Hanging wallpaper isn't as hard as you think. Before you start your next home renovations project, make sure you've read through the following tips.
Any DIY expert will tell you it's a good idea to have all your tools in one place before you start the job. The exact tools depend on the type of paper you hang, but basics include paint brushes, scissors, and a good knife with a sharp blade. See the Resene wallpaper checklist for a handy guide to make sure you have everything.
Along with these, set aside a rule, wallpaper trough, a good smoothing brush and some adhesive and sealer. Finally, make sure to have a ladder, bucket and drop cloth handy.
Make sure the surface you're covering is free from dirt, dust and grime. You'll want it to be dry before wallpapering, and all existing wallpaper should be removed before applying the new set.
Once wallpaper has been removed, sand the wall with 100 grit sandpaper and then dust the walls to ensure as smooth a surface as possible.
If the walls have previously been coated with an enamel paint, as is often the case in kitchens and bathrooms, wash the surface of the wall then rinse with clean water. After this has dried, sand the wall with sandpaper and then dust it.
When hanging wallpaper, remember to always strike a new vertical line on each wall. Use your wallpaper smoothing brush when applying the paper, and move from the centre of the sheet to the edges so you can reduce air bubbles.
If creases or wrinkles develop in your paper, pull it back from the bottom and slowly smooth it back into place. Trim it when you're happy with its position.
