Chatting children – reflecting what we do at school.
Background to mural creation:
‘Chatting children’ is an adaptation of Philip Trustum’s ‘Gossiping Women’.
The students had been looking at Trustum’s work in class and had already each made a single piece of art (using his style). The students had loved the whole process of adding random shapes and colours, so when the opportunity came to create a mural, they chose to use his style.
At first they found it difficult because they wanted a mural that would reflect the school, the children, the teachers and the beautiful community and setting in Eastbourne – a LOT to fit in!
Then they chose to make it more compact and just base it around the amazing relationships between student/teacher and student/student.
At Muritai the key competencies are valued – Relating to Others, Thinking, Participating and Contributing, and Managing Self.
They decided to have different characters doing things that are done at school, painting, gardening and relating to others. On the first board there is a female teacher literally ‘pouring’ knowledge onto the child’s flower and helping and bloom and grow.
On the second there are two children interacting with each other; they are seemingly different but still get on.
On the last board there is another teacher playing a game with a student.
If you step back and look at all three murals put together, you can see the two teachers on the outer boards guarding and supporting the students, giving them a safe and healthy environment to learn in.
