Dining room

Transform a tired vinyl-papered dining room into a warm and welcoming space using a bold two colour effect.

Ceiling:	Tongue and groove, previously painted with waterborne ceiling paint
Woodwork:	Previously painted with waterborne flat and semi-gloss paint
Walls:	Covered with vinyl wallpaper, lifting in places

You will need

Bucket with warm soapy water
Clean cloths
Craft knife
Dropcloth
Metal ruler
Paint roller and tray

Paint stirrer
Paintbrushes
Plasterboard filler
Resene Lustacryl tinted to Resene Shiraz
Resene Quick Dry

Resene SpaceCote Flat tinted to Resene Chardonnay
Resene SpaceCote Flat tinted to Resene Egg Sour
Resene SpaceCote Flat tinted to Resene Shiraz

Sandpaper
Scraper for filling

Instructions

Handy hints: To help paint dry open the windows and make sure the air circulates. On a cold or damp day consider using a fan heater or dehumidifier while painting. Using a brush to paint a tongue and groove ceiling will help get the paint into the joins between the wood.
Top tip: Always choose the right roller sleeve for the right surface and paint – if in doubt, check with your local Resene ColorShop staff.
To get the look: Mark previously varnished the floor with Resene Polythane clear polyurethane.
Other ideas: For a different effect on a feature wall, choose patterned wallpaper or Resene Enamacryl Metallic paint.

Step one
Wash and rinse all surfaces and allow to dry.

Step two
Lightly sand all woodwork to ‘key’ the surfaces and then wipe clean with a cloth.

Step three
Using the craft knife and ruler, carefully cut thin strips of the wallpaper where the paper may be lifting at a join.

Step four
Peel away these strips of paper.

Step five
Apply one coat of Resene Vinyl Wallpaper Sealer to the wallpaper and allow to dry.

Step six
Carefully fill the thin gaps between the wallpaper using plasterboard filler. Allow filler to dry.

Step seven
Carefully sand the filled areas, as shown.

Step eight
Spot prime the filled areas with Resene Quick Dry and allow to dry.

Step nine
Carefully stir the Resene SpaceCote Flat tinted to Resene Egg Sour.

Step ten
Apply two coats of Resene Egg Sour to the ceiling, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.

Step eleven
Carefully stir the Resene SpaceCote Flat tinted to Resene Chardonnay.

Step twelve
Apply two coats of Resene Chardonnay to the walls and woodwork (except for the feature wall), allowing two hours for each coat to dry.
