Habitat bright ideas with Fleur Thorpe – DIY projects
Make your favourite planted pot a feature with this cute cube plant stand. Paint it to match your pot or add a highlight Resene colour.

Step 1
Start by measuring the diameter to your plant pot at the widest point and cut 8 lengths of wood to be a bit shorter than the diameter of the pot. Fleur’s pot has a diameter of 16.5cm and because the sides are reasonably vertical, Fleur made the length of her wood only very slightly smaller at 16.25cm. If your pot tapers out more gradually, you could make your wood lengths shorter. The shorter the wood lengths, the higher the pot will sit in the stand. Cut eight lengths for the top and bottom squares (Fleur cut hers at 16.25cm) and four lengths for the uprights (Fleur cut hers at 17.5cm).
Step 2
Use sandpaper to sand off any rough ends and prime the wood with Resene Quick Dry. Once this has dried, give it a light sand with a fine grit sandpaper.
Step 3
Paint two sides of all the wood with Resene Shilo.
Step 4
Use wood glue to assemble your cube and make sure that the two pink painted sides are facing inwards. The four longer lengths are the four uprights and the shorter lengths form the top and bottom squares. Drill pilot holes and then screw the cube together. It’s a good idea to use a countersink to get a flush finish with the screws.
Step 5
Fill the screw holes with filler. Once this is dry, sand down the filler, prime the filled patch with Resene Quick Dry, and finish by painting over the remaining sides with two coats of Resene Lemon Ginger.
Top tip
Finish your cube plant stand with a Resene FX Metallic finish to add shimmer and reflect more light around your space.
