Mural detail

Create a simple geometric mural. Using a combination of simple shapes such as circles and lines, you can create an eye catching wall mural. Draw freehand with a pencil or trace around existing found objects to make up the shapes. This is something the kids can easily get involved with. Let the kids help with choosing a colour palette then pick up testpots and get painting. Paint around the pencil outlines first, then fill in – you will need at least 2 coats.

Library and work station

Encourage reading and creativity with a mini library and work/play station. Hang up shelves or picture ledges at a height that your kids can reach. We made a focal point of this corner by creating a vertical stripe through the middle of the shelves, painting the left side in Resene Island Spice and the right side in Resene Coral Tree. Display your kids favourite books on the shelves and create a seating area, we used a toybox for storage, seating and also as a step ladder to the top shelf.

Wallpaper wardrobe

Add a beautiful wallpaper to make a big impact. This is also a great starting point to create a colour palette for the entire room, choosing colours from the wallpaper.
If you don’t have a built in wardrobe, there are so many great options for kids to chose from. You could paint up a house shaped wardrobe like this, or upcycle a free standing wardrobe from trademe – either way choose a great colour and make a feature of all the cute clothes and shoes.
Another great weekend project idea is to go opp shopping with your kids and upcycle a small piece of furniture. We found this little round trolley, tightened up a few screws, painted the legs in Resene Apple Blossom and styled up with books and toys.

Bedroom set up

For a simple makeover idea, pick up some new bedding and mix and match with your existing. Have fun with colours, patterns, and try mixing up adult bedding with the kids range for a more sophisticated look.
If you don’t want to wallpaper a whole wall you could add it to the doors of a storage unit or frame up and large piece of wallpaper and hang as art.
