The owner of Sanctuari Thai Massage needed help in creating his Thai Massage Day Spa and approached Carmel from Touches Interior Design to help him select colours and finishes to make the space feel like a beautiful, serene, relaxing and tranquil environment.
The space that was to be transformed was an outdated office with a collection of interesting areas, attention-grabbing ceiling angles and heights. The space had loads of natural light pouring in from the windows and very poor artificial light, hence window treatments and mood lighting were required to create the ambience. Touches took all these structural elements into account when designing the space, using colours to help create zones and emphasise interesting aspects of the space.
Using the different colours and textures not only defined areas but allowed focal points to be created for accent items of décor, furniture placement and helped the lighting to set the tone of the space in being a serene, warm, inviting, calm and relaxing environment in which to experience an authentic Thai massage.
Textures of timber gave the space warmth and a Thai rustic feel, used in the window treatment of Old Teak finished shutters, in Thai inspired furniture, along with a vinyl timber floor from Karndean that not only resembled timber in colour and texture but provided acoustic value to the area and easy maintenance.
The colours were inspired by the Thai Lotus flower and the Thai Culture Astrological colours of the week. Using Resene paints the wall colours were selected then matched with a beautiful metallic wallpaper and textured fabrics as curtain room dividers in the foot massage areas. Warm lighting was placed strategically to create the mood and furnishing and décor to speak of Thailand. Through this combination, Touches was able to create the aspiring warm ambience for the day spa.
The colours were selected from the Resene BS5252 colour range as they were predominate/defined colours that worked with all the other elements of the design; they were bright but warm and they helped define spaces and highlight structural features as well as being allied colours from the Thailand culture. Bold choices of Resene Trendy Pink, Resene Hot Purple, metallic Resene Blast Yellow and Resene Husk were chosen alongside softer Resene Coconut Cream. To add interest the metallic paint was added to speak to the sheen wallpaper and to create significance for the artwork and contrast to the overall colour scheme.
The colour palette met the brief of being Thai inspired – the colours helped create a modern authentic Thai Day Spa with a warm, welcoming ambience and also formed an appealing and fragrant backdrop to showcase all the décor elements of the design, meeting the client brief.
