Team:
Chris Wilkie (lead artist), Tuppy and Danny Kaiawe, June Heihei, junior members of the Ngati Rehia Waka Ama Club, Te Tii community.
Accessible to public:
Yes.
Mural theme:
Celebrating early history and more recent history through the arrival in New Zealand of ocean going waka and Christianity at Marsden Cross. Acknowledgement of that history by local youth.
Background to mural creation:
The graffiti covered shed was an eyesore and with an upcoming Marsden bi-centennial, this was an opportunity for local communities to unite and create a welcoming atmosphere for the many visitors to the area. The exuberance of the local under 16 Waka Ama team, after winning the national championship in 2012, epitomises the positive attitude prevailing on Purerua Peninsula.
