Background to mural creation:
This school is recently built and the artwork has been created to show who the students and school are. The front of the school is Te Wharenui o Oturu. The huge Pohutukawa has the ‘value birds’ perched inside to represent tikanga, values:

• Manaakitanga, Respect/Hospitality o The kiwi cares for Tane’s forests by eating ground dwelling pests.
• Kaitiakitanga, Guardianship o Tui are full of life, and confidence a symbol of spiritual harmony.
• Ako, Learning o Ruru are a symbol of wisdom and protection.
• Rangatiratanga, Leadership o Kukupa grows the Mauri of Tane by spreading the seeds of the forests.
• Whanaungatanga, Collaboration o Piwakawaka are playful and friendly; Welcomed Kupe and inspired his haka.

The whole school was involved in creating the mural, from ideas, design, woodworking and painting.
