“Resene’s Grape Escape colour is a source of inspiration itself. Immediately I thought of the hints of purply hues that peel through in the last minutes of a sunset. It triggered a memory relating to the sunset I observed at Ambury Farm almost a year ago, and it was nothing but a wholesome good time with my siblings. But I also remember feeling wowed not only because of the Instagram-worthy potential this sunset offered, but because of the unimaginable and mysterious power and force behind it. It’s an enigma. That’s nature in its authenticity – nature doing its thing, uninterrupted while we watch is awe and admiration.

I’ve also drawn inspiration from the colour, Resene Grape Escape, which is a play on words of the phrase ‘[the] great escape’, commonly used in reference to breaking free or to getting out of danger of a lace that keeps you trapped. I’ve kept this in mind with reference to the Kereru, a bird native to New Zealand, and how while it’s not endangered, still has its fair share of threats due to predation and human settlements. So the Kereru hasn’t completed escape danger. From the Kereru, I’ve taken inspiration from the shape of the sharp division from the wing to its chest which makes the purple shades of its feather stand out. I was further inspired by the uncut amethyst. My design features elements of uncut amethyst in its natural, raw state with asymmetric lines and geometric panels.

Resene Grape Escape invokes mystery, strength and nostalgia which is the overall aim of my design. To reflect some of the features and elements reflected in my mood board but also the colour and name itself. My design is to appear mysterious and somewhat unassuming and simple, yet if you9 look closer you’ll see the finer details.”
