3D rose painting

Use self-hardening clay and Resene testpots to transform an old picture frame into a fabulous 3D rose painting.

Resene art with Mark Rayner - Project 06

Difficulty level: Moderate

You will need: Old wooden frame with hardboard backing, paintbrushes, Resene Multishield+ (now Resene Concrete Clear) Gloss, Resene Quick Dry Acrylic Primer Undercoat, Resene testpots in the following colours: Resene Black, Resene Bright Red, Resene English Holly, Resene Red Berry and Resene Turtle Green, self-hardening modelling clay (Das pronto is ideal).

To get the look: Mark painted the surrounding wall with Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen tinted to Resene Soft Pink.

Other ideas: Use Resene Alabaster to create a classic white rose.

Step 1

Roll several small balls of clay and flatten out with the palm of your hand to form a ring of outer petals, pressing them firmly onto the hardboard backing.
Step 2

Apply a second ring of petals, as shown.
Step 3

Continue to build up successive rings of petals, making them smaller as you get towards the centre. Leave overnight for the clay to harden.

Paint the flower picture and wooden frame with one coat of Resene Quick Dry Acrylic Primer Undercoat. Allow to dry.
Step 5

Paint the rose with two coats of Resene Red Berry. Allow to dry.
Step 6
Step six
Paint the wooden frame with two coats of Resene Black and the background with two coats of Resene Turtle Green. Allow to dry.
Step 7
Step seven
Add highlights to the rose petals with Resene Bright Red and some texture to the background with Resene English Holly. Allow to dry.
Step 8
Step eight
Apply a coat of Resene Multishield+ (now Resene Concrete Clear) Gloss to the painting and frame to intensify colours and create a glossy finish to the artwork. Allow to dry.
