Colour: Resene Buttercup

"The inspiration for my mood board simply came from finding images that I found compelling. My B.A. is in Theatre Studies so I leaned quite naturally towards lighting scenography and static images from some very design-heavy theatre work. I quickly noticed a trend through all the images I had selected. They either played thoughtfully with colour or revealed clean, large and striking shapes.

The Resene colour I had was Resene Buttercup, a rich and bright yellow – a feature I had to take advantage of. Using my inspiration of large-scale shapes I have decided to create a structured, minimal and oversized coat with a two-part sleeve to maximise the cylindrical shape.

Using the complementary saris I want to create an outfit underneath the coat that will provide a hint of colour blocking while enhancing the impact of Resene Buttercup. A longer sleeveless swing top and a cropped high-waisted flare make this outfit functional, but by playing with proportion and scale on all three garments it remains minimal, playful and a natural fit for Wellington – a city where layers are both a necessity and a style choice.

Something I always struggle with in fashion is the idea of having a 'girl' – your target demographic or 'type' of customer. My 'girl' is me, it's my fashion obsessed workmates, it's my mother and it's someone I've never met. I've called this look Tuesday in an attempt to no longer be bound by demographics or labels. Today is only Tuesday; who will we be tomorrow?"
