Pink meets blue

From the Resene colour inspiration – latest looks gallery

This delicious living room has a softly Californian retro vibe while using a very up-to-date colour – millennial pink, as represented by Resene Soothe.

An archway, a la 70s hacienda maybe, is painted in Resene Avalanche, while the clean white floor is painted in cool Resene Alabaster.

Accessories are kept minimal with just a coffee table or two, painted in Resene Alabaster and Resene Escapade, and a chunky artisan-looking vase painted in Resene Alabaster. A handful of palm leaves adds a tropical touch, while a long lie-on-me sofa and oversized art print finish the room. A curved pendant lamp, updated with Resene Alabaster, echoes the shape of the painted arch.

Mood board: A graphic feel for a simple room with a background in Resene Alabaster and A4 paint samples in Resene Escapade (light blue), Resene Sooth (pink) and Resene Avalanche (navy).  Accessories: Dax Sofa in Dusty Blue, from Me And My Trend, High Rise Framed Print, from Shut the Front Door, Kaya pink cushion from Country Road, www.countryroad.co.nz Kerrigan mug in Still water and Rose each from Freedom Furniture.

The room shows how pink has become so much more than a colour confined only to girls’ bedrooms.

The surge of millennial pink into our current culture has opened the door for androgynous and grown-up pinks of many incarnations, from blushed creams through to dusky salmons and wafer pinks.

Watch in coming months as millennial pink morphs into more peach and nude tones and away from the rose-petal shades we’ve seen in recent years.

Pink is surprisingly versatile when it comes to colour partnerships and uses. In its palest, duskiest form it can be used very successfully as a main neutral.

In this room, military blues – the Resene Avalanche arch, the sofa and the Resene Escapade coffee table – add a more serious note to the scheme while still allowing it to look light and slightly playful.
