Screen time

Hide untidy corners with a trellis garden screen that can be removed for easy access.

You will need: Two panels of expandable trellising (expanded to width and height required), tanalised wood for the frame (length required x 45mm x 20mm), four slats from old wooden blind or similar, four square hooks and eyes, staple gun, frost cloth, nails, hammer, pliers, drill and paint brushes.

Resene Lumbersider satin acrylic paint tinted to Resene Alabaster and Resene Porsche, Resene Enamacryl Metallic paint in Resene Bullion.

Step one
Spaces beneath decks are dumping grounds for old pots, bags of compost and wheelbarrows. A removable screen will cover the mess and allow for easy access.

Step two
Make two frames with the tanalised wood to the size of each panel of trellising, then fix with nails.

Step three
Expand the trellising to fit the frames and place on top, with the back showing. Note: any type of trellising can be used, cut to the required size.

Step four
Nail the trellising to the frames, leaving plenty of room around the frames for the wooden slats and frost cloth to be stapled.

Step five
Screw two eyes to the top of each frame. A simple hook and eye system allows for easy removal of the frames – one or two frames at a time.

Step six
Drill holes into the side of the deck at corresponding lengths to the eyes and screw the hooks into the holes, using pliers if necessary.

Step seven
Paint the trellis with Resene Lumbersider in Alabaster. Paint the frame with a basecoat of Resene Lumbersider in Porsche, then a topcoat of Resene Enamacryl Metallic in Bullion.

Step eight
Lay the frost cloth over the back of the trellis, place a wooden slat on the top and bottom ends of the frame, and staple in place. Cut away excess cloth.
