From habitat magazine - issue 14, editorial
It doesn’t seem right to stick to just the one colour when Resene has designed so many delicious and exciting shades over the years. Sure, one colour is easy, and safe. But let’s rebel a little against the ‘less is more’ maxim, and splash it about a bit.
Take our cover, for example, which shows an easy-to-achieve but striking look using tonal stripes. See "why just one?" for more examples of how you can use a selection of colours (even neutrals) to good effect.
Creating a palette of colours is an exhilarating process with inspiration coming from many sources. Perhaps it’s a painting, as with the purple kitchen owners in "the bold and beautiful". Or the environment, as with the architect-designed award-winner in "flexible futures". Or from a feeling of nostalgia, as with the home in "making vintage a virtue". This issue, we also asked various interior designers from different places to create a colour palette that they feel reflects their own part of the world. There are some wonderful results, in "the colours of our world".
And for sheer courage, you have to commend the owners of the purple kitchen mentioned earlier and the owners of the yellow house in our garden feature in "out of the square". They not only chose the adventurous route with amazing results, but chose to play out their colour fantasies on the two areas of the house you can’t easily or cheaply paint over if you don’t like it. Whether it’s an experimental feature wall, or a whole exterior – live a little.

Significant birthdays come and go, and some of us may wish to ignore them but as Resene turns 65 this year, it’s definitely a time of celebration. A 65th birthday may be the traditional retirement age, but Resene is far from retiring! It’s been a whirl of innovation and colour and as we look back and celebrate just how far we’ve come in 65 years, we also look forward with anticipation.
Started all those years ago in a garage by Ted Nightingale, Resene has since developed a myriad of products, thousands of fashion colours and spread its wings well beyond the shores of New Zealand to Australia and the Pacific Islands. Our paint and colour technology also reaches far flung shores beyond those.
Resene is a great example of what can grow from the most humble beginnings with passion, energy, enthusiasm, innovation and sheer hard work. And it’s all thanks to you – our customers, our specifiers, our suppliers, our staff and our families – for making Resene what it is today. So thank you from all of us at Resene – we wouldn’t be here celebrating 65 years without you.
