Create this eye-catching piece of outdoor art using a selection of fabulous Resene colours.

Resene art with Mark Rayner - Project 59

Difficulty level: Moderate

You will need: Piece of treated plywood, paintbrushes (including a medium artists’ brush), Resene Quick Dry, Resene Lumbersider tinted to Resene Seagrass, Resene testpots of Resene Alabaster, Resene All Black, Resene Bowie, Resene Elvis, Resene Monza, Resene Parsley and Resene Space Cadet.

To get the look: Mark painted the background fence with Resene Waterborne Woodsman tinted to Resene Woody Bay.

Other ideas: Use the same painted mosaic technique to decorate the top of a coffee table and for added protection finish off with two coats of Resene Aquaclear satin.

Step one
Apply one coat of Resene Quick Dry to the front, sides and back of the plywood panel and allow two hours to dry.

Step two
Apply two coats of Resene Seagrass to the front, sides and back of the plywood panel, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.

Step three
To create a mosaic effect, apply generous ‘dabs’ of Resene Parsley to form a line around the outer edge of the plywood panel. Allow some of the background colour to show through as ‘grout’.

Step four
In the same way, paint in the sails of the boat using ‘dabs’ of Resene Alabaster.

Step five
Paint a line of small ‘dabs’ of Resene All Black between the sails to represent the mast of the boat.

Step six
In the same way, paint in a small flag at the top of the mast and the hull of the boat using ‘dabs’ of Resene Monza.

Step seven
Paint in the sea area using a combination of random ‘dabs’ of Resene Space Cadet and Resene Elvis.

Step eight
Paint in the sky area with ‘dabs’ of Resene Bowie. Allow all paint colours to dry for two hours before hanging your outdoor masterpiece.
