New Zealand Fish and Wildlife.
Background to mural creation:
New Zealand fish and wildlife dominate the sightlines of the Alpha
Support Centre Trust in Christchurch. A bright and coloured atmosphere
for disabled clients has been created with a scene showing sea,
land and fauna. Measuring 12 metres x 5.5 metres, the mural is
the pride and joy of the Alpha Trust who are committed to providing
vocational and recreational services to people with an intellectual
disability. The entire work took about 33 days to complete (260
hours). Jim counts himself lucky to have had a helping hand from
two clients (Ben and Trevor) who did a lot of the basic work with
rollers and brushes. Jim had only an extension ladder to reach
the highest parts of the mural and since working on this mural
has lost his fear of heights!
Jim is employed primarily as a community support worker/caregiver but also officially as Alpha's resident artist.
