A short-stay rental for visitors from home and abroad gets brightened up with some bold, beautiful shades.

Transforming her one-bedroom property to a short-term rental “opened up a world of possibilities” for Alisha Roff.

“I wanted to create a fun, uplifting, creative, restorative place for all kinds of people to come and stay,” she says. “While the options were endless, the budget was not, so I decided to use colourful paint to create a lasting impact.”

Using Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen paint for the project, the Palmerston North local started with a “warm, embracing white” of Resene Half Bianca on all the walls, ceilings and trims to set the backdrop. Inspired by the mural in the living room, Alisha decided to use that dreamy landscape as the colour palette for the rest of the house.

In the bedroom, she painted the wall panelling in Resene Just Right and used colour blocking to great effect in the bathroom with Resene Fuel Yellow to create a sunny yellow arch. In the toilet, arches of Resene Just Right and Resene Surfie Green help add cohesion to the home.

Alisha also upcycled all the wooden furniture in the flat and painted the accessories, pots and little animals to match. The kitchen stools were painted in Resene Surfie Green, a vibrant sea green, Resene Material Girl, a youthful hot pink, and Resene Fuel Yellow. These colours help complement the Resene Indian Ink of the kitchen island. Resene Colour Enhance mixed with Resene Colorwood was used to rejuvenate the kitchen benchtop, adding colour to the natural wood grain. Now the short-stay rental is decked out with colour and bookings to boot.

“With a little bit of money and a lot of hard but rewarding work it has paid off. This is a happy little place to come for a maybe not so ‘boring’ stay in Palmerston North,” Alisha says.
