Weekend DIY with Mark Rayner - Project 10

Difficulty level: Moderate

You will need: 20mm plywood or MDFcut to the following dimensions: 70mm x 350mm (x3) 70mm x 300mm (x2), 25mm nails, 40mm panel pins, Hammer, Paintbrush, Panel pins, PVA glue, Pencil, Resene Enamacryl tinted to Resene Daredevil, Resene paint stirrers (x2), Resene Quick Dry, Saw, Sandpaper, Screwdriver, Screws, Set square, Tape measure

Top tip: Mark painted the background wall with Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen tinted to Resene Bowie.

How to make shelf to store your mugs

Step one
Measure and mark the plywood or MDF to the dimensions listed above.

Step two
Cut the pieces of plywood or MDF to size using a sharp saw.

Step three
Smooth any rough edges with sandpaper.

Step four
Attach pieces together, as shown, using panel pins and PVA glue. Use a set square to ensure corners are at right angles.

Step five
Fix two paint stirrers to the back of the shelf unit, as shown, using 25mm nails and PVA glue. Allow the glue to dry.

Step six
Apply one coat of Resene Quick Dry to the shelf unit and allow two hours to dry.

Step seven
Apply two coats of Resene Daredevil to the shelf unit, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.

Step eight
Attach the shelf unit to a wall, fixing small screws through the hole of each paint stirrer, as shown.

Other ideas: Create a kitchen herb rack in the same way and finish off with Resene Enamacryl tinted to Resene Kea.
