Colour: Resene Optimist
"Optimistic blues.
While researching for my design I thought about the kinds of plants and scenery Maya might have encountered. I looked for unusual shapes in nature, particularly the shapes and forms of tropical plants. The shapes that appealed to me were reminiscent of fractals going from smaller to larger iterations of the same shape.
I incorporated this into my neckline, which gives a plaiting effect. The shapes grow from the top of the neckline, all the way down to the hem, allowed the eye to travel organically down the full length of the body. I wanted the silhouette of my garment to represent a strong female form, something that I thought an empowered boundary breaking woman like Maya would wear. This effect is achieved through a strong shoulder, a proud feminine neckline area and a widely flared hip.
The structured areas at the top of the garment are to represent the world Maya has come from. The dress then makes a dramatic change to organic forms and movement in the skirt to represent the exciting new life Maya will have in the future."
