Fluoro fashion in your home

If you've got your finger on the fashion pulse, you'll know neon colours have been huge on runways and in stores recently. The trend has been around for at least a year and doesn't look like it's losing momentum, with colours trickling down into furnishings and home decor.

Add a little bit of brightness to your home with these tips – if you dare!

Curtains

Curtains are an easy way to add a bit of flair to your home, and they require less commitment than other more permanent renovations. If you're colour-shy, look for a print that has only a splash of neon, like Resene Abstraction – Flame. With mid-century design influences, this modern curtain has bright pops of colour against a neutral linen background. Acid yellow and vibrant green feature in the subtle pattern, which would look as good paired with stark white and sleek stainless steel furnishings as it would more bold colours and patterns.

Block colours

Colour blocking has been huge in fashion circles for years, and it has now made its way into interior design. One particularly stunning way to incorporate this into your home is by painting one feature wall in a bright neon shade like Resene Spring Fever, a sharp sulphur yellow with citrus undertones.

Keep the rest of the walls in a neutral cream or white hue, and let the colour blocking begin with furniture. A bright prink or yellow couch would look perfect when teamed with cushions in a contrasting shade. Paint wooden furniture, candlesticks, bookcases and other objects in licks of neon, like Resene Big Bang. The fluoro orange has hints of red that will make any item pop, so use it with caution!

Photo frames can also be painted to keep up the colour blocking theme. Try Resene Smitten, a beautifully bold fuchsia pink that demands attention. This shade works especially well with acid greens, yellows and oranges, so don't be afraid to mix and match!

Artwork

If you're too shy to go full-on fluoro, start with small touches against a neutral background. Screen prints and graphic images featuring glowing colours can look great against stark white walls, as it allows the colour and art to be the focal point. Take things a step further with a neon tapestry to hang as a backdrop in your bedroom.

Kitchen

Your kitchen isn't the typical place to experiment with colour, but kitchen drawers and cupboards are a great place to start. Paint wooden areas in different neon colours to create a fun and chic space for you and your guests. This works as well in modern homes as it does in vintage-style bungalows, especially when teamed with contrasting knobs and handles.
