The historic Embassy theatre in Wellington was refurbished in time for the screening of the first Lord of the Rings movie.
From the supply of paint on set to the refurbishment of the Embassy theatre, Resene was involved in the Lord of the Rings trilogy every step of the way.
The premiere of any long-awaited movie is a major event. And it's not just the red carpet that is rolled out for the stars. For the screening of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, Wellington's Embassy theatre was given an extensive facelift. Resene, the supplier of paints used during filming of the trilogy, was closely involved in the refurbishment. Marketing manager Karen Warman says staff assisted with such diverse tasks as identifying the original Embassy paint colours, developing electronic renders, writing paint specifications and assisting with colour selection.
"Resene staff also had to satisfy some unusual requests, such as how to create mouldy finishes. Mould is normally a problem Resene tries to fix, not create," she says.
To provide maximum weather protection for the heritage building, the Embassy was repainted using Resene X-200 weathertight membrane. Warman says the colour palette was chosen to enhance the building's natural heritage features. The main front facade was finished in Resene Sidecar, complemented by Resene Scotch Mist and Resene Saltpan. Windows were painted in Resene Hot Chile to enliven the neutral backdrop. The interior of the theatre features Resene Spanish White, chosen to offset the lavish furnishings.
In recognition of the enthusiasm generated by the Lord of the Rings trilogy, Resene also formulated a new shade of yellow-green called Resene Wellywood.
Warman says the Resene Total Colour System offers an extensive range of colours for any project. However, the company will also mix custom colours for clients if preferred.
The RenderRite service used to determine the colours for the Embassy uses a combination of Resene EzyPaint and Photoshop technologies to deliver fully rendered images from original images. These help clients visualise the finished effect of different colour schemes.
"Following a client's instructions, Resene staff will scan, path and re-colour selected areas of your image in the Resene colours of your choice," says Warman. "Or, clients can take the hands-on approach and carry out their own virtual painting. The ability to 'see' the finished project takes the guesswork out of colour selection."
All Resene paints are available from Resene ColorShops.
