With an interest in art stemming back to drawing and colouring as a child through to art in High School, it was the suggestion of the art teacher to abandon a career in hairdressing in favour of art. Studies at the Design & Arts College, Christchurch and a Bachelor of Maori Visual Arts from Massey University, Palmerston North have helped develop these early artistic talents.
A love of combining layers of abstraction, colour and pattern with figurative elements is characteristic of these artworks, a style which is still emerging and developing. Much of the work is personal or connected to notions of identity and belonging.
Inspiration comes from personal experiences, heritage and personal journey. The artistic process often begins with a whakatauki or proverb.
As well as painting on board and canvas, previous art has included painting murals (indoors and outdoors), windows, backdrops and commissions.
The Resene colours work well with the art with its fluid consistency, ability to mix easily and dry at a workable speed. It’s vibrant and durable with favourite colours of Resene Midnight Express, Resene West Side and Resene Tree Frog featuring in the layers of the paintings.
A wide range of artists are using Resene paints in their work, on everything from interior paintings to tactile artworks and mural masterpieces.
