It’s easy to create your own colourful bird house from an old wooden box and some Resene testpots.
Top tip: Make sure your bird house is securely fixed to a fence or tree and is positioned in a sheltered spot away from direct sun and safely out of the way of any cats.
Handy hint: Use a small paintbrush to prime and paint the grooves of the box.
How to build a bird house:
Step one
Before you begin, get an adult to saw approximately 8cm from one end of the wooden wine box lid, as shown.
Step two
Prime one side of the lid and the outside of the wooden box using Resene Quick Dry and allow to dry.
Step three
Apply two coats of Resene Wild Side to the outside of the box, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.
Step four
Apply two coats of Resene Now or Never to the primed side of the lid, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.
Step five
Paint three bird shapes on the lid, as shown, using Resene Coconut Ice, Resene Tropical and Resene Drop Dead Gorgeous. Once dry, apply a second coat of each colour and allow to dry.
Step six
Paint in the beaks and eyes using Resene Happy and Resene Space Cadet, as shown. Allow the paint to dry.
Step seven
Slide the lid into position, as shown opposite, leaving an 8cm entrance at one end.
