Our Awa. Our Maunga.
Background to mural creation:
Our awa Awapoka.
Our awa is not a big awa. It was manmade, by our ancestors, by hand. It was made to let the water out of the valley so the land wasn’t a swamp anymore, so kumara could grow. This is where the name Te Kao comes from.
Our maunga Tawhitirahi The name Tawhitirahi has to do with canoes from Hawaiki. It is a Pa that hols stories and history. From Tawhitirahi you can see both oceans. It’s the spiritual connection from the land to the heavens.
