Paint it black

Some interior decorators might describe it as the ultimate sin, and you'd be forgiven for thinking that this trend could make your home seem dark and gloomy. In reality, painting interior walls or doors black can be a chic and modern way to add an edge to your home.

If you're looking for new interior decorating ideas, adding a touch of black to your home could be just the update you're looking for. Black paint, wallpaper and accessories can all make a room seem sleeker and more elegant.

If you're considering using a lot of black inside your home, it may pay to consider the size of your rooms and how much natural light there is. If your house has high ceilings or large windows, it will probably lend itself to darker styling more than smaller rooms with less natural light.

If you're hesitant to introduce such a dark hue into your home, consider starting off with a black feature wall, black furniture or a handy wall in Resene Blackboard Paint. You can also pair black walls with white accents and furniture for a classic, monochromatic look. The white can break up the darkness that black introduces to the room, and if you're feeling really brave you can add some bright colours in the form of throw cushions and other decor.

Another way to update a room is to change the colour of its skirting boards and trims. Painting these features a black shade, such as Resene Black Magic, could be a great way to frame a room, and add drama without overwhelming smaller or darker rooms.

If you're a book lover, consider adding some black to your home library or study. You could cover your bookcases in the shade, or even just paint the shelves. Furniture, light fittings and window frames can all benefit from a colour update every now and then, so if you're stuck for new ideas you might want to coat them in a glossy black.
