene Eastern Blue.
