A graphic wall statement and dynamic colour palette create a fun and funky room
This dynamic space can be adapted to suit kids of all ages, from toddler to teen. We have used the duvet cover as the inspiration for the design and colour palette, creating a space that is practical, fun and oozes personality.
Walls and floor painted in Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen and Resene Lumbersider in Resene ‘Black White’, Resene ‘Fountain Blue’ and Resene ‘Surrender’. Shelf and drawers painted in Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen in Resene ‘Double Cod Grey’. Wall hooks from Kmart, painted in Resene Lumbersider ‘Fountain Blue’, Resene ‘Double Cod Grey’ and Resene ‘Fizz’.
If plain walls are not your cup of tea and you are keen to be a little adventurous in your child’s room, try a simple but effective paint design on the wall. Use this image (right) as a guide and mark out the lines with painter’s masking tape. Painting a large triangle (with its point ending in the corner) and then repeating the colour on the side walls – as we have done with the white triangle – creates a cool design element.
For an accent colour to have maximum impact, you ideally need to use it in the room at least three times and at three different heights. In this scheme, Resene ‘Fountain Blue’ appears high up on the feature wall, at mid-height on the wall hook and duvet cover, and then in the rug and storage box at floor level. We’ve followed a similar pattern with the bold yellow of Resene ‘Fizz’. If you stick to this formula for accent colours, you will be guaranteed a beautifully balanced room.
A bedside table or unit is always handy for placing a drink, book and lamp next to the bed.
One of the most under-utilised areas in kids’ rooms is the vertical space. A simple way to get clothes and bags off the floor is to install hooks, which not only tidies the room but makes things easier to find.
Some form of shelving unit for storing toys, games and books is a must. Here we painted both the bedside table and bookshelf in Resene ‘Double Cod Grey’. Painting these items in a dark colour makes the items displayed on them stand out.
“Tip: Paint some simple hooks to further reinforce your colour scheme.
You can also paint a bedside table and shelves – as we have done here – to tie the colours of your child’s room together.”
