Give your furry best friend a shaded and comfy outdoor nap spot.

How to build a sun shelter for your dog

As seen in kiwigardener

You will need

Materials

  • 45mm x 45mm timber in the following lengths:
    • 720mm (x 4)
    • 870mm (x 4)
    • 840mm (x 3)
  • Canvas fabric cut to 930mm x 1500mm
  • Pallet
  • Resene Waterborne Woodsman penetrating oil stain. We used Resene English Walnut.
  • Screws
  • Waterproof dog bed
  • Waterproof stick-on Velcro hook and loop strips (x 4)

Tools

  • Drill
  • Drop saw
  • Paintbrush
  • Pencil
  • Scissors
  • Tape measure

*Adjust measurements as needed to suit your pallet (ours measured 1150mm x 930mm).

Top tip:  If your dog bed doesn’t completely cover the pallet, consider attaching plywood or decking to the top of the base to protect your pet’s paws.

Here's another idea:  Extend the fabric down to the base on the two ends, add some colourful bunting and place a bean bag inside to create a summer reading nook/playhouse for the kids to enjoy.

Instructions

How to build a sun shelter for your dog:

Sun shelter - step 1 Step one
Cut both ends of the four 720mm lengths of timber at 60 degrees (parallel cuts). Also cut off one end of the four 870mm lengths at 30 degrees.

Sun shelter - step 2 Step two
Using two 720mm lengths and two 870mm lengths, assemble and screw together one end frame, as shown. Repeat to create a second frame.

Sun shelter - step 3 Step three
Join the two frames together by attaching three 840mm lengths between them with screws.

Sun shelter - step 4 Step four
Place the frame over the pallet and screw all four legs to the base.

Sun shelter - step 5 Step five
Apply two coats of Resene Waterborne Woodsman penetrating oil stain to the frame, allowing each coat to dry.

Sun shelter - step 6 Step six
Attach the Velcro strips to the four corners of the frame as shown. Pull the canvas tight over the frame to ensure a good fit when it sticks to the exposed adhesive backing of the Velcro strips.

Sun shelter - step 7 Step seven
Lay a waterproof dog bed on the base and you have a shaded and comfy spot that is sure to get your dog’s tail wagging.
