Historical theme of Owairoa in the form of a vibrant landscape showcasing the view from Stockade Hill, with NZ flora and fauna that was abundant in Owairoa/Paparoa-Howick at the time of the early settlers.
Background to mural creation:
The mural was created to show children and the community the history of the local area. Owairoa is ‘the place of the long river’. It was named after the view from Stockade Hill towards Waiheke because it looks ‘like a river’. There was controversy when Governor Grey replaced Owairoa with the English name Howick in 1847.
