Step 1 how to make a classic DIY gate

Step 1
Take two of the one metre lengths of timber and, using the 25mm flat wood bit, drill four holes approx 50mm from each end – this is to countersink the coach bolts, so only drill to about 10mm deep. Drill a hole through the centre of each of these using the 10mm drill bit.

Step 2 how to make a classic DIY gate

Step 2
Take one of the non-drilled lengths of timber and apply PVA to one end. Place this against one of the drilled lengths of timber and clamp together to form a right angle. Use the long 8mm drill bit to drill through the 10mm hole and into the second piece of timber. Use the ratchet to screw in the 150mm coach screw, as shown. Repeat with the other three corners to form the outer frame.

Step 3 how to make a classic DIY gate

Step 3
Place the frame on a flat surface and use the large set square to ensure the corners are at accurate right angles.

Step 4 how to make a classic DIY gate

Step 4
Measure and cut five lengths of 50mm x 50mm timber and evenly space them, as shown. Fix to the outer frame using PVA glue.

Step 5 how to make a classic DIY gate

Step 5
Using the long 5mm drill bit, drill a hole through the outer frame and into each of the 50mm x 50mm railings. Insert a 150mm galvanised nail into each of these holes and gently tap into position with a hammer.

Step 6 how to make a classic DIY gate

Step 6
Apply one coat of Resene Galvo One to the hinges. Once dry, fix the hinges to the gate with galvanised coach bolts and fix the hinge supports into the pillar using a 10mm masonry drill bit and strong exterior construction glue. Use a spirit level to check that they are perfectly aligned.

Step 7 how to make a classic DIY gate

Step 7
Hang the gate on the hinge supports and check that it is level, if not, adjust the hinge supports by lightly tapping one further into the pillar with a hammer. Apply one coat of Resene Quick Dry Acrylic Primer Undercoat to the gate, and allow to dry.

Step 8 how to make a classic DIY gate

Step 8
Apply two coats of Resene Alabaster to the gate, leaving two hours to dry between coats. Drill a 10mm hole in the other pillar and fix the galvanised latch to the gate, ensuring the latch is aligned with the hole in the pillar.
