Remodelling projects present an ideal opportunity to reconsider the paint surfaces in your home. As well as choosing a paint finish that will meet your requirements in terms of durability and texture, you can enliven your home with a change of colour. Resene paints are a good starting point. The company manufactures paint types to suit all applications. In the Red Shed holiday home featured, the rustic beauty of the timber facade has been preserved with Resene Waterborne Woodsman. This is contrasted by the trim and joinery, which feature Resene Super Gloss enamel tinted to the complex beige Resene Tea.

Inside the house, vibrant interior colours provide a modern twist to the iconic barn. Two interior walls feature Resene Zest and a Resene colour-match to Melteca Snapdragon. These contrast the more neutral walls in Resene Tahuna Sand. The interior is finished with white Resene Super Gloss enamel on interior trim and Resene Waterborne Woodsman on exposed joists and trusses, giving them a protected, yet natural, timber finish.

The other home shown on these pages features James Hardie Linea weatherboards, a popular cladding choice for both existing and new homes. Known as The Boatshed, this Waiheke Island lodge features Resene paints on both the exterior and interior.

The Linea weatherboard substrate was coated with Resene Lumbersider satin acrylic, which is complemented by window trim and fascias in Resene Enamacryl gloss waterborne enamel and Resene Sonyx 101 semi-gloss acrylic. A palette of special Resene-designed colours, such as Resene Alabaster and beige, and varying gloss levels, enabled perceived age differences to be created between the boat shed, lighthouse suite and main building. Interior paperfaced plasterboard and James Hardie tongue-and-grove linings were painted in Resene Zylone Spacecote. Bathrooms were treated to a higher sheen in the form of Resene Lustacryl semi-gloss waterborne enamel. Natural timber flooring and stair treads were blonded using a Resene Enamel Undercoat wash, then top-coated in Resene Aquaclear for an environmentally friendly finish.

To help you find the colour combinations that will work best in your home, Resene has produced The Range. This fandeck narrows down the thousands of colour options to 150 key shades, which reflect old favourites as well as current international design trends, tailored to suit New Zealand lifestyles. The Range includes paint finishes from the Resene Metallics and Special Effects collection. These finishes can add an extra dimension to virtually any surface and are a growing trend, says Resene marketing manager Karen Warman.

"More subtle pearlescent finishes, Resene Pearl Shimmer and the new Resene Pixie Dust, achieve a softer, shimmering effect. This is more dynamic than a plain solid colour, but less dazzling than a full metallic finish," she says.

To simplify paint selection for your home, Resene has introduced a free tool on its website - Resene TechSpec. This programme makes it easy to select the paint system that best suits your needs. Colour selection is also simple. Resene EzyPaint virtual painting software lets you preview a colour scheme on your computer.
