Background to mural creation:
Room 10 loved the process of producing this mural for the space outside their classroom. Caleb Ewen (a dad of one of the students) was asked to come in and help produce the mural. He was with the team for the whole journey and helped come up with the concept, planning and sharing his knowledge to produce something that the whole team are very proud of.
Caleb was sure that he wanted all children involved in producing the mural. The class of 28 was split into smaller groups and the main focus was on working together, sharing ideas, compromising and working on each other’s strengths. This mural is more than just art; it has taught the team so much more.
The class decided to make a mural that depicts their interpretation of the separation of ranginui (sky father) and papatuanuku (earth mother). On the left hand side tanemahuta (god of the forest) is standing strong and tawhirimatea (god of wind) is still angry at the top. The other four square panels are each group’s interpretation of how the world would look at different stages of the separation.
